Strange Charm and Sacrifice the best insult ever! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 15:50:48 -0400 From: Matthew Roberts Subject: Beef & Mustard Style To: Gary Numan Has anyone tried those Linda McCartney "Beef & Mustard Style Steaks"? They're gorgeous. They don't exactly taste like beef, but they're delicio= us just the way they are. I've had my doubts about Gary over the years. You know how it is... you g= et into different sorts of music, and think "Why isn't Gary this good?" For me, it's been David Byrne, Prince, Spear of Destiny, J.S.Bach, Smashi= ng Pumpkins, Deus. "Why isn't Gary this cerebral/funky/angry/intricate/eclectic/weird?" But I still miss him. And then after a couple of weeks I'll play The Fury= or Machine & Soul and I fall in love all over again. Occasionally an ignorant person will slag Gary off and it only serves to remind me how much pride I get from being a fan. Not in an "I like quirky= " Iain Banks kind of way, but in an "I like intelligent" Marcel Proust kind= of way. Of course it would be nice if Gary always put artistic considerations first. It would be nice if he never, ever played anything from the 70's again. It would be nice if he hadn't released Miracles on 3 different coloured vinyls. It would be nice if he hadn't recorded 1999. But then he's given the world I, Assassin, Berserker and Outland so you have to forgive him. Matthew Roberts ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 04:19:57 -0800 From: ALEC WAY Subject: Deniable Truth Number 1 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Joey, I enjoyed reading your last post. It cleared up for me an issue I'd forgotten about: the fact that Numan himself could get into trouble if he links to websites that contain downloadable CD-quality, full-length tracks. I'd forgotten about that issue. And if that's the case, he should "disown" some people from his site. Yup. But about your letter: I'd prefer if Limbaugh had called the truth that you added to end of your post something other than "undeniable." The way I read it, it looks pretty deniable. It looks to me like you and that rather portly, high-pitched-voice man are advocating CUTTIN' down some MORE dang TREES. Maybe Canada's got trees to spare, but the San Francisco Bay Area doesn't. God save the tree, she ain't no human being. I'd like to see the word "The," which begins the sentence, changed to an "A." To keep this post Gary-related, I'll mention that I have an interview somewhere where Gary mentions, in a favorable way, the so-called "Green Belt" outside of London because, well, there are some TREES there. That's why it's green and that's why he likes it I would suspect. And I agree with him. I like trees too. In fact, is it or is it not this very Green Belt seen in the "Warriors" video? That's one of my favorite Numan videos for some reason. Anyway, this was the quote I was referring to: / Rush Limbaugh's Updated 35 UNDENIABLE TRUTHS / / NUMBER 8 / / The most beautiful thing about a tree is what you do with it after you / cut it down. I don't expect to get an attachment to the digest, but after that Happy99 thing, I look for them anyway. But when I opened the message there was no attachment?! I'm scared! Is there some way to strip any attachments that get posted to the digest? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jun 1999 23:43:56 -0700 From: Gregor Torrence Subject: Fear Factory - serious air time To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Gary Numan) I've been hearing Fear Factory's Cars remake on the radio a lot here in Portland "Let's rock this restaurant" Oregon. But here's the interesting part. Not only do I hear it on the so-called alternative station, but they play it on the full-on rock station too. And I mean rock station. The same station that has "mandatory Metallica" for half an hour every night at 10PM. I'd also have to add that I give the remake a thumbs up. It's does not deviate from the original except for the addition of some muscular guitar that plays some of the parts that were synths on the original. Plus it's always a treat to hear Gary's voice on the radio, even if he only alternates lines with Fear Factory's singer. But I did a little Fear Factory listening, and unless terms like Speed Metal, Death Metal, and Grindcore make you reach for your wallet, I'd recommend just looking for a Cars single and skip the rest of the Fear Factory catalog. But, hey. I think it's fantastic that people as diverse as rap acts, techno artist, and metal bands are giving Gary his props. I've only been a subscriber for a few weeks, but even in that short time you have sent some of the digests as regular e-mail. Is there some reason why all digests can't be sent this way? I don't know how to open these files, and in any event, I am reluctant to open files attatched to e-mail. However, I do want to get the latest news about