I played the premier mix of Cars & AFE. The response was great, even having someone yell out "It's Gary Numan!". FYI: If you live in the Toronto area, The Mix radio station is playing the original version of Cars on a semi-regular basis. Streuth, I saw a picture of it being done just the other day in the newspaper. Really cool picture for that matter. Kev of Kevworks (and everybody else): I don't know if you've ever been by the Numan Ultimate Bulletin Board, but we have a saying on there... The only line of that I can make out is 'she cries like I do'...I don't understand any of the rest! Oh yeah, this Spin Doctor thing sounds rather good, I have some old vinyl and tapes that are in less than great condition, but the only Numan item is Living Ornaments '80 on vinyl, which has eluded me on CD (only avaliable as Asylum 3). How many times have I heard "If only Gary would write a song like XXXX/ I= f only Gary had released YYY as a single."? Don't you get it? Gary could release Wannabee or Wild Wild West or Let Me= Entertain You... it wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference since t= he radio wouldn't play anything with "Gary Numan" on it. Radio playlisting has always been 1 part music, 7 parts fashion and 2 par= ts bribery. = Since Robbie Williams (or at least his management team) gets 7 out of 7 f= or fashion, probably 1 out of 2 for bribery (just the odd party invite here,= the odd free flight there) and obviously 0 for music. That makes 8 out of= 10. Now take A Question Of Faith for example. Let's see... 1 out of 1 for music, maybe 2 out of 7 for fashion and certainly 0 for bribery. That mak= es 3 out of 10. Now, what are Radio One going to play? Get with the programme - there is no Santa Claus, acupuncture is as usefu= l as any placebo, and to be a top DJ you need to be a complete tosser. >True Numanoidz will know this: Strange Charm is fucking great! Cynical Matthew ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 07 Aug 1999 13:06:59 -0500 From: Valerie Iglar-Mobley Subject: raving over Radio One Recordings To: The Gary Digest Dear numanoids, I just got my copy of "The Radio One Recordings." Let me just bend your eyes a bit about how fantastic it is. I adore this disc. Hearing these demo recordings, from when Gary was still developing his sound, of songs that have become so familiar to us is like discovering early sketch drawings of paintings by a master. The 'Replicas' songs have a sound like they were taken from the 'Tubeway Army' sessions. The keyboards are so heavy on "I Nearly Married a Human" they almost sound like a church organ. And would it be profane to say I actually prefer this version of "Conversation"? I think it's stronger for the lack of polish, since it's such an epic song-- partilucarly with that decaying-vocals ending. The album version loses me after a while, but the rawness here sustains it, much the way "We Have A Technical" does. While I'm gushing about re-dos, can I mention also that I lucked into a copy of the "My World Storm" ep remixed by Rockers Uptown. I didn't expect much from it, since Gary dissed it so badly in his biog, but I think it's fantastic. True, it's a departure from his sound, but no more so than anything on 'The Mix.' I would even argue this is more faithful than any of those. The Renegade Soundwave versions of "Are 'Friends' Electric?" are definitely more faithful, using the original synth lines, though they're layered over a hip-hop beat. The "Storm" ep is a treasure in another way, as well. It contains new lyrics. So let me finish off my lyrcis contributions with the couplet here that isn't in the album version: "A used sound A used feel I change everything that I can't steal I like comics I love trash I like pages when the markets crash" Not his most dramatic, obviously, but still it does add another entry to the Nu-speak dictionary. lots of love, Benjamin Iglar-Mobley * * * "I can listen to you I can only recieve It keeps me stable for days." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Aug 1999 00:57:52 +0200 From: "joeri peeters (home)" Subject: Review Euro Rock To: "Gary Numan" Hi, For the first time we didn't had to take a long trip to London to see Numan. (except Brussels) A half hour drive and we were there. Didnt' know what to expect. People walking around in gothic clothes, some of them dressed in a strange way. Made us laugh sometimes. People wearing T-shirts with Marilyn manson, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Sisters Of Mercy and Numan. Mainly people from Belgium, Holland, Germany, and some from England. Can't tell you how many people showed up but it looked 5000 or maybe 10000, hard to tell. Front 242 ( As I'm from belgium never seen them live) were good, nothing more. At 9 p.m. Gary and the band showed up. He started with 'Films'. When he played 'Cars' people were moving closer to the stage. Everyone was having a good time. It seemed that new songs from the exile album were liked by everyone. This were the tracks Gary Numan played. (not in exact order) Intro Films Friends Dominion Day Cars Metal Voix Absolution Down in the park Innocense Bleeding The Angel Wars Dark A question of faith Noise Noise ( I hope I've got them all ) The concert did only last for 1 hour, toooooo short for me. But Gary made one BIG mistake, not playing 'are friends electric'. If you ask to someone in Belgium who Gary Numan is, they would all say: Isn't that the guy with the electric thing? Not cars is Numan's biggest succes. Here it is AFE (which reached the second place in the charts in 1984) and Change Your Mind sold well too. My conclusion: Everybody, and I mean everybody was suprised how Gary and the band performed. They rocked and it was a pleasure to see him not in a venue like the forum, Gary is absolutely brilliant in open air as it became dark after 9.30 p.m. When Echo and the bunnyman showed up a lot of people left, it looked like Gary Numan was top of the bill. Then something happened I didn't expect. Someone from the Euro-rock crew gave my wife and a friend 2 backstage passes: ' meet and greet Gary Numan '. Obviously she gave it to her lovely husband(me), so me and Els could meet the man ( or should I say GOD after the concert ). Backstage Gary arrived to see us, in SHORT TROUSERS and a white shirt. Funny to see his white legs. I told him his legs hadn't seen that much sun. He replied that he's probably going to Nice (France) next week on holiday ( someone he knows is a very good friend with someone from shakespear sister ) and he's invited there. He told me he wrote a lot of songs (about 25) in the last six months but isn't satisfied with the style so he's starting all over again. He hadn't eaten all day because he was so nervous. He also told us he was very pleased with this concert and it fitted with the rest of the program. After all a great evening and probably one of the best Numan concerts I've ever gone to. (still Paris is my favourite, don't know why) A picture taken backstage and the meet and greet pass can be seen on next adress: http://home.planetinternet.be/ ~joeri/eurorock.html (prophecy site is under construction) That's all, I'm going to bed now.
