Well I've been faithfully hunting for some more Numan CDs and tapes, but I must say that, in a large number, they're rather hard to come by on a limited income... I was wondering if anyone out there might have some stuff available for sale ~ used CDs or tapes or anything of the sort. *Anything* would be much appreciated. In regards to recent mentions of the sound quality on Numan's recordings, I feel wuite compelled to add my opinion to the discussion: I actually favor the "low-fi" quality of the recordings to the more heavily produced stuff that's mastered in that pefection-oriented style (as in, NIN style) for the case of Numan, because I think it actually adds a powerful element to the songs themselves... A rawer sound isn't necessarily bad, albeit (sometimes) annoying, it can be greatly refreshing . It actually seems to me that it calls more attantion to the song itself when the sound quality is imperfect. Lastly, I've got the urge to list my ten least favorite / most disappointing albums. here we go... 10. Bush ~ Razorblade Suitcase (they tried too hard that time around) 09. Ministry ~ Pslam 69 (not even worth the three bucks I paid for it) 08. Marilyn Manson ~ Antichrist Superstar (not a big MM fan anyway, but this was a shameful attempt at 'groundbreaking,' and so much less fun that POAAF) 07. MM ~ Mechanical Animals (just when you thought it couldn't get any worse) 06. Catherine Wheel ~ Cats and Dogs (just no good) 05. Santana ~ Supernatural (the modern rock star thing was a good idea, but degraded the legacy of Santana, not to mention, completely screwed the fluidity of their stuff) 04. Limp Bizkit ~ Significant Other (this was just bad and wrong, I didn't even like the first one) 03. Soundtrack to "An American Werewolf In Paris" (sounded soooo much better in the movie) 02. Silverchair ~ Freakshow (another band trying to hard to change their image with the times "we luv KoRn") 01. Spice Girls: SpiceWORLD (this was just all sorts of disappointing) Much Love... ~Maha --- greetings from the carribean amphibian Angelfire for your free web-based e-mail. http://www.angelfire.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Oct 1999 01:38:51 -0700 From: Pythoness Subject: Berserkers To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Gary Numan) >He said there's a >tribe, I can't remember where he said they were. Sounds like he's confusing the Vikings and the Picts. . . The Berserkers were Norse warriors given to total destructive frenzy. The word means "bear-shirt," a warrior clothed in bear's skin (either literally or because they were as fierce as bears; I've heard both explanations. Some say that they took hallucinogenic mushrooms to increase their berserk rage. Was it the Picts or the Celts who were supposed to dye their skin blue with woad and run naked into battle? At any rate, there *is* some disagreement as to just what was meant by "woad," which is the name of a blue dye plant now. I've heard that we really don't know if this legend refers to this plant, to some other plant (maybe a hallucinogenic mushroom!), or to some kind of tattoo. That's all my input on the matter. :-) zg Pestmaster (zigi@ravenland.com) Ziggy's House O' Vermin http://www.ravenland.com/index.htm/index.htm Updates dead in the water! Bee Aye Dee. Bad. What a rip off if ever there was one...another reissue, oh great! And to cap it all off the Radio Heart album has been re-released in the same bad packaging in the same way that got the original vinyl one withdrawn. Big Gary Numan picture on the front and a nice credit to go with it - shame that only three songs on the album feature him. On the plus side, got the new Tori Amos album and there's a real Numan feel to some of the songs. A line in one of the songs is something like "my thoughts are electric" - made me think of I Dream Of Wires! A friend of mine commented on how it would be good for Numan and Amos to do something together, with his music and her vocals - could be interesting!!!! IMO Sacrifice is better than Exile bescause I thought AQoF, L+N, Magic etc were very uplifting where the nearest on Exile id Dead Heaven. The more I listen to Exile the more dirgey I think it is, even though a few of the songs I rate among Gary's best. There was a lot of uplifting stuff in the mid-late 80s as well, like I Don't Believe or Strange Charm for instance. It's obvious how dark and forboding Exile is when I was at the Forum concert a few months ago, and stuff like Cars, AFE, IDYD, Tracks, and the like got the crowd far more excited than anything off Exile. Hopefully I've avoided a flame. :-) James (a proud member of "relieved that the digest's staying!") ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Oct 1999 13:52:07 -0500 (CDT) From: cyberspace buddha Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #585 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu On Thu, 28 Oct 1999 Michael Tressler wrote: > Was Digest #584 the shortest one ever? Damrath" Subject: Insect in his Anal Orafice To: Gary Numan Does this Jeffrey Stoneking character have a bug up his ass, or what? Sounds like he was negotiating business arrangements with someone (Steve Malins, it seems) that claimed to represent someone else (Numan) that he, in fact, did not represent. I failed to see what Gary and Tony Webb needed to apologize for. Did Gary and Tony claim Steve Malins WAS their representative and then rescind? Doesn't sound like it. If someone approached me with overtures of business arrangements regarding a third party whom they actually didn't represent, I could hardly blame the third party. Secondly, why is he posting this drivel to the Numan Digest? Do I care about Gary's behind the scenes business arrangements? Hell no. I like the music. Period. As far as trying to "financially gouge" us with "the abundance of reissues", that's only a problem if we buy the stuff. Some of us didn't get the chance to buy these releases the first time they were released. I personally was waiting for the reissue of Berserker. The ones I don't need (prepare yourself for a major leap of logic here) I DON'T BUY. Imagine that: A real Numan fan that doesn't go all weak in the knees just because another CD