It works for me. It's good to have a new Numan fan on the list - you're unlikely to bore u= s with "Of course, Gary should go back to making music like he did in 1979"= Change Your Mind is (not surprisingly) the song you mean. Written by the same bloke who did New Thing From London Town, it was released as a singl= e in 1985, and despite being Gary's biggest hit (in the UK) for years, I think it is now very hard to get on CD. The only proper CD release was in 1989 when it was included on the album "Automatic" by "Sharpe & Numan", a collection of songs written by Bill Sharpe (music) and Gary (most of the lyrics) and released by Polydor. New= Thing From London Town was notable by it's absence, as that was released = on Numa records, and Polydor preferred to make a few extra quid than be true= to the project.... but I digress. The only other CD release of Change Your Mind that I'm aware of was the U= S DJ compilation "Prehistoric Razormaid!", which contained a remix. Both these CD's are hard to get hold of now. Your best bet is probably to keep= an eye on the multitude of UK 80's compilations that are coming out. Chan= ge Your Mind was a fairly big radio hit in the UK, so stands a small chance = of appearing on one of these. I was the person who mentioned dEUS and Project Pitchfork. I don't think = I said they were influenced by Numan, but Gary remixed PP's single "I Live Your Dream", which is...OK. Much better are dEUS, although they are very,= very, very weird. Their last album, "The Ideal Crash", is their most mainstream, and IMO is a work of genius. "I'm drawing myself the ideal crash But I know I won't believe me. How can a man kill gently, How long before it's all done, How can he leave someone, How can he do it softly?" Saw them at V99 (a rock festival) and they were.... well, they opened wit= h Sister Dew, one of the best love songs ever written: "I enjoyed to see her idle, She never had no worries, nothing vital =46rom the day I met her to the final..... afternoon. There was something there, I can't describe it, We were kicking ass, we didn't fight it. She never once suspected she had it Coming soon. I was raised with compassion and they said I was loved for the loving that I spread Now the only thing remaining is this chill. And the only emptiness I need to fill Is understanding what it is that made me kill." I'm transported. Matthew Roberts P.S. I have phoned up Beggars to try and order it that way, but all I keep getting is a recorded message...anyone done this? I could also print out the form and send a cheque, but the library computers don't allow that. Well, I have a credit card but being a cautious Brit I don't like to flash it about on the internet. I just looked up the address and price details on the Beggars web site and sent a cheque (made out to Beggars Banquet) for #9.00 and a covering letter. About 10 days later, hey presto - Dance. I wonder why it is not being released generally until November. Makes no sense as far as I can see. By the way, it really is superb in all respects. The packaging is stunning, although I do agree that the picture of Gary which is hidden behind the CD is a bit frightening - I nearly dropped the CD in shock when I first saw it. On a separate note I bought Strange Charm last week. So what you cry. Well this Strange Charm is a compilation of the usual Numa tracks and live recordings released previously on numerous compilations. Very confusingly it is packaged using images from the Berserker phase. I haven't got it with me at the moment but I can post full track details later if anyone wants them. Nothing of great interest though. Just to top it all off, it contains the cheesiest sleeve notes I have ever seen. Closing with the line "There has never been a better time to join the Tubeway Army". I will post the full text next week I get a chance. All the best Gary Warwickshire England ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Not even years of drinking would shift this. The Tik Tok Man asked about the band that did the Weird Al Jankovic-style cover of "Cars". It was the Barron Knights and I seem to remember their version being called "I Know Who Dunnit". A mate of mine had a tape of the album, but I've completely forgotten what it was called. Other "hilarious" Numan take-offs from that era included Kenny Everett as "Gary Oldman" taking off Numan's characteristic hand gesticulations from the "Cars" video by picking his nose and flicking snot at the camera. I also remember, from my childhood, another Barron Knights style band called Candlewick Green doing a version of "Are Friends Electric" on some crappy TV show, but I don't remember the point of that at all. Which reminds me, I saw yet another Castle compilation in the shops the other day. It was called something like "Strange Charm Plus", but frankly I couldn't be arsed to give it anything more than a cursory glance as it looked tacky and it didn't appear to have anything of interest on it other than the usual live cuts and Numa album tracks that have turned up on all the other compilations. As for the Bill Nelson mix of Sister Surprise, both the Warriors LP and the Sister Surprise 12" list Sister Surprise as being produced by Numan only, while some other tracks (like Poetry and Power) are produced by Bill Nelson and Numan, so one could be knocking around. Most of the Bill Nelson tracks have a sustained (E-Bowed?) guitar sound on them (like the bits on the song Warriors after the chorus). I always assumed that Nelson played those bits himself. To: Gary Numan Digest Does anyone recall when Gary appeared on Jim'll Fix It? I guess it was around 1979-1980 and I vaguely recall that a young lad had it 'fixed' to meet Gary. Normally the weekly pop star meetings were quite embarrassing to watch because the doting fan would be required to stand or sit next to the star while they performed their latest single - difficult to do without looking completely gorky. Anyway, Gary, having rather more class than most overcame this difficulty by placing the young fan in his black Teletour car and had him circle the stage while Gary sang Down in the Park (I think). Jim no doubt appeared through the dry ice at the end of the number with a cheery 'How's about that then' or suchlike and asked Gary to present the fan with a cheap gold foil gong. Does anyone recall this, or have I imagined it? Maybe the lad who had it 'fixed' is now a member of this digest? Are you out there and if so, are you prepared to admit it? I apologise to non-UK digesters who will not have a clue what this is about. Don't worry though. you can probably tell by my vagueness that this TV appearance did not have quite the impact of the appearance on Saturday Night Live which you lucky folk experienced. Actually, a quick question on that. I saw the SNL clip at a convention a while back and, was that really Steve Martin playing synth? Sorry if detailed discussions of Jim'll Fix It have taken place in the past but I'm new to this. All the best Gary England ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Many years GN appeared on the Leo Sayer TV Show (gulp) on the BBC. For those of you who don't know who Leo Sayer is, you don't know how lucky you are. Anyway, at that time I managed to , ahem, 'resource' a monitor mix of music from the show from a friend at the Beeb. It's not bad quality, but it is mono - no Nicam in the early 80's, I'm afraid. The first track is a completely different mix and edit of This is New Love, from Berserker. If memory serves, it was broadcast way before the album was released, so at the time was completely new. The second track is a different version of On Broadway - very much done in the GN Berserker / Warriors style, although it does have Leo Sayer singing alternate lines with GN. Please do NOT bore me to death with another Copyright slag-fest; if people want to hear these unreleased tracks, I'm quite happy to accommodate. If enough people are interested, maybe I could place them on someone's GN site. On the other hand, maybe no-one wants to hear them and I've just offended everyone's delicate legal sensibilities.
