The Record Label finally delivers Yet another compilation ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Sep 1999 23:05:52 -0700 From: Derek Langsford Subject: ADMINISTRIVIA To: numan@cs.uwp.edu My Fellow Numanoids, You should all have received the message from Dave Datta, my fellow Producer of the Gary Numan Digest, that cs.uwp.edu is on its last legs and will come off line in the near future, potentially taking the Digest with it. Do not fear, we are working furiously behind the scenes to make sure this does not happen, however, assuming the Digest survives, it will definitely be moving and have a different address. The Digest made its first appearance on September 26, 1992 (at the time that "Machine and Soul" was released). Back in those days the World Wide Web didn't even exist and the Internet was all in ASCII. While the Internet has progressed I continue to believe there is a place for the Digest amongst all the spiffy Numan websites and even the Numan Bulletin Board. Receiving a twice weekly email of Numan does not require the time or energy of searching through web pages, or chasing threads on the UBB. And I am glad that others have expressed their desire to see the Digest continue. We are close to our 7th anniversary and we are determind to not just let it die. We have no details yet, but we are exploring various options. If possible we will try to maintain its basic features, including twice weekly distribution. It may even stay the same but with a new address. If things go in another direction we may be able to prevent reposts and have automatic subscribing etc. It's all in the hardware and software. We will let you know as soon as things start to firm up as to which direction the Digest will be taking. Our goal is to keep it under the control of people who care, not some anonymous list-hosting company, and to make it even better. I doubt you will ever get your CDs. Gary told a group of us after a night on the Dream Corrosion tour that the Nicholson family owe Numa a tonne of money. I guess you ordered your CDs on the strength of Joey Lindstroms outburst. This is twice now you've made mention of this recently. Obviously you're trying to provoke me into another rant. You won't get that, but you'll get a clarification - that way, those who weren't here when that all went down won't buy into your inference that, by association, I too am a "charlatan". At the time, Matthew's main criticism - at least, what he said publicly - of the Nicholson releases was that they were a "rip-off", specifically that the releases were there only to milk Numanoids out of even more money. Remember, this was at the height of the Receiver Records release-per-month phase. My arguments in support of the release were based on that premise only - my position was basically "so what? If they're willing to sell and we're willing to buy, who gets hurt? And much of this material is new-to-CD." At no time did Matthew state publicly (likely for fear of legal repercussions) that the Nicholsons were "charlatans" or that people may not get the product they ordered. Had that argument come up, that would have cast the whole thing in a different light. And my position is basically unchanged - I'd tell anyone who was thinking of ordering to sit tight and wait until we get some confirmations that the orders ARE being filled (and so far, there's been a small trickle of these), and *THEN* decide whether or not to order the CD. And, given the two-year delay, I'd recommend ordering by credit card... that way, if the merchandise fails to show up, you can charge-back the charge when it shows up on your bill (and thus risk no money). I think Derek, however, had a slightly negative review of the CD (was that you, Derek?), saying it didn't entirely live up to its billing. I'll likely buy a copy in October, once I've actually got some money to spend again (gosh, that'll be nice...) As to the Nicholsons owing Numan money... if true, I'd say now's the time Gary should be going after 'em. :-) / From the messy desktop of Joey Lindstrom / Email: Joey@GaryNumanFan.NU or joey@lindstrom.com / Phone: +1 403 313-JOEY / FAX: +1 413 643-0354 (yes, 413 not 403) / Visit The NuServer! http://www.GaryNumanFan.NU / Visit The Webb! http://webb.GaryNumanFan.NU / / Rush Limbaugh's Updated 35 UNDENIABLE TRUTHS / / NUMBER 2 / / The vast majority of the rich in this country did not inherit their / wealth; they earned it. Thought I'd come out of hiding as a serial lurker to respond to this one. If I didn't know better I'd have thought that this was Andy McHaffie trying to (yet again) embarrass me (as he always does!!) with tales of my sordid past (though not anywhere near as sordid as his!! :-) ). He's even been know to ask Gary about this event at Reading Festival. Yes it was me, and some of the other digest members have even been (un)lucky enough to see it again on video in the not too distant past on a drunken night (was it before or after the porno!?!?). For most people the most memorable thing about the show seems to have been what I was wearing! Those grey dungarees and white polo neck still stand up today as the height of fashion!! And didn't those new trainers make my feet look big!! The best bit about the whole thing was that I got to spend the whole day with Gary, the band and his mum and dad, not just the five or ten minutes that went out on air. And despite my miserable looks (due to extreme stage fright) I had a great day - probably a bit too much for a 10 year old boy to take in - if I did it again today (ooo those dungarees'll be a bit tight) then I imagine it would be very different!! Oh, and the other good thing was that he gave me his flying jacket (which is now actually too small for me, after years of it being too big). I actually wrote another letter before I got on the show asking to go flying with him but that teletour car was a bit more unusual I guess... Two points to clarify though - it was 1982 and the song was Music For Chameleons. Oh yes, and I did still look completely gorky - check out those glasses the bbc made me wear!!! And the haircut. :-) Have to say though that this is generally a subject I try to avoid these days (unless I'm with Andy) cos people just say I was a miserable sod. In fact, I got e-mailed once by someone I'd never met (can't remember who) to say that I was a spoilt twat. But there you go. Right, I'm off back into lurksville now!! Anyway, I've only just sort of waded through them with headphones in the computer CD drive and they definitely sound clear as a bell, much better than the originals. The extra tracks, most of them are new to me (or new to CD for me at least). I Don't Believe is IMO Gary's best ever B-side. Children is an excellent instrumental. The remixes aren't quite my cup of tea, but I'll take them all. Shame is another great B-side, should have been on the album like IDB. Icehouse and Tread Careful are OK, but sound like MR leftovers, and the two remixes of My World Storm are well dodgy, but Gary had nothing to do with them, so I wasn't expecting anything really special. It's nice to see that they have kept the original artwork, and have extensive liner notes (which I haven't read yet). I also saw The Skin Mechanic, which I'm not going to buy as I already have the original CD, and nothing is added to it. It's my least fave live album with the exception of Live At The Roxy, and I don't think having it remastered will make as much difference as it will to studio albums. They had also put I Can't Stop before I Die: You Die for some reason. It'll be good for people who missed out on the original, however. :-) Happy with the new reissues, James All times are MDT (GMT-0600) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 19:26:40 +0100 From: Steve Perryman Subject: Now then now then To: "'Gary Numan Digest'" Hello again In response to Gary Perkins' question, Gary actually appeared on Jim'll Fix It around March 1982. He did an edited version of "Music for Chameleons" and the kid did indeed get to drive the tarted-up wheelchair round the studio set. Incidentally, if anyone taped Gary's Radio 1 interview with Richard Skinner in January 1982, they'll have an early version of "Music for Chameleons". Sadly I didn't record it, although I don't remember it being that different to the final version. Interesting news on AFE about Gary's next album and the planned guest appearance of Toni Halliday. I'm actually looking forward to the new album now. I managed to get the UK IRS/EMI reissues, and thought I'd pass some info along to those who might be interested. The new three releases are Metal Rhythm, Outland and The Skin Mechanic, which have been out of print on cd (in the US anyway) since the early 90's. Metal Rhythm is the same as the original UK cd, as opposed to the US version, New Anger, although it does feature the William Orbit remix of My Dying Machine from that album which is worth the sticker price in itself. It has the bonus tracks I Don't Believe (b side to New Anger), Children (b side to New Anger - instrumental), Devious (Andy Piercy Mix), and America (remix). 15 tracks total. Outland has 5 bonus tracks Shame (b side to Heart), Icehouse (b side to Heart), Tread Careful (b side to Heart), My World Storm (US promo mix0, My World Storm (alternative mix). 18 tracks total. The Skin Mechanic has the same 13 tracks as the original cd but in a slightly different order. All three cds have extensive booklets with new lengthy essays and quotes from reviews of the time. All have been digitally remastered. Not Gary's best material in my opinion (and he told me he detests the remixes of My World Storm) but these cds are highly recommended (by me).
