The next line is "Down in the park with a friend called >five" - and we have already been made aware that friends are >manufactured (Are 'Friends' Electric? and from TA "Did you know that >Friends come in boxes" for example). Gary wrote in his book that the DITP concept was that when a 'machine' (a manufactured person) got out of line, they were taken to The Park (a sort of maniacal amusement park in the center of The City) where the machmen would spend the night playing evil games killing off the wayward 'machines'. People would gather nearby to eat (at Zom-Zom's) and watch the 'machines' run from the machmen until they were ultimately killed. By morning The Park would be empty, ready for more offending 'machines' to be delivered for the next night's madness. Also, if I'm not mistaken, 'My Love is a Liquid' is about a future concept for reproduction. Basically mail-order kits for custom-made children/clones or 'friends'. You would buy the kit - "Friends come in boxes", put your spoodge in it - "Let your body flow inside", and grow your little clone - "Watch it grow before your eyes". Who knows? Might actually happen some day. Funny story - when I first heard this song, (I was 16 years old after all) I was under the impression Numan was singing a kind of a crude and humorous song about birth control. "Can you see her little eyes/Can you see her little hands/Don't you think she looks just like me" - I thought was the birth of a child, perhaps a 'mistake'. "Save your money buy a tube/Let your body flow inside" - now I assumed he was referring to condoms, the "friends" that you would buy that "come in boxes" and prevent you from making any more 'mistakes'. I guess you can see where my mind was when I was 16. The club Zom Zoms, however, really caters to the few that are allowed out after curfew to socialize(I think they were administrators or something). I would very much appreciate it if anyone out there could either direct me to or send me ANY(!!!!) of Gary's bass tabs. I'm especially interested in anything off of Replica's, Tubeway Army and Beserker. Aside from "down in the park" tabs anything you guys can come up with would help me so much. As for the whole bashing of Rod R. at Cleo, I say, piss off. I would give almost anything to have a job at Cleo(I'm 16 but I love sooo many of their artists). Since it seems apparent that his job is to create covers, I'd like to give him a big thumbs up, I like the new covers (especially white noise, but that's just the EP cover redone) and I think he's doing a great job. And finally, I am also interested in T-shirts, what's this about a Russian GN shirt? I would love a Tubeway army shirt or a shirt with art from The Plan, Tubeway Army and Beserker. If anyone knows where I can get any of this stuff it'd be a big help, thanks for everything in this big huge post, -Erich the lone Numan fan in Rochester NY Ps. the cover font for Exile and the Numa Years is called "Terminator Two", you can get it at www.coolarchive.com(yes it really IS shareware) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Jun 1999 13:02:51 -0500 From: Robert Smith Subject: Gary Lyrics To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Now I know y'all prolly field this one more than you like, BUT can anyone tell me of a good lyrics page? Of course, I won't do a thing until Gary says it's o.k. and he gets his cut. Anyone interested in a fan's interpretation of the Master's work? Just thought I'd mention that Gary's name appears in a couple of different flyers from the "shop at home" music club Columbia House: In the ALTERNATIVE 101 flyer, on page #6, Gary Numan is mentioned as an influence on The Fixx; and again (just below that) Gary Numan appears along with David Bowie and Roxy Music as influential on the work of Duran Duran. Now, you might say that's not too big of a deal -- but I don't believe it can hurt anything! Then: on page #10 of the Quick Hits flyer, for Fear Factory's Obsolete CD, Gary Numan appears in bold print. So, nothing major -- it's not like Gary's being peddled through the record clubs... yet. I joined the BMG music service when I heard that Gary signed with Eagle -- since Eagle is owned by BMG. I've contacted them and inquired about the availability of Numan material through there club, but never received a reply. Typical! Hope I didn't get any on anyone... -- Troy L. OK. But At the Wembley Arena, It's Mick Karn too !!!! The bass line (+ solo) is in playback !!! If you listen well to the song on Micromusic : 1- The bass line is EXACTLY the same on the studio album ! Even the harmonics !!! (I'm an awful bass player, but I know what I'm talkin' about ! it's a really difficult instrument) 2- Ced Sharpley is not well synchronised with the tape. He ended the song alone ! (because he started a bit late on the solo) 3- Of course, you see Paul play on the screen but I don't want you to think that he played on the studio session of "SGC", it's not true ! However due to the artwork time and materials its only really economic... (to keep the cost of a shirt at around 15 pounds), if I have atleast 20 people who want one..otherwise it'll be silly money for just one or two!! So if you fancy a unique shirt then please respond as soon as possible, if I have enough people I may even be able to give them out at the gig to save on P&P... There's some people in San Diego (Calif.) that have them, but, um, I'm not sure that they're selling them, nor that they're people with whom you'd want to be doing business. Your best bet is to do what they did - DIY. You should be able to find a custom t-shirt shop that will happily make the shirt for you. Good luck! Hope to see some old faces too. I did hear once that Paul Gardiner started off with a Shergold bass. I hope that piece of info is true as it's about the only reason I have held onto mine all these years. It's not a patch on a precision, obviously. R/e the Tubeway face on a T-Shirt, just scan the album cover, doctor out the lettering and get one of those T-Shirt printing kits for your printer. They allow you to print onto paper that can then be ironed on to a T-Shirt. They're only a few pounds and is probably the cheapest way out of it. See Y'all next week. Luv on ya!!!!! There are also "service machines" that Gary created in his short stories during this period, hence the song "Are 'Friends' Electric". These machines provided "services" for the humans(games, sex, whatever). So, in answer to your question, both the Machmen and the machines(depending on the type as there is "the machine" that the city gave control to and there are killing machines in the park created by "the machine" and also "friends" to provide services ).
