Gary Numan Digest Sun, 24 Oct 99 Volume 1 : Issue 584 Today's Topics: Gary Numan Digest V1 #583 More on Dream Corrosion sound quality singles collection wish ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Oct 1999 09:34:49 -0700 From: "Paula" Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #583 To: "Gary Numan" Hi all u Gary Numan fans out there I\ve been a fan of his since i was 12 year old and i'm 32 now so a long time. I do prefer more of his earlier music although anything Gary brings out is good. One of my old favourites has gotta be Remind Me to Smile it was just such a cool song. Watching him live was amazing just been inches away from the real thing. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Oct 1999 13:28:57 -0700 From: Derek Langsford Subject: More on Dream Corrosion sound quality To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Benjamin wrote, quoting Rod: > Dream Corrosion in my opinion is absolutely terrible > (sound quality) I asked the engineer who does my cd mastering if he could > "fix" it and he said he couldn't without the master tapes, and Gary > wouldn't give us the masters for the other albums so that's probably not > going to happen (I've given up asking him for anything). When DC was originally released the sound quality, or lack thereof, was one of the hottest debates on the Digest. "Great track selection, horrible sound" was the anthem. When I used to be in regular communication with Gary, I asked him about it, and he said something to the effect that there's nothing wrong with it, must be your CD player or a bad batch of CDs. As we know, all the CDs sound lacklustre. Gary just either didn't want to beleive it, or knew it, and was trying to cover his arse. I have heard it said the DC video actually has better sound. I can't say first hand. If this is the case could the video be used as the source for a new master? DC is the second worst sounding CD put out by Gary. The worst is Babylon 7 which sounds more like a bootleg than a proper release. At least most of the Babylon 7 stuff has been remastered. Whether it is Gary's doing or Eagle's, not letting Cleopatra have master tapes for their releases has been very poor thinking IMO. And Gary quashed the idea of Rod putting unique-to-CD tracks on the US releases for some reason. I just don't think Eagle and Cleopatra are talking to each other, let alone coordinating releases. There was a rumour (not Numan ;-) that Eagle were preparing a live boxed set, presumeably remastered. So there may be a better version released sometime. I can't imagine a live boxed set would sell well - only to avid Numan fans and completists. Glad to say that with all the Numan reissues in the US, not many have shown up in used stores. That assumes people are buying them of course. Derek San Diego, California, which after having had the coolest summer since 1933, has had the warmest temperatures of the year and the hottest October on record. Weird. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Oct 1999 00:41:39 +0100 From: "Antonio" Subject: singles collection wish To: "Gary Numan" I have tried to put his list in order of release, though got a bit confused at some of the collaborations... I *think* its all in the right order, but, whatever... The utimate Numan singles collection CD would have on it, in this order, and all in plain old 7" mixes... 1 - That's Too Bad 2 - Bombers 3 - Down In The Park 4 - Are 'Friends' Elecric? 5 - Cars 6 - Complex 7 - We Are Glass 8 - I Die : You Die 9 - This Wreakage 10 - Stromtrooper In Drag 11 - She's Got Claws 12 - Love Needs No Disguise 13 - Music For Chameleons 14 - We Take Mystery (To Bed) 15 - White Boys And Heroes 16 - Warriors 17 - Sister Surprise 18 - Berserker 19 - My Dying Machine 20 - Change Your Mind 21 - Your Fascination 22 - Call Out The Dogs 23 - Miracles 24 - This Is Love 25 - I Can't Stop 26 - New Thing From London Town 27 - Radio Heart 28 - London Times 29 - All Across The Nation 30 - New Anger 31 - America 32 - No More Lies 33 - I'm On Automatic 34 - Heart 35 - Emotion 36 - The Skin Game 37 - Machine and Soul 38 - Like A Refugee (I Won't Cry) 39 - A Question of Faith 40 - Absolution 41 - Dominion Day Though added to this could be the e-reg version of Cars, the 'Live EP'/White Noise version of AFE, since this was a hit single, and possibly some of the songs which could be considered singles, such as Metal and Magic, perhaps the Fear Factory version of 'Cars', as it seems almost like a new Numan release in a way. And this definitive collection should be backed up with a video going on sale simultaneously, featuring every video Gary has made, even if most of them *are* already available and/or dodgy, and despite the fact it would have a different track list to the singles collection album I want so much. (live versions of video-less songs, perhaps, as on New Man Numan?) I want a copy of the video to Metal! I want a copy of the new Cars video! I want to see if there actually *does* exist a 'night time' version of the Radio Heart single video. I want 'Change Your Mind' on video.. and Dominion Day! I want *every* official video Gary has made, on one tape, just like Cure fans can buy, just like Nick Cave fans can buy, just like Blondie fans can buy. All this, alas, seems too much to ask :/ I can't see it ever happening, but it *would* be cool, and very possibly a very good selling album, which I don't think a Cars and AFE-less follow-up to Premier Hits would be.
