After thinking over several ideas, Dave and I believe it would be best if the list maintained independence from commercial enterprises and remained in the control of an administrator with a long committment to Gary Numan. To that end, Joey Lindstrom's offer to set up the Digest at his GaryNumanFan server seemed like the best option. We have been working to overcome difficulties. All could be fixed with a major influx of money, however, we are trying to do this with minimal outlay and without us putting out the hat to subscribers (I love PBS but hate the pledge drives). Joey, after moving house and the server to a new house, has been successful in acquiring a machine to run the Digest software. The Digest runs on Unix and the GNFan server uses Windows NT. Joey and Dave are trying to configure the Digest software to run on this new machine. The Digest will have a new address and we hope we will be able to better control the junk and repeat emails. We will alert all subscribers to the change when it happens. cs.uwp.edu is not going to suddenly fold to our knowledge. I think Prince's "1919" album had a lot of Numanesque touches, especially in the keyboard sounds but also in vocal delivery and subject matter lyrically (i.e.- funky robotics and sexuality). While I wasn't exactly fired up when Numan did covers of Prince songs (was he several years too late? I don't know), I do think that The Artist would sound good singing and interpreting some Numan tracks. I think "America" could be a nice Numan/The Artist duet. I used to dream of what a "Conversation" done Minneapolis-style might sound like. I'd also like to here a His Royal Badness' version of "Change Your Mind." What I keep forgetting, until I actually listen to it, is that Pleasure Principle is very funky. I don't think he was TRYING to be funky especially, he just naturally WAS funky. When he tries to be funky, though, I don't think he is AS funky. The "funky" era of Numan just doesn't breathe as much as the funky-by-default era. Now, the Peel Sessions from the PP era have much ass to them. I've always thought that even though it would have been obvious for Numan to collaborate with the likes of John Foxx, Billy C, Bill Nelson, Mick Karn, Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno it would have been very interesting if around '80-'83 Numan and Prince had tried a few things out. They're just about the same age and they probably share more than a few things in common, besides that odd throat-centric glottal singing style where they both "swallow" their own words (as my mom would say), they're taste in cars, their similar aesthetic in general, so why not a Numan/The Artist (who will be forever known as Prince) on just one dang track? That would make more sense than a Bowie/Numan collab! As for a Prince tribute record? No-one can do Prince justice because they just can't. Well, maybe Kravitz can. I wish Numan would but he didn't, twice, IMO. Best, Alec >> Ween do Prince justice, their live version of shockadelic is top notch. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Oct 1999 10:32:25 BST From: "James Chapman" Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #581 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu On Thu, 14 Oct 99 01:00:01 CDT, Simon Joseph (GREAT e-mail address, BTW :-) ), wrote >WHERE IS THAT NEW FUCKING ALBUM. Arrrrr saving it for the >anniversary addition I expect. > I thought Metal Rhythm and Outland reissues were excellent, because I had only two of the 10 extra tracks included already on CD, and the remixes of My World Storm were totally new to me - I didn't like them at first, but they are growing on me. Also it's worth considering that before these reissues, someone always seemed to be asking for a CD of MR/TSM on the digest (I know, I was one!) so there was obvious demand for it to be reissued. Also it gives Americans who had only heard the New Anger version , the chance to hear the album as Gary originally intended it. I didn't get the Skin mechanic because of you know what, but can anyone tell me why the two last tracks have been switched around? I can't figure out why. Not once did I put "no man" or "Numan" in there. And "Prophecy" is my very favorite off that CD. Oh, and I'm NOT Christian, which I find interesting in this particular context of "translating" lyrics. Something, certainly, to think about. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Oct 1999 23:32:50 -0400 From: shin-ichi ueda Subject: japanese on "The Plan" cover To: Numan Digest Hello. Long live the Numan Digest! Well, I saw the new cover of "The Plan" reissue on the official site, and I found a japanese sentence on it. That's surprising! What's happend, my Gary? Anyway, non-japanese numan fans may be curious what is written. The sentence reads (making the left side down, and read from left to right) "(so)re ga boku no jinnsei" phonetically. ("so" is out from the cover, but certainly the lacked letter is "so") This means in english "That is my life". By the way, it is sad this is perhaps the last contribution to this mailing list. I hope a Numan mailing list lasts in some form. -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Shin-Ichi Ueda Research Fellow of JSPS shin1@logos.tsukuba.ac.jp ------------------------ If my writing this book benefits a student I know nothing about who lives in Japan, would it not follow that there is a good common to him and to me? (2) did anybody buy the numan/nicholson videocassette with radio heart and refugee in north america. i went to order it (for completion's sake) but they were sold out in north american format. and one comment. i noticed (what derek has already mentioned) about new anger and america being included as being a numa recording on new dreams for old. if my memory serves me correct they are on one of the babylon cds as well. i wonder if he recorded before deal with irs was cut? just a thought i could be wrong ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Oct 1999 11:16:35 +0100 From: "artemis" Subject: Numan on DVD (sort of) To: "Gary Numan" >Not to incite a huge debate on copy write... but... I have a mp3 file of friends, dark and noise noise but the programme I normally use is winamp, to convert to wav then adaptec to burn to disc. However a error message saying that the wav file is not convertible to cd quality. Any suggestions? Just a footnote on this subject: I have official versions of everything ever released but these version are not available nor are at present going to become available well maybe in twenty years time for the 40th anniversary! In simple terms if I could buy them i would, but I cannot so I'll make my own. I totally agree Simon. I would pay good money for a DVD of any Living Ornaments concert with a choice of camera angles as DVD is able to deliver. Now I have a question. I bought a CDR that records Video CD. I also bought a DVD player that plays Video CD. So it should be possible to convert video to an avi file then convert to video CD? What would the quality be like? This would be a great way of preserving my old Numan footage before the VCR finally chews them to pieces! I've been kind of quiet for the last few months...lurking due to major life changes. New job, new relationship, new house. My new job has put me in control of a non-commercial radio station - KUSF 90.3 FM in San Francisco. So, I'm back in a position to support my favorite musician! On Sunday November 14th, 1999, from 4pm to 6pm Pacific Standard Time, I will be hosting a segment of our weekly show "Spotlight" and of course I'm using my two hours to focus on the music of Gary Numan. KUSF can be heard worldwide via webcast. Just go to our audiolinks page on the KUSF website at and click on one of the two links. I figured if anyone would be interested in my return to the airwaves after 9 years...all the numanoids on this list would. Listen in if you can!
