Sorry, can't remember who it was that wrote about it, whatever variety of speakers those were that make 'Sacrifice' and 'Exile' sound like normal recordings, instead of ones being played through a rug. Might've worked on 'Corrosion' as well. > 1 - That's Too Bad... > ...41 - Dominion Day Well, Anti, that would indeed be the complete Gary singles collection, but 'Premier Hits' has already been released, so that would make those first 17 redundant. Then, of course, comes the rights question. Doubtful Eagle/Cleopatra are going to secure the rights to the 'Automatic' singles, so that cuts out 20, 32, and 33. I would guess they also don't have the rights to the Nicholson songs (though I imagine he would love to have them on a major release) so that would leave out 27, 28, 29, and 38. There's some question about the track listing for 'New Dreams For Old', so we still don't know if they could include the IRS songs, putting 30, 31, and 34 in limbo. That would leave exactly the line-up for a hits collection that I've been ranting about all this time. A single disc, which would get snapped up far more than a double would. > ...a very good selling album, which I > don't think a Cars and AFE-less follow-up to Premier Hits would be. Well, maybe, maybe not. Think about it. There are probably a lot of households out there that have a copy of 'Premier Hits' in the Numan section of their collections... and nothing else. If a second singles collection were marketed as just that (which it looks like 'New Dreams' will not be, instead just one more collection) to let people know that it would perfectly complement their 'Premier Hits,' I think quite a few of those people would buy such a disc. That's exactly what Depeche Mode did with their new singles package, which picked up right where 'Catching Up With' left off. As did the Cure with 'Galore' following on 'Standing On A Beach'. When Bowie put out his double-disc singles set-- which included all the 'Changes' songs once again-- I was actually annoyed. Now, here's a follow-up bonus question: is "My World Storm," as redone by Rockers Uptown, a single? It seems like the "e-reg" and "sprint" versions of "Cars" do count as singles, so shouldn't we put that one in the line-up? Again, it would be a question of rights to it, but ideally it should be in there. lots of love to all, Ben Iglar-Mobley http://home.earthlink.net/~iglarmobley (proud member of the Boys Like Us) * * * "Did you know you're talking to the heart of the machine?" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Oct 1999 09:41:00 -0400 (EDT) From: TommyBkLyN26@webtv.net (Tommy) Subject: down in the park? Rather, he was saying that people are prepared to worship something on the BASIS of a rumour. In this context, and for the sake of argument, God MIGHT exist, but His worshippers have no evidence... only "rumour".}] Well. I do agree with Mr. Roberts concerning Gary's intentions with the line from Prophecy, and I appreciate the way Matthew stopped just barely short of exclaiming "God does NOT exist, period." I don't think Gary or even Matthew could be that arrogant as to claim to know everything about the entire universe. The same holds true for any believer in God, who could proclaim, "God DOES exist" but simply saying it doesn't MAKE it true, one way or the other. This is where I concur with Matthew (for once!) about what Gary meant (though in my opinion a few thousand years of history amounts to a bit more than just rumour, but we're getting too close to starting another debate). I'd like to point out also that despite all the "rumours" we have concerning extra-terrestrial life (and the lack of hard evidence to support it), millions of people do believe in life elsewhere in the universe, including me. But if we were to apply the "rumour" logic about God to life on other planets, how could we beleive in either one? One last issue on this subject is that in future discussions we shouldn't lump everyone who believes in God into the Christian category. Catholics are Christians, yet not all Christians are Catholic. Jews certainly believe in God. Muslims and Hindus and Buddhists have their own "God" as well, don't they (I'm no great scholar on world religions)? Even Native Americans believed in higher beings, right? I think that for future discussions, we should use the term Believers, or Believers In God (BIG for short?) instead of Christian, unless of course that's what you prefer. Sorry about all that, just thought it should be stated. Continuing with this "Exile" theme, I hope that Gary's next album is a little less dark and forboding. I enjoy Exile very much and the "story" behind the album is very interesting, but personally I'd like to hear something more upbeat and uplifting. I know that's not really Gary's forte, but when i'm listening to other music, such as Van Halen's "Jump" or Joe Satriani's "Summer Song" (for those of you fortunate enough to know Joe's music, i'm sure you'll agree), something about those songs really lifts my spirits. And sadly, there are very few Numan tunes I can honestly say that about. Cars, Airline and When the Machines Rock come immediately to mind as "upbeat" Numan songs. Even Remind Me to Smile and IDYD come close (although lyricly they're kind of dark as well). I'm not saying Gary should record a "Shiny, Happy People" tune. Just maybe lighten up a little. It could just get him another big hit. I'm hoping that the happiness he's experienced from his marriage will encourage him to write some meaningful love songs (as he began to do with Absolution). Was Digest #584 the shortest one ever?
