My name is Jessica Bastion. I am a 23yrs old female student at Michigan Technological University, in Houghton Michigan, U.S.A. I am also a 4th term dj at the university radio station, WMTU. Since I am a communications and graphic design student, I am naturally interested in this media of communication. I am considering a career in broadcast communication along with other options open to me. I heard about this list after researching Gary Numan's career. I am an 80's music fan, so of course I heard (and loved) his big hit "Cars". (I own the remake single of that song by Fear Factory, and I've heard other remixes of it as well, which I am also interested in finding and owning.) I recently started playing an industrial format for my show, switching from pop/dance music, and I discovered WMTU's copy of "Exile". This disc is what sparked my interest, and made me want to research Gary's career a little deeper. I realized this man had a lot more to him than "Cars". So far, "Absolution" is my favorite track to play, "Down in the Park" live is quickly become another favorite. I play at least one track once a week, every time I'm on the air, and I've gotten other dj's interested in the cd as well. I think I will make an effort to get more Gary Numan material for our station, as well as for myself. If anyone would like to listen to WMTU, you can download real audio and listen. Our Website is www.wmtu.mtu.edu. I will be on the air again this friday, and next week my show will be changing to a covers-only show. (My first song I plan to play is Foo Fighter's version of Down in the Park on the X-files CD.) I have signed up onto this list to learn more about Gary Numan, his past career, his future career moves, and info on how to get more material of his. I don't know how much I will be able to contribute to this list. I feel that my contribution is giving him as much airplay as I can, and spreading the word about him! thanks, jessB ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Jul 1999 13:02:42 PDT From: James Dawson Subject: Dominion Day=Cities in Dust To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I probably am not the first person to point this out, but has anyone else noticed the rather...startling...resemblance between "Dominion Day" and the old Siouxsie and the Banshees song "Cities in Dust?" The choruses are almost note-for-note. (I was reminded of this as I walked through a store yesterday and the Siouxsie video came on.) At least Gary has good taste in the groups he borrows from... _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. I don't go through listening cycles as far as other music is concerned. I go through listening cycles with Numan within his music i.e. I may play one album over and over then not play it again for years but start playing something else. I often really enjoy his latest stuff as much as I enjoyed Replicas and The Pleasure Principle, and so it goes on. Then I may go years without listening to any Numan, my last boyfriend in the UK did this to me, his favourites were not mine and he would play them over and over 'til I couldn't take it any more. I had gone through a non Numan listening phase before I started reading the digest. Now I've started to listen to my Numan collection again, mostly to see what all the fuss is about on certain ones and a futile attempt to go through and decide which were my favourites. As for other artists, once I like a particular artist I continue to like their tracks and albums as long as they don't stray into a style of music that I don't like or I think they don't do that style very well. Actually I have mix tapes of all my favourite artists and individual tracks. There was a very baron moment in time pre NIN where I'd all but given up on there ever being any decent new music. Now there's all this Industrial stuff and Dark Wave, Portishead, Death Metal, D-Ream, Manson, Tori Amos, PWEI etc etc. I will make more mix tapes and continue to listen to them all. Numan had a very different effect on me, I was able to pick up single tracks from my least favourite albums and with time be able to hear an underlying quality that wasn't there at first. I've found the same thing is happening with Manson, I just didn't get his stuff at all at first, then I heard 'the beautiful people' and that pricked up my ears. I don't think I would have had the opportunity to get into his stuff properly if I hadn't had access to my boyfriends Manson collection. He's also been buying Numan, since I introduced him to his music. I think he got frustrated that my collection was incomplete. New fans get really hungry for more Numan don't they? I enjoy listening to the fans that have just discovered his music, it reminds me of how I used to be, I've really calmed down lately (shame I know, I miss the passion). To: Hey everyone! I was in the music store today to see if my copy of Project Pitchfork's "I Live Your Dream" single was in (the Numan remix, for those of you that aren't in the know), and happened upon a brand new Heavy Metal compilation called simply "Hard." I was surprised to see "Featuring Fear Factory and Gary Numan - Cars" as top billing on the little sticker they put on