Seems I've brought a fair amount of debate and criticism upon myself, which is fair, being that I know I touched (very lightly) upon some volatile subjects on this digest. I promise not to ever do it again (do I hear clapping?) provided you all let me clear this up and make a few suggestions. All I did was make some short replies to a digest posting from a few weeks ago. A liberal made a couple of unkind and untrue statements, so naturally a conservative needed to respond. Nobody seems upset that a liberal made an off-topic post, yet several people are mad about my responses. Suggestion #1: Don't make blatantly liberal or blatantly conservative statements in the digest and not expect the opposite side to reply (in the digest). Suggestion #2: Don't make ANY political, theological, or sexually-oriented statements on the digest (unless they happen to relate directly to Gary Numan). Suggestion #3: If you must make any of these kinds of statements, keep them in your signature line (ala Joey Lindstrom, or the Boys Like Us club), where most of us will ignore them anyway. Suggestion #4: If you cannot tolerate an occasional quote from Rush Limbaugh in one man's signature tag, I suggest you unsubscribe to the digest. Suggestion #5: If you cannot refrain from making political, theological, or sexually-oriented statements in the body of your postings (myself included), then please unsubscribe to the digest. I guess it needs to be stated again, we're here to discuss Numan related topics, not our political affiliations, sexual orientations or views on major issues. I am a huge DM fan and when someone made a big deal one day about GN being a big DM fan I wondered exactly who this person was to ellicit such respect from a DM newsgroup fan so I checked him out. But didn't find anything until I stumbled across his excellent homepage. So now here I am. I only own two albums and the Random tribute so far but I'm getting there. other bands I like (in no particular order): Depeche Mode Curve The Cure Recoil Red Flag Paradise Lost Stuff about me: 20 year old female History major of UNLV in Las Vegas. Maybe Gary's a bit scared of getting popular again. Remember his statistics about being Number1? 1 million people like you and 59 million don't (in the UK that is) and some want to tell you about it. Whilst you're underground, the largest proportion of people down there will like you. The people on the surface don't know you're still there and leave you alone. Perhaps that's how Gary's survived. I agree with pretty much all of Ben's last digest. My view from a few weeks back offered that Gary should get some help on the things that he is not best at. That might be for the production, recording, players, definitely marketing strategy, choice of singles etc (......boy have we seen some bad choices in the past !)....or whatever. No-one can do all things to the highest standard. And in complex or fickle industries like making and selling records some things need to be spot on. Bloody hell, if Geri Halliwell can be reinvented, I'm damn sure it wasn't all her own doing. There will be people making the right moves, decisions etc behind the scenes. If Gary can't afford to buy the right team, then OK. There are plenty of us around that have grown up and out of the "Oh my God it's Gary" behaviour, who can just chat about this for free. Maybe if he reads the digest, he may well pick things up from time to time. I'm sure it wasn't Gary who thought of releasing AFE? on pic disc. We all know what effect that had at the time. In some ways I'm mixed about whether I want Gary to be Number1 again. Part of me does want to see him 'up there' again to prove all the bastards wrong that we have had to put with for the last 20 years slagging him off. On the other hand, it was probably the fact that he was ours, just for us, not for them etc that has kept us going all this time. And, generally enjoying every damn minute of it...even when the sounds goes crap at the gigs ! The bottom line is that it would help me (anyone else?) to know if Gary does actually want to be popular and successful again. If he just needs to make a living, like I do, then fair enough, I'll manage my expectations. I won't get upset when things don't go right (lots of examples in Ben's note). If he does want it, then something's got to change! "you won't like it you won't like it we get impatient as the time runs out!!!" NickiNu PS why did awa send a message in with unsubscribe backwards ?? some kind of subliminal message ? