Why doesn't he just buy the CD? Sorry to sound a bore, but I bet you I'm not as pissed as Gary would be reading your 'plea for help'. If you read the biography, you'll see that Gary hasn't always been 'flush' with success (despite the new TVR), so don't you think it might help not to rob him of the wage for his great work? your call..flame away ciao nickiNu Ps so there is at least one fan in Italy....welcome Lara! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 08 Jul 1999 08:53:23 +0000 From: "Michael J. Damrath" Subject: Conspiracy to an act of Piracy To: Gary Numan I just have a quick note for Jenny Beck (kraftwerk@access1.net): You do realize, of course that you are committing an act of piracy by burning and shipping copies of Exile and Sacrifice! I wouldn't help you do it, even if it might mean turning someone on to the new Gary Numan sound. Tell your friend to go BUY the CDs for themselves. That's the way this deal is supposed to work. If you wanted to turn someone on to Gary's new sound, then I would copy a couple of Exile and Sacrifice songs to a cassette tape and let your new friend hear that. That way, if they like it, they can BUY the CDs and put the money into Gary Numan's pockets where it belongs. Certainly you should not duplicate the CDs right down to the cover art! The very idea makes me nauseous. Sorry for the rant.... now back to your regularly scheduled programming... Michael J. Here's a little favor to ask you all, I need to you pull together your resources of Gary information. I am starting my new radio show "Under the Covers" Wednesday evenings from 5-7pm. Our format is cover songs and the originals. I want to find information about the songs that we are playing, how many covers, who did the covers, etc. If you know of obscure covers, (not like the most famous ones, the recent "Cars" remake, and the "Down in the Park" remakes as well) let me know. I'd just like info on what song is covered, which album that song originally was on, and who did the cover and where that can be found. I would appreciate any info you can give. you can e-mail the info to me personally, jlbastio@mtu.edu, or during the show Wednesday 5-7 at request@mtu.edu. As I mentioned before, you can listen in to us on RealAudio (www.wmtu.mtu.edu). I think if you are Gary Numan fans, you will generally enjoy the music Barry and I will be playing. Thanks so much for your help. In the short time I've been on this list I've gotten plenty of responses already, all of them polite and very helpful. I am really liking being on this list! Happy listening! jessB ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Jul 1999 13:56:02 +0100 From: Tom Gorham Subject: Dominion Day=Cities in Dust To: "Gary Numan" James Dawson wrote: >I probably am not the first person to point this out, but has anyone else >noticed the rather...startling...resemblance between "Dominion Day" and the >old Siouxsie and the Banshees song "Cities in Dust?" I knew when I was listening to that song that I'd heard it somewhere before, and it was itching at me for ages. You're right, it's eerily similar. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Jul 1999 01:12:35 +0000 From: Dryad Subject: Fear Factory Video To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Greetings all- Caught the latter half of Fear Factory's video for Cars, quite well done. The song isn't a fabulous rendition, but hey, the video was cool. Gary actually appears in it, which was quite nice, and he looks suitably scary. Witnessed on VH1's (UK only?) Friday Rock Show. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu RE Numan on a heavy metal compilation. I got the latest Isolation Tank catalog a few days ago - they're a music store, or rather warehouse, selling gothic, ambient, experimental, industrial, etc. Anyway, I was randomly flipping through it and found the Gary Numan section. Quite a large section - everything from Exile to Outland to those two-album CDs that got put out ages ago (like Telekon/I, Assassin). www.isotank.com if you're interested. But the pertinent question is - what category did IsoTank put Numan in? Industrial! Go figure. So next time somebody who just touched down from Mars says to you, "Gary Numan? What kind of music does he play?", you know what to answer... As to "Dominion Day" sounding like "Cities in Dust": New one on me... but I agree, if Numan's going to use other bands' influences in his music, Siouxsie's one of the better possible choices. And could you explain to me the point of bringing back an 'old fan' when he's too greedy to put his hands in his pockets and shell out for anything? How is that going to get a Numan record up the charts? And don't give me the bullshit that he might pay for his own CDs later. It doesn't work that way in a pirate's world. I'm glad you've managed to increase your own collection 'for free', though. I'm sure hard-grafting musicians around the world will raise a glass in a toast to your crazy disregard for old-fashioned notions such as copyright. The year 2000 being the new millennium is only a bogus fantasy, wake up people! It's simple addition & logic, but I guess that's what the world lacks today, it's sad, but i guess it's expected. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Jul 1999 16:40:59 +0100 From: "Simon Joseph" Subject: Numusic To: "The Digest" The music on the numusic line sounds very interesting. Still very basic but promising. Very much in the exile vein but courser. This particular piece which is unnamed is almost a cross between random and an alien cure. One thing I find very difficult to believe is that numan has managed to write 15 or 16 songs! And he has not yet finished. I hope they all see the light of day and don't end up as projects. Wow numan has been involved in a video that is not SAD. The new fear factory video is great, I never got close to cringing once. On the strength of the video I bought the CD. Hmmmmmm unless you like very very very heavy stuff and I mean very heavy stuff, wait for the single. I went to play Love like a ghost to day but couldn't find it on CD. I thought it had been released on one of those compilations? All my LPs are in the loft. Nothing to do with numan but try this site, I read it all and I'm sure its legit. I bookmarked it. http://www.thehungersite.com/ Cheers Simon A proud member of 'nearly forgot about missing the forum gig as I am now looking forward to Manchester' ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Jul 1999 21:47:14 -0800 From: ALEC WAY Subject: Ricky Martin To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I saw the big Ricky Martin video the other day while channel surfing. But, don't you LIKE "The Sleeproom". It was a highlight. It is one of the outstanding tracks (in my opinion, -- none of this has anything objective about it!!!!!).. It is one of the outstanding tracks on the Strange Charm collection. Maybe Gary heard about your plight, and sang about the Sleeproom because he knew you hated being in one!!!!
