Subject: Berserker To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hey now Matt, if you're contemplating buying Berserker, contemplate no longer; Berserker is definitely top o'the line Numan. I consider it his most psychedelic sounding album. Child with the ghost (written by Gary about the late Paul Gardiner (Tubeway Army and Gary Numan Bassist)) is simply the most beautiful, completely heartbreaking song ever. Also the viola/violin (I'm not sure which,) work by (I believe) Nash the Slash on Cold warning will give you chills down your spine and is worth the price of the album by itself. Definitely buy this album ASAP. Cheers Matthew ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Sep 1999 09:20:06 -0800 From: awa Subject: G'nu's Prince covers, Bowie, etc. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I've used to think, back in the day at least, that a Prince/Gary Numan connection was obvious to everyone. I think Prince's "1919" album had a lot of Numanesque touches, especially in the keyboard sounds but also in vocal delivery and subject matter lyrically (i.e.- funky robotics and sexuality). While I wasn't exactly fired up when Numan did covers of Prince songs (was he several years too late? I don't know), I do think that The Artist would sound good singing and interpreting some Numan tracks. I think "America" could be a nice Numan/The Artist duet. I used to dream of what a "Conversation" done Minneapolis-style might sound like. I'd also like to here a His Royal Badness' version of "Change Your Mind." What I keep forgetting, until I actually listen to it, is that Pleasure Principle is very funky. I don't think he was TRYING to be funky especially, he just naturally WAS funky. When he tries to be funky, though, I don't think he is AS funky. The "funky" era of Numan just doesn't breathe as much as the funky-by-default era. Now, the Peel Sessions from the PP era have much ass to them. I've always thought that even though it would have been obvious for Numan to collaborate with the likes of John Foxx, Billy C, Bill Nelson, Mick Karn, Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno it would have been very interesting if around '80-'83 Numan and Prince had tried a few things out. They're just about the same age and they probably share more than a few things in common, besides that odd throat-centric glottal singing style where they both "swallow" their own words (as my mom would say), they're taste in cars, their similar aesthetic in general, so why not a Numan/The Artist (who will be forever known as Prince) on just one dang track? That would make more sense than a Bowie/Numan collab! As for a Prince tribute record? No-one can do Prince justice because they just can't. Well, maybe Kravitz can. I wish Numan would but he didn't, twice, IMO. It was kinda sophmorish and cheesy from what I remember of it, but none the less, it was cool for the time. It is out of print, I have been looking for a copy for 3 years. I think DITP was played when the main characters were running away through the streets of New York City (perhaps on the corners of Times Square and Fifth Avenue). Gary is writing as if he WERE Rutget Hauer's character, Roy, as he's sitting atop the building, coming to the end of his replicant life. Having fought and chased Harrison Ford's character, Dekkard, all through the abandoned apartment tower, he sits down on the roof opposite Ford's battered and sprawled form, the rain soaking them both, and delivers this speech: "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tanhauser Gate. Forgot to mention the Numan reference on MTV 2 (M2) last night. It was the Marilyn Manson hour. Some of his videos were shown, along with him talking about his favourite artists and videos. The Cars video was shown, but Manson was not shown talking about Numan - despite him talking about the other artists. MTV censorship I guess. Despite this, the video was followed (for some reason) by top US talk show host Conan O’Brien saying how incredible Cars was! Back on the dreaded compilations, Derek mentioned Steve Mallins’ involvement. Interestingly, he was also involved with the “Replicas Rubato” release - the recent album of piano interpretations of Numan tracks such as Friends, Slowcar to China, Jo the Waiter and Sister Surprise. While it is nice to have some Numan that has previously been spread across CD singles and vinyl pulled together on a single CD, the description given to hype the product by The Record Label two years ago is not delivered. At 64.20 minutes there was room for more material that may have brought the CD closer to the original idea of it being a comprehensive look at this collaboration. As I have said before, the instrumental versions of the Radio Heart songs are notably absent, but so are several mixes of Like A Refugee which originally came out on two CD singles. Not that I really want to have more mixes of these songs, it is just my sense of completeness that is complaining. The artwork is underwhelming - no info on when the tracks were recorded, who the musicians were, release dates, chart info. The covers of the singles are reproduced and what struck me was the cover of London Times which has pictures of several London icons, including the Beatles. The Beatles. Huh? Was this a joke or just ignorance? Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings, really. I would assume that all Liverpudlians boycotted the single as a result. Other little details : "Like A Refugee (I Won't Cry) (accoustic (sic) mix)". Geesh. While I can see the reason for having the demos of the 4 songs on which Gary sang, what the hell is "Tragedy in Blue" tacked on the end for? Where is the connection with Numan? The extended version of Radio Heart sounds flat. Also, the extended mix of RH and LT sound dull. This launches me into a theory: I suspect that this is a compilation of material from: 1. The Radio Heart album CD which provides the digital Radio mixes of the 3 Radio Heart songs on which Gary sings; 2. The All Across the Nation CD single which provides potentially the digital Radio mix but also the Extended mix 3. The Like A Refugee CD singles which provides digital versions of the song; and, 4. The vinyl singles of Radio Heart and London Times, which provides the extended mixes but had to be transferred from vinyl to CD. This would explain the flatness (turntable speed slightly off), and the dullness of these two tracks. Funny, really, 'cos the extended LT was on the "Here I Am" Receiver compilation. So, they potentially could have had 15 more minutes of relevant material (eliminating Tragedy in Blue). Thing is, I think what they have put on is more than enough. It is painful to hear Gary singing on Like a Refugee with an almost country twang. What was Gary thinking? I would only recommend this to completists and those who think that Outland and Machine and Soul are dreadful. This gives those albums some perspective. I am not surprised that Gary wants nothing to do with it. Teh only saving grace is that some more material that was only on vinyl is now on CD. If you need it, try Sister Ray at http://www.sisterray.co.uk where both this and Radio Heart are #10.99. In addition they have the MR, O, and SM reissues for #7.99 and all the BB and Eagle reissues for #6.99. I don't have any connection with Sister Ray apart from being a customer and appreciating their ability to keep prices down compared to the big chains in the UK. (You getting my drift?) I only saw it once, as we didnt have a VCR at the time, but as I recall, (Forgive me, it was 14 yrs ago), DITP appeared at the very end of the film. I think either The Machman or AFE also feature at some point. DITP was a poorly "edited" version, with some of the singy bits removed and replaced with instrumental sections.
