Praying To the Aliens... Speedy or WHAT!! Talking Numan doll The Five Suggestions of Michael Tressler VwAH XFM, Gary appearing on ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Aug 1999 14:45:24 -0500 From: Valerie Iglar-Mobley Subject: "It's like rain on your wedding day... it's a free ride when you've already paid" To: The Gary Digest Dear numanoids all, For all that he was writing in hostile reaction to what I posted, I actually agree with the sentiment Don McCrum wrote in his "A GN Related Mild Rant." I think the Dige does suffer from an excess of negativity. I haven't done it yet, but I've been tempted to count how many posts are negative in tone and how many positive, just to see how they stack up. What I think is really unfortunate is when we trash each other here. We're all going to have individual likes and dislikes about Gary's music (and I dread to see the deluge against Clea for actually liking "U Got The Look"!) so some criticism about the music I suppose is inevitable, but when we turn on each other I find that very discouraging. Aren't we all here out of the same love of Gary's music? In contrast, my loved one, Val, is on the Boy George digest. The messages there tend to be breeziest kind of light-hearted, winsome gushing I've ever seen. I'm not sure that's what I would like to see here in exchange, but by comparison, we numanoids have to be the most whiny bunch of complainers I've ever heard. Maybe it has to do with the music itself. Boy George and Culture Club make happy-go-lucky pop songs painted in bright colors, while Gary's music is dark, despairing, defiant, and painted in all the lush tones of black, matte black, glossy black, and inky midnight black. Maybe that's why the people drawn to those juxtaposing styles may have those kinds of dispositions. I should point out, though, in my defense I actually do not care one whit how popular Gary is. I have enough access to sources that I'm fairly confident no matter how far underground he burrows, I'll be able to follow his releases (unless he sinks to copying them in his garage... even then, maybe). I agree, it's the music that's important. However, in his autobiography he wrote that in the latter half of the 80s, with every album he faced the possibility that it would be his last, that his career would be over because his finances were so uncertain. THAT is my sole concern regarding his success. I want Gary to NEVER be facing that question again. I want the only question facing him in his music to be posed by his muse alone. As long as he wants to make music, I want to be able to hear it. And if making some marketing decisions will ensure that that's possible, so be it. I hope you noticed, though, Don, that in reaction to the complaining, criticism and negativity you found on the Digest... you wrote in to complain, criticize and be negative. And no, it isn't lost on me that I'm doing the same thing. love, Ben Iglar-Mobley proud member of the Boys Like Us (who do FAR less complaining) * * * "You could say I'm pretentious You could say I'm the nazz You could hail me as the new king of it all... I feel you waiting for me Waiting to dig my grave I'm growing scared of everything you could say" --Gary "If you loved me, I'd be number one If you loved me, I'd never come undone If you loved me, I'd be Madonna-rich If you loved me, I'd be one lucky bitch" --Boy George ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Aug 1999 20:51:50 -0500 (EST) From: Mark Hubbard Subject: Another Numan cudo on the net To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello all, Just saw this on the wall of sound web site. I did a search for Numan, and this is one of the items it turned up. the band Weezer is giving some answers the basic questions, IE: Top five albums off the top of your head, in no particular order. "The Pleasure Principle by Gary Numan. I was like eleven. I was way into that; I still am. It's the only record I can listen to from that era that makes me feel as good, or better, as it did then." I've been doing it for a month or so now and thought it would be cool if we 'the Global Community of Numan Fans' got into a group to do some searching together. If you fancy it, I've started a group called.....wait for it........Numanoids & Aliens If you are already seti-searching, then you can transfer your account to this group. If you aren't seti-searching and want to have a look, goto: http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu./ All you need to know is there. If you want to know anything else, drop me a line. Club ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 21:28:05 +0100 From: "ncpl" Subject: Speedy or WHAT!! To: "numan digest" Hi Noids! What a good night it is tonight.....!!!! On Monday I read that the latest re-issues are available from Beggars, so I filled in the bits and placed my order. I didn't receive the confirmation Email as I thought I would, and began to wonder if this was going to be another purchasing horror story that sometimes appears on the digest. I got home tonight (Weds) feeling a bit stressed (long day, lots going on at work etc) to find a small parcel at waiting for me at home. Obviously throwing all other post aside, I opened the package to find a fantastic looking copy of Dance and the Plan waiting to be caressed. All I can say is "Well done beggars !". Turn around in less than a day is pretty bloody good...I appreciate that. The discs themselves : Dance got a good playing on the gear downstairs and lives up to my very high expectations as Dance has always been a firm fave of mine. The bass is awesome and everything else is damn fine...this one's going to be getting a lot of playing over the next...well...long time. The Plan's on the PC right now. No high expectations of the sound here, but, what a good deal. 24 tracks for 8 quid ! Both discs continue with the excellent v.f.m. artwork. Every panel has something, either text or some picture on it. Even the disc itself is dressed for the party. Considering some of the recent criticism of the more recent re-issues, these have to get top marks. Beggars are doing us proud and I definitely feel like I'm getting good value (£17.50 inc. p&p for 2 CD's)..And service, too. Finally, how the hell did I not hear the actual Dance track before ???? I thought I was up there in the "I've got everything" club. Obviously not ! As I said at the beginning, I am having a fine night !!! Ciao NickiNu - "Kiss my arse goodbye, the show goes rusty".............they even published the lyrics !!! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Aug 1999 10:30:49 -0500 From: "Craig Stenseth" Subject: Talking Numan doll To: This is a multi-part message in MIME format. C'mon, mon! This is ringing uncool. This is just too restrictive. I took up Rush L's tree issue in a very FRIENDLY chit-chat sort of way. Joey Lindstrom himself didn't seem to mind. If memory serves, he replied to what I posted in a very civil fashion. He read my opinion and then I read his. I commented on the Rush (Limbaugh) line that Joey used in his signature tag only because it referred to trees. TREES. You see, I really enjoy being around trees. In a taped interview (supplied to me by Mr. John Carramao) Gary casually mentioned that he enjoys London's (Greater London's?) Green Belt because of the trees. ("It's quite nice") I mentioned this and thus kept all this tree business Numan-related as well. I don't care if one is "Conservative" or not but if someone throws into the pot something like "the best thing about trees is what you do with them after you chop them down," I have just got to throw in my two cents. Your Suggestions remind me of the Ten Commandments that were recently posted. We've all tried to refrain from the Taboo Subjects here at GND but I'm willing to wager that they WILL eventually bob up to the surface from time to time since that is the nature of people conversing about any subject. (You want some off-topic, try dealing with the My Bloody Valentine List--OY!) I don't want to unsubscribe to The Digest just because someone quotes Limbaugh! It's just like I don't want to disown (?) or "unsubscribe to" my oldest brother because he fires Limbaugh quotes at me when he thinks that I'm sounding like, and I quote, "a mush-brained Berzerkly pot-and-acid fueled commie arse" and is trying to get me to straighten up and fly right. I mean, it was my oldest brother who introduced me to the writings of Philip K. Dick--yet ANOTHER Numan tie-in.
