This new 2 CD rehash compilation Anthology is from Castle Communications i.e. the same people who put out TechnoArmy, and from which Eagle Records was born, but not all those Trojan/Rialto compilation rip-offs. So how did Caslte get in ont he act? Did they buy out Trojan/Rialto? Anyone know? And if Steve Malins did some writing for it, does that mean this has Gary's OK as Steve writes for Alien too? To: numan@cs.uwp.edu hello derek and fellow numanites my name is jeff m. biggs and i am 32 years old. i have been listening to gary numan for so long, its hard to give a correct date, i would have to about 16, or 17 years, give or take. i live in ontario. canada, and am a profeshional disk-jockey. i listen to all top 40, and all retro 1980"s music. i invite anyone to e-mail me at jbiggs2@home.com to talk about music, or just to talk. i look forward to your replys your canadian numan fan jeff m. biggs ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Sep 1999 13:42:21 -0400 From: Matt Hazlinsky Subject: hello To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello everyone, I figured since i am drunk enough, i would take the time to post my first message to the Numan list serve. A little background on myself, I am 21 yrs old,a student at Virginia Tech, and am planning on going into the Air Force when i graduate. I got into Numan about a year ago, im ashamed to say. In the states, we dont't have much exposure to artists as incredible as he is. Of course, i have always loved "Cars" and the video that is played sometimes on VH1. However, I remember seeing a different clip of Numan on VH1 playing a strange guitar chord. The clip was only about 5 seconds and i dont know what song he was playing but is fascinated me. THe music just sounded so powerful and strange that i had to investigate. From there I bought Tubeway Army not knowing any of the songs and not knowing what to expect. Upon listening, i loved it. Especially the alien synth beats of songs like My Shadow in Vain, it was different than anything i had ever listened to before. From there i found Numan's official homepage, listened to clips from Exile, and was hooked. I then ordered Replicas and Telekon from Nustreet, bought Exile, Dark LIght, Sacrifice, some Archive CD vol. 2 put out by Rialto and The Pleasure Principle. Just a couple of days ago i recieved my copy of Dance. Let me tell you i was blown away once again by Numan's music. I had always been curious about this album after reading about it so much but i did not expect it to be this good. I even bought Another Green World by Brian Eno as the two albums were compared in the liner notes. AGW is good, but i dont think it is as good as Dance. I love Mick Karn's bass and am expecting a couple Japan CD's to arrive any day now after ordering them off of CD NOW. My favorite songs off Dance are A Subway I called You, Stories, Exhibition, Stormtrooper in Drag, My Brothers Time, Cry the Clock Said... There isn't a bad song on the album. Anyway this is just my opinion. Lately, for the past 3-4 months, i have been fascinated with any early 80's synth music. Some of my other favs include Tears for Fears, OMD, New Order, Joy Division, Depeche Mode, Morrissey, The Smiths, Duran Duran. My favorite current band is Suede. Do any of you guys enjoy listening to these bands? Well, for the next Numan CD, i hope he incorporates some live drums instead of the drum machine. Sacrifice and Exile are good but are very similar in style. Hopefully, more guitars and synths can be added. I find myself liking the exta track Metal Beat on Sacrifice better than the other songs. I love the line "Kneel down bitch and be truly blessed". Awesome. One final question. I have access to buy Numan albums such as Strange Charm and Beserker at local CD stores. While i already have a lot of the songs on Strange Charm on that Rialto VOl. 2 CD, i dont know a lot about Beserker. What are your guys views on this album as i am somewhat hesitant to buy late 80's Numan material. Well, its about time to sign off. Just thought I'd let you guys know i was here. I've been trying to enlighten my fellow Americans on the genius of Numan, at least the one's in my dormitory. Most can't appreciate it though, and simply remember that "weird" song Cars but don't know who Gary Numan is. Typical i guess. Later on fellas. But what I said was: >Originally advertized as having all the mixes, the CD doesn't have the >instrumental versions of Radio Heart (damn, time to get a Karaoke machine - >NOT!) and several Like a Refugee mixes are missing. And actually, it doesn't have the instrumental mixes of any of the Radio Heart songs (there was one on each single). Then again, without any vocals there is no Numan input on the songs. I am surprised they didn't put the intrumentals on the Radio Heart CD as bonus tracks. It would have given those of us who are lucky enough to own the original CD at least some reason to consider buying the reissue (not much of one though). I think it was Dave on the UBB who said it didn't live up to its original billing. I am waiting for mine to arrive any day now. If you want either of the Numa/Nicholson discs, try Sister Ray (www.sisterray.co.uk) which has them for #10.99 apiece. Mr. Calvert, for all his wit, has been dead these 11 years... --------------- BOB CALVERT: from Sounds (UK), 29th October 1981 Tales from the Crypt It was a week of "Hype" last week when Robert Calvert, former Hawkwind vocalist, held a press reception (or, rather, a lig) to launch his latest project. With the company (un)comfortably installed in the morgue of the old Charing Cross Hospital, Calvert seemed remarkably undamaged for a former space cowboy as he chatted informally from a stage of sorts and mimed to songs from his new album 'Hype - The Songs Of Tom Mahler'. Among many memorable moments was his discussion of Gary Numan's recent alleged possession of an offensive weapon. "It was probably his mouth", commented Calvert. [rest of article snipped for lack of Numan content] Carol Clerk ----------------------- If it had been his mouth, a certain photo on a certain Australian Numan site would be even more disturbing than it already is. ;-) Random realization: that article is dated exactly three weeks prior to my birth. Wasn't Gary in the middle of flying around the world at the time? Another item: I have a radio show here at college (new wave/electronic stuff, of course). I was exploring the station's archives the other day when I discovered the soundtracks (vinyl) section, which has a lot of great '80s movie soundtracks (that is, the soundtrack is great, not necessarily the movie). One of these was for a movie called TIMES SQUARE - and "Down in the Park" was on it! Has anybody seen this movie? Is it available at fine video stores everywhere? What context is "DITP" used in in the film (assuming, after the "Dark City" fiasco, that it's in the movie at all)?
