Wang Bros. Webb Interviews ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Aug 1999 05:02:53 -0400 From: dagonet@netwide.net (Don McCrum) Subject: A GN Related Mild Rant To: Gary Numan This isn't nice, so if you can't take criticism, don't read it. I don't mean to be critical (well, okay, I do), but when did (almost) everyone on this list become whiny and critical of everything Gary does...? When was something said that wasn't critical? If something like a re-issue of a CD/ album (I would guess a lot of us don't have or lost or whatever) or whether or not he does a live CD (this month) really bugs you that much, then I can't begin to guess why you're on this list in the first place (unless it is to inflate your own ego). Granted, I would love it if Gary was the most popular artist/ musician in the U.S. I'd hear his music more often. I think I'd die of laughter if I heard a Floridian-drawling DJ mis-pronounce "dominion".... But that wouldn't make the music itself any better, would it? Gary does excellent music, and I would like to thank him for that. When's the last time someone said something nice...? (No wonder he doesn't read this list too often -- it irks me, sometimes -- I wonder what it does to him.) I can't say I like everything he does, but I'm strange: I like to concentrate on the good and let the bad fade away all on its own. And, if it's so damn easy to be a successful/ popular rock star for (almost) everyone on this list and (almost) everyone knows how to re-mix every song Gary's ever done (or do the sound differently or promote themselves better or...et al), then why the hell don't they quit armchair quarterbacking and do it themselves...? If you wanted to yack on and on about bad stuff (and inflate your ego at the same time), join a Kid Rock email-list and talk about how horrid that "music" is.... ^_^ And if you're mildly irritated by me telling you how to write your emails, imagine how Gary feels when you tell him how to live his life.... Example finished. Gary has a wonderfully understated way of saying things. It's not what he says, but how he says it (and what he doesn't say). Examples: Jo the Waiter, are "friends" electric?, Is "Magic" an optimistic song or not? Granted, Gary's music demands a little more than most who are more popular, but isn't the effort of truly understanding one of his songs rewarded? D I'm done playing paternal image, now -- I'll let you go to the regular rants on "why didn't Gary do (insert complaint here)...." * * * amo ergo non-emailus listus http://www.netwide.net/users/dagonet/ AIM: MOAPOG ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Aug 1999 18:42:16 +0100 From: "NumanBoy" Subject: Dance & The Plan Available! To: "Gary Numan Digest" I visit the Beggars Banquet site today (Friday) and the Re-mastered "Dance" and "The Plan are now available for £8 (approx. $14US) ea.!! BUT and this is a BIG BUT (no pun intended)...... They wanted to charge me £11 ($18US) for SHIPPING !!! For just ONE CD!!!! The shipping chart says £2 but doesn't specify the service. When you order, you have a choice of UPS, Registered Mail or Regular Mail. No matter what I chose, it still came to £11! I don't really want to pay £19 for "Dance", even as much as I want it. I'll be trying again, as well as trying to contact them about, although I didn't see an e-mail addy for customer service. Cheers! David a.k.a. Beggars Banquet's re-issue program for the original eight classic Gary Numan albums continues with two further titles:- - Remastered from the original studio analog tapes for optimum sound quality - Original and expanded artwork in a 20 page book - Extensive sleeve notes, photos and lyrics DANCE Originally released in 1981, the album found Numan moving away from his 'machine music' into a new abstract, ambient and intimate style. While at the time the off-beat direction was deemed too weird for mainstream, international markets it is now recognised as one of his most adventurous albums. - 5 bonus tracks including the previously unreleased song, 'Dance' THE PLAN Built around Tubeway Army's original two singles and 15 demo recordings, which all pre-date Numan's official debut album, this is hard-riffing, guitar based punk with barely a synthesizer to be heard. However, lyrically and structurally, the songs are pure Numan and there's an unbridled energy in the performance that shines through. Try playing it blind to some of your punk fans! - 24 track collection including additional out-take and TV advert. - All tracks previously unissued in the USA ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Aug 1999 04:57:12 -0400 From: "Ken" Subject: Elderly Numan Fan To: "Numan Digest" Hi all! I was going through my mother-in-laws LP/CD collection which consist of things like Henry Mancini, Elvis, Neil Diamond, etc when I realized she owns her very own copy of Remodulate! I checked when I got home to see if I had left mine at her place, but no, mine was right where it was supposed to be. I made her a compilation tape of Numan songs some years back (please don't start that copyright crap again) and evidently she liked it. I was just surprised to find a Gary Numan CD in a 60 year-old lady's music collection. Imagine that. I'm Neil, Live in the U.k and have been a Numan fan since '81 (Just missed the farewell shows..damn !!) Does anyone know where I can get a copy of a recording of a 1983 Warriors tour gig that was played on Radio 1 (in the UK) in 1983 ? I used to own a copy on cassette, but it got lost some time ago. My main reason for looking for this is 'cos Gary did a superb 'funky' version of 'Love needs no disguise' and I want to own it again !!! Please feel free to advise of any 'avenues' that I could try in order to locate it ! Cheers ! The original version has been a top 20 hit 3 times in the UK and is Numan's second platinum (600.000 sales) single along with "Are 'Friends' Electric"…" Cheers - Ian ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Aug 1999 15:35:09 +0000 From: Dryad Subject: I agree with Benjamin To: numan@cs.uwp.edu 'lo all- I too do not understand the decision not to release a live cd after the US tours...I don't care *what* gig they would be taken from...just seems like Gery (or whomever) can't be bothered with giving us American fans a yummy dessert...now of course if the man's busy, he's busy, but it still bums me out. As for all the recent re-issues, are they better (in either quality or material) than the old Beggars Banquet doubles? I just got married, and although both my husband and I are fans (he even traveled to the States from Scotland to see Gary in Boston), we are on a limited budget and can't afford to buy copies of stuff we already have. Is there any reason to buy the new re-issues, apart from a few (I'm trying to convince him that he hasn't lived until he's heard 'U Got the Look')? Yeah, I know it's "Gary does 80's pop", but I still love it...... To: Yeah me I have the 12" and 7" releases. Excellent version of this song. The b-side was called "It takes two to Wango" and is an instrumental. Ikon released nothing officially but Tik allowed me to release a live cassette of one of their gigs at the Hippodrome in London. Unfortunately they sold about 10 copies of 1000. It was a good gig too. A couple of strange things, about view the interview, then a question. What was up with the grey bar going back and forth across the screen obstructing Gary? And why was the interviewer's voice so low and garbled? So I thought, well it's my slow connection and Cyrix 180mhz processor that's the problem. Well no, At work, I've got a 450mhz PII, 128 mb memory and a satellite Internet connection at speeds up to around 384 kbs! And it was exactly the same, although I could view it full screen, which was very cool! OK, the question. Gary mentioned in the interview that "Cars" was the first and only one of two songs he has written on the bass guitar. So what is the other song? I'm still waiting an answer from Gary. Any ideas?