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Aug 1999 16:56:23 +0000 From: "Michael J. Damrath" Subject: Berserker Reissue :-( To: Gary Numan Let me make it clear from the beginning that this is definately not intended to be a stab at our good friend Rod Reynolds. But... I was in my local Borders Books and Music (strangely the best place around here to find a hell of alot of Numan CD's). Lo and behold, what did I see before me? The Berserker reissue! It is the only major Numan release that I do not have on CD! I snatched it up to look at the price (shit, $16.99, a little out of my budget at the moment) but was struck by the cover art. I am sorry to say it, but I was greatly dissapointed by the lack of quality. I am pretty sure that this particular subject was batted around in this digest, but I was just not prepared for it. This is one reissue that I was eagerly awaiting. Not only is Berserker one of my favorite Numan disks (and, IMHO, a pivotal one in Gary's career) but it is also one that I desperately needed to complete my CD collection. What happened? The photos are without a doubt scans directly from final printed product, but whoever did the scanning was obviously either lacking in the proper descreening software, or had no idea how to use it. I assume that the original photography was unavailable, because surely Gary Numan would not wish this clearly inferior image to be distributed commercially. At first glance, I thought that it was a bootleg, had it not been for the Cleopatra logo. Secondly, what happened to the type? It used to say "Gary Numan" on the left and "Berserker" on the right in vertical format, in a nice clean east-orient typeface. Now it's across the top in some kind of drippy, sloppy shareware headline font. My initial reaction was therefore; "ouch" to the price, "yuk" to the cover art and I dropped it back into the sales rack. I know I will have to go back at buy this disk. It has been killing me ever since I left the store that I didn't just go ahead and buy it. But it will be a tough purchase to make. Last Digest, Derek wrote: >Anyone have any thoughts on Eagle using the 20th Anniversary mixes of songs from the Dominion Day singles on the Premier HIts follow-up? .....why mess up a true singles collection by adding them but omitting some singles to make room for them..... I saw an Eagle CD of ELO and Friends and they put tracks from The Move, Wizzard and Violinski on a CD with live ELO tracks, the only ELO material to which they have rights. What a mish-mash. 'Tribal' is another curious inclusion. I'd have no objections to the new mixes being on the CD if the space was otherwise vacant, but if other singles are being 'sacrificed' it would be a shame. Are any of the omissions singles that have not previously been released on CD? 'This Is Love' has been suggested to me by Bart Tieman as one. The ELO CD reminds me of the Midge Ure 'If I Was' compilation which also featured other work with Ultravox, Visage, Thin Lizzy, Band Aid et al, an interesting concept I thought. Imagine how cool a 'Numan and Friends' CD would be with songs he has co-written or played on, e.g. Dramatis, Robert Palmer etc etc. As if... A while back there was some pretty funny media fuss in the States over a talking Austin Powers doll that angered some parents who realised that it said "Fancy a shag?" when their kids pulled the string. Ha! That slays me. But what about a talking Numan doll? Could be a big seller for next Xmas! But what would it say or sing when you pulled its string? Hmmm? How about "Radio One sucks!"? To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I'm afraid to admit it, but I'm forced to agree with everything Ben has said in the last digest. I can't understand why no live album has been released or is in the pipeline, all the UK and US fans would all buy it, and it would be easy money. Why can't we hear official live versions of Exile tracks? When was the last time Tracks/The Sleeproom/My Shadow In Vain was done live? It would also be nice to hear a 90s live recording without Kipper trying to turn Gary into a heavy metal band. 5 years is the biggest gap yet between live albums. Also with the Eagle/Cleo reissues. I got the box set in 1998 when I was still missing SC, M+S, and I had only herad the Sacrifice songs live on Dark Light, and was also missing all the B-sides. I was really disappointed Eagle just replicated the box set for the UK reissues. On the Cleo front, I bought White Noise because I only had it on an old casette that was knackered, and The Fury, Strange Charm, and Remodulate because I was missing 1 or 2 tracks from each. It was unfortunate I had to get a whole new reissue for this, but it's a good way of selling things, given that hardcore US fans would have already got the import Numa CDs. The only alternative was not to hear the tracks. The Cleo reissues f Berserker and M+S on the other hand, add nothing rare so I won't be buying them. But I'm sure a lot more copies would have been shifted if Gary had allowed permission for these rare tracks to have beeen included. Missed opportunities. I'm awaiting the reissues of the IRSalbums praying that extra material has been included.
