If anyone would like to see it they can write to me. I don't know if this list accepts attachments. Otherwise, I would have posted it to the list. I just got the 'new' Strange Charm and was dissapointed. The live tracks are good, but there aren't enough of them. As for 'rarities' I didn't seem to find any, at least not anything most of us don't have already. The 'Metal Rhythm' reissue is great! It never sounded so good. My only problem is the inclusion of that damn William Orbit remix. All of his remixes sound the same and his production work is shite! The only good thing he ever did was early Torch Song and the first 'Strange Cargo' cd. I'll probably catch hell for saying that... The thought of sitting in those European airport lounges (as I frequently do) amongst the usual din of diddly-did-did-diddly-dee but armed with my afe? praying that someone will call..........it's gotta be done. Quite a surprise that afe? is actually on there when you look at the company it's keeping. I tried the Agadoo tune as well. It makes me laugh but you just couldn't go through with it !! Anyway I screwed up the first send of the tune so am waiting for another to get beamed over. I actually think Cars would be a better/more recognisable tune. You never know.... Still enjoying the latest BB cd's. Finally, I can't believe I am the only digester searching for ET !! Does nobody want to play ?? Gary teaming up with Frank Tovey, now THAT would be something. Gary black-clad, crooning in the mic with Tovey hobbling around the stage covered in shaving-cream or maybe in his Punch outfit, or tarred and feathered or... But since he stopped doing that about fifteen years ago and turned protest singer/songwriter, maybe that's not too likely. Sadly. Anyway, by joining up with the Fad Man, Gary'd at least have a partner whose career is in an even worse a state than his own... Has anyone on this digest ever shopped at NuStreet at Gary Numan's NuWorld website? I placed some orders there at the end of August. My credit cards have been charged, yet still I have not received my orders. Does anyone here know how long it usually takes for NuStreet orders to be shipped once a credit card has been charged? And also, do you know how long it usually takes for an item to ship from the U.K. to the U.S.A.? I e-mailed orders@numan.co.uk to ask about my orders, but I've gotten no response yet. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? It's like I offended someone by thinking of Prince and Numan collab. Not any more burning bushish than a like as David Essex/Gary Numan collab/duet, though. The Prince + Gaz thing is only that: a thing. A mere flickering blip of an idea that seemed F.U.N.N.Y. at the time of thinking it and strangely possible. Now, a Grace Jones + Gary Numan duet would be great. It would be pretty comic booky and it would raise an eyebrow and cause a chuckle here and there. I love Grace. I'd want Karn on bass for that one. Grace and Ray Charles. Gary and Grace--but then there's that HEIGHT issue again!!! Grace is rather tall and Gary's not exactly giant. Oh well, you're a sport. My copy is a PAL version (as I'm in England). The film was produced in 1980, although my video is copyrighted in 1989. Released on Warner Home Video (U.K.) Limited. The catalogue number is 'PES 38071' . Weintraub Entertainment Group has also got it's logo stamped on the cover. The video was distributed by Parkfield Entertainment. The film is a loose story about some rebellious girls who ends up playing some (on the roof Beatles type) gig in the middle of Times Square. Down in the Park (Demo Version) is played for about 1 minute in the middle of the film, it includes vocals too. The film is 106 minutes long and stars Tim Curry and others. But before you rush to get hold of the soundtrack LP. I must tell you that my copy does NOT include the demo version of DITP, however I have since obtained a copy of the demo version on tape if anyone's interested. Hope that helps. Take care my fellow Numanoid chums. Warren. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Sep 1999 18:54:00 -0500 From: Valerie Iglar-Mobley Subject: tired of all his 'bitch'ing To: The Gary Digest Dear numanoids, Thanks, Zigi & Matthew for responding to my quip about Gary's misogyny (yes, I do know how that word's spelled). I agree that Gary's also got some homophobia in his lyrics, but not nearly as much as he has misogyny. And the xenophobia is a new one on me; I'd like to hear more about what you mean by that, Matthew. > ...the line, as it works in the song, is downright *sweet.* You want to unpack that for me? How is calling someone a b---- "sweet"? > Remember it's coming from a perfectly repulsive character... Uh, would that be Gary himself? What exactly are you saying? I'm not so sure I agree the song is about religion. The line, "Now I'm a priest, and 'Jesus lives'" is not necessarily a literal one; Gary is metaphorical and symbolic almost as a matter of course in his lyrics. I adore Gary's art, but his misogyny has always bothered me. His use of the "b" word is not incidental, it appears in five different songs ("Slowcar To China," "The Image Is," "The Pleasure Skin," "Voix," and of course "Metal Beat"). That word passes his lips more than it does any other artist I listen to. In fact, I can't think of another time I've heard it in my collection. He also refers to women as "girls" far more often than he does as "women," though he does also refer to men as "boys" with as much regularity so perhaps that's not so meaningful. [It is a little more loaded, though, since women are infantilized far more so than men in our cultures. Think about how charged calling a black man a "boy" would be and you'll get an idea.] I hate the "b" word. To my ears, it's as foul as the "n" word. It's a put-down that insults the entire group of people. The only time it's ever applied to men is when they're either gay and using it among themselves (like we would "queen," "sister," or "girlfriend") or when it's being used to challenge a guy's masculinity (like calling him a "pussy"). But Gary bandies it around pretty casually, seemingly indifferent to how loaded it is-- like a kid who's found his dad's gun. What would we think if instead he regularly called women "cunts"? I would never try to discourage him using it; he's an artist and art should never be polite, should never apoligize, should never "kiss the arse of convention." Let him express himself how he wants to. But that one lyric is particularly over-the-top. Not only does he call her a b----, but he tells her to kneel down to him. It's degradation; it's beyond sexism, it's hatred of women. Now, there is obviously a difference between what Gary sings and what he believes. Is he himself a misogynist? Probably not. Is he sexist? I don't know; I might guess that he has some sexist attitudes about women, but I don't know him so it would only be a guess. But his songs, yes, do contain sexism. True, they are often stories told from an alien perspective, so I agree, Matthew, we shouldn't take them "at face value." Still, my impression is that when he "b"s a woman, he's in sympathy with that sentiment; it doesn't feel like he's putting that message out there for us to neutrally examine it and decide for ourselves whether we agree with it. To Gary, women are "b"s and "girls" far more often than they ever are "women." Love him, but keep your eyes open. love to all, Benjamin Iglar-Mobley http://home.earthlink.net/~iglarmobley (proud member of the 'Boys Like Us') * * * "And every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back, I hope you feel it!