Gary. Thanks, Michael Wilson ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 23:47:55 -0400 From: Glen Sutton Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #548 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Gary Numan) Hmmmm.... An artist is in himself a work of art, slowly yet surely creating and re-creating himself. Sometimes the colors look right, sometimes they don't. Sometimes its the shapes that just don't seem to speak the way they should. But art, as in any created thing (including us), are in progress, and are at times snapshots of a moment in our time line, that may or may not truly represent the sum total of the creation/creator. Gary Numan is an artist. He discovers and re-discovers himself all the time. As does David Sylvian, Eno, et al. Understand that not everyone will appreciate the "art" all the time, nor in the same ways as others. Including the artist himself. If you have never understood this, you will always continue to critique and complain about the aspects you do not seem to like at this point in the time line. But perhaps, somewhere, along that line, your mind will open and blossom with comprehension and understanding...and perhaps still not like it. That is cool. That is what it is all about. I choose to appreciate it or not as I do, and let you appreciate it or not as you do. So, how about letting it stand at that. Question as you must, but unless you are the creator, do not tear it down. That is not your right. Have an opinion as you might. But opinions change. And everyone has one. Be well and listen well. There is music out there. And they did indeed provide prompt delivery. Last year. However. This year they've joined some company called Bargain America, and their business is a sham. I tried ordering 'Living Ornaments 79' & '81' through them-- yes, at much cheaper prices than CDnow listed-- and eagerly waited for them to arrive. And waited. And waited. Finally, after some months, I e-mailed them to ask what was the hold-up. They had cancelled my order. Just cancelled it, no notification, no apology, nothing. Oh well, I really wanted those albums, so I ordered again. And again waited. I e-mailed them again after waiting. They claimed they had sent them, and that they must have gotten lost. No offer to replace them, no apology. I had to write to request a refund. And write, and write, and write. It's been most of a year, now, and they still have not refunded my money, even though I've gotten several promises. The upshot of this story is: stay well clear of Mass Music. In contrast, I ordered '79' & '81' through CDnow-- true, at a higher price, but they had them turned around and delivered to me within one week. So... http://www.cdnow.com lots of love to all, Benjamin Iglar-Mobley P.S. Yeah, I ordered PTTA through them, as well. Last year. LAST year they were a good source for music. I would never order anything from them again. * * * "On those occasions, when everything-- broke-- down, including you and me." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 20:57:21 +0100 From: "David Ellison" Subject: Of course, that was ME! I mean a whole digest was replying to his comment. While he thought what he said wasa complete pile of shite, I just thought he was someone trying to stir things up. Basically I like Gary Numan because listening to his music (well the vast majority of it) does positive things for me. I get similar comments from my so called friends all the time. I say similar stuff back about the indie or dance crap they like. But I always think they are the ones who are braindead :-) I'd like to ask Danny T how Sacrifice could possibly be a demo tape. Even a demo of the "demo", Metal Beat gives me the shivers. Even it is a demo it's better than anything any top 40 band could put out, and that's why I'm a fan. I also want to comment on my latest Numan pick-up, Cleopatra's Strange Charm. I think that having artwork only slightly different to the original is the best way to go, it has some very nice touches on it. And the disc itself looks very cool indeed! I got it for the one track I was missing, the 10" version of I Can't Stop which I really like, much beter than the album version which I liked anyway. I think I'll programme the disc to play this track and the 12" of New Thing as tracks 4 and 5 as I'm genearlly a fan of these 12"/extended versions. Again, an excellent job by Reynolds and co. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Thank you, aaron, for this zinger: > i'll bet you didn't even like Star Wars Episode 1! I will never forget it as long as I live. Why is everyone fussing about who will produce Gary's music? If anything, someone needs to take away all his audio toys, samplers, loops, drum machines and hand him just a few basic instruments. Think of the Gooseberry studio synthesizer, attached to a chain so no one would steal it. Basic, basic, basic.