the cover. How's that for publicity? The album features artists like: Rammstein, Marylin Manson, Rob Zombie, Skunk Anansie, Echo And The Bunnymen, etc... Many of the songs on it are first-time compilation songs, Cars included, and it's on Attic Records if you are interested in tracking it down. Let's hope it's a big seller! -BasicJ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Jul 1999 11:56:59 +0100 From: "ade.pitkin" Subject: Tubeway T-shirts and more. Sorry this a long one, but, I tried to keep away while the Danny T responses were doing the rounds. Lots of good points have been shared recently, partly cos of DT, but, not always. The penny for my thoughts gets you this...try and stay with it if you can... IMO, Gary should use a producer or some other positive input.......he could do worse than get a bunch of friends/fans (sorry DT, that doesn't include you even if the result would be his best ever since '81) over for a burger and coke on weekend to chat about what's going on. I don't think that is as stupid as it may sound. The reasoning: I think that because as Gary is doing nearly 100% of everything involved in getting the last two records out, we are hearing the result. Sacrifice brilliant, Exile great potential but a bit samey with the sound and mix. No-one can challenge Gary's creative skills, both musically and lyrically. He has proven the point over and over, especially recently. I use an analogy to make the point....I work in a very large company. I am pretty good in the area that I cover but I couldn't possibly claim to be good in all areas, even if I could just about manage. If someone told me to do the whole lot, perhaps I'd get by but the result would not be as good as when the best people in each corner did their stuff. Think back to the era that even DT liked. I can't imagine Gary was telling Uncle Jess how to play the drums, or Paul how to play bass; he wouldn't dream of telling Chris or Billy how to play the violin or keyboard etc etc. I don't believe that he actually tried. Despite the clash with Mr Nelson on Warriors, Gary has shown that he can let an expert do their stuff and we all reap the benefit. A good example here would be Dick Morrisey. I recall in Alien, that Gary just asked Dick to 'do his thing'. Whether, you like sax or not, the result was technically and musically very good. Now Gary's got a lot of toys in the studio that can make lots of different noises. And after the dark early 90's, it seems that the best thing to do was lock himself away at the bottom of the garden and rediscover himself. I love the result, and like someone said in a recent digest, when Sacrifice came out I also jumped with joy cos Gary was back!! The analysis of LP's coming in 3's is interesting and worth a thought. I think that now is a good time for Gary to come out of the garden shed having confirmed his credentials, and start getting the best out of other people again. This is perhaps why he's struggling to be happy with the next album. He's not in the doldrums any more and doesn't need to lock himself away to hide from the nasty people out there. If someone showed him a better sound, or better mix whereby some of the issues e.g. 'muddy sound'/'difficult to catch the lyric' etc that have been voiced on the digest could be fixed/improved, then I'm sure that the result would be very significant. In no way does it mean that Gary is less good at what he does best (lyrics and melodies IMO). It shows maturity and courage to allow people in to bring the product upto even higher levels. The Forum IMO was better that Rock City...great atmosphere, Gary having fun, great songs etc but some of the same problems remained....too loud, crap mixing and boring, repetitive drum loops. Switch the damn tape off and turn the drum kit up and use bigger sticks if you want POWER. Beryl was stage right (as you looked at stage) and I suspect was seeing if she could help in the sound department. Gary was also making efforts to get things right on the night with several corrections to the setup. I suspect that Gary and Beryl probably follow this digest from time to time and maybe are trying to sort things out. Most encouraging. I'm sure that Gary knows by now that we are on the same side (well most of us!) and with the positive use of the feedback he gets on such matters, the result bodes very well. Now is definitely the time for him to capitalise on his position within the industry/media and have some more glory.....not from another release of Cars though. I agree that if he fucks this next one up, then it's probably about time to fold the tent and go home. But, it can be done and success is begging to be had again. If it's drum loop LP number 3 then I'll still buy it but we'll be back to square one. If Gary, Tony, Beryl et al think my comments are valid ..great. It's worth remembering that a lot of us are grown up people now with responsible jobs, families etc and can probably give Gary some advice(from outside the music business which could help), share some thoughts etc without getting all gooey and fan-like trying to kiss his ass! As a famous rabbit once said..That's all folks Keep Optimistic Keep Strong Keep High.....