is reissued with a slightly different cover and immediately hemorrhage money on the spot. We have brains, Mr. Stoneking, and we are adults. We can manage our checkbooks just fine without your attempts to be the Ralph Nader of the Numan Digest. As for the comments about Gemma. I thought it was kind of amusing that she was such a free spirit in displaying her tattoo, regardless as to whether or not it displayed her "female genitalia". (Are we to take it that Mr. Stoneking is a prude as well as a poor businessman?) I failed to see the issue with that, other than a sad attempt to taunt Gary in a forum Gary doesn't even subscribe to. Taking credit for their automobile accident? Who does he think he is, the I.R.A.? Please stop posting this kind of crap to our Digest. It's sad, sorry, immature and unprofessional to boot. When I finally got a CD player 14 years ago, I set about obtaining all tracks on CD, to replace my well worn vinyl collection. I am now at a point whereas I have all UK released Numan tracks, on CD. I think that pretty much covers all tracks that he has released anywhere. It has meant a certain amount of duplication. I have Telekon, I Assassin, Replicas, Dance, Pleasure Principle, Tubeway Army,Exile and Sacrafice 3 times on CD, as well as a couple of times on either tape or LP. I know plenty of other people who have far greater collections of Numan records/tapes/CD's than I have. It all comes down to what you, as an individual, want from life, and what makes your cookie crumble. Gary has never hidden the fact that the whole point of his involvement in the music industry was to secure fame and financial security for himself. But in doing so, he has, PERSONALLY, provided me with countless hours of enjoyment. However, there is little doubt that this Jeffrey Stoneking charachter would not have been responsible for a single hour of enjoyment on the part of me, or any other Numan fans. We, however, may, had his intentions succeeded, been responsible for his status and luxury/finacial levels increasing. Unfortunately for him, this time he got his fingers burnt. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Oct 1999 21:34:23 -0500 From: "PHILIP JACOBSON" Subject: Jeff Stoneking To: "Gary Numan" >Still, be = >aware that, despite the talents of Gary, which I don't praise as much = >because of it, you and countless others are being deceived and = >financially gouged by the abundance of reissues by one who could care = >less about you or anyone else who has supported him. =20 I, for one, could give a shit about Numan's reissues. I eagerly await the new material. As for being deceived, I really don't see how -- if the CD is there, you can read and have money, I think it's pretty much a personal decision if you wish to buy or not. Just because Gary doesn't put out his material the way we want him to, I don't think it makes him some sort of crook as you imply. As for your business dealings, I have been burned on some things in my day as well... a lesson I've learned is always go to the top before any $$ hits the table. Not too bad----the three short instrumentals are all creepy and atmospheric, and lead song SOUL PROTECTION has some fantastic and catchy verses. Not a bad listen all around. -HateGrape. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Oct 1999 21:41:12 +0100 From: Steve Perryman Subject: Re-issues To: "'Gary Numan Digest'" Hi On the subject of all these re-issues, I would hope that people are being extremely choosy what they buy now. I know I am. Ironically, Gary said that he didn't want to release the recording of the Isolate Tour gig at Hammersmith because he already had too many live CDs out. Of course, what's happened since then is that it has been released over about 6 or 7 CDs interspersed with tracks that everyone already has. A bit poor, but then I'm not too fussed because I didn't buy any of them. Anyway, this latest "Down in the Park - The Alternative Means of Getting Your Hard Earned Cash" compilation seems to be the best source for the Isolate Tour recordings as it's relatively cheap and has at least 6 tracks from the unreleased live album including "Emotion", "The Skin Game", "Time to Die", "Your Fascination", "America", "U Got the Look" and possibly some stuff off "Outland". I'm almost tempted myself, except that the live versions don't really add much to the originals, unless you really must have a version of "Your Fascination" with a Kipper guitar solo on. The "Dream Corrosion" CD was a complete f***ing travesty. It should have been his best live album since "Living Ornaments" what with the excellent selection of songs and the incredible atmosphere at the gig. The sound quality is, frankly, shit. I assumed the video would be as bad, which is why I didn't buy it until I read in this digest that the sound quality was better. Fortunately the video does sound a lot clearer although still a bit dry. The CD just sounds muffled. I don't know what Gary was thinking when he let it go to the NME for review. Funnily enough, they said that it sounded like a bootleg. I think Gary said that somebody else mastered the CD for "Dream Corrosion" while he mastered "Dark Light" himself using a Depeche Mode live CD as reference! Hmm. From the evidence, it seems obvious that he has do= ne a lot for Gary's career in the last few years, both through advice and direct support. That's what we, as Numan fans, should collectively be concerned about. Jeffrey Stoneking apparently has a gripe against Steve (which he has transferred to Gary by proxy). Personally, I don't give a monkeys. As we haven't a clue what the problem is, I would expect none of us do. What I would find laughable, if it wasn't so obnoxious, is the suggestion= that Stoneking caused Gary to be jealous. Ridiculous, obviously, but the point is that Stoneking was TRYING to cause trouble. Whatever you think o= f Gary, from what I know of Gemma, she wouldn't hurt a fly, so why mess wit= h her? The story all sounds deeply hokey to me, particularly as Stoneking can't string a coherent sentence together. However, the sentiment is clearly there. I never cease to be amazed at how morally challenged some people are. Now on a more interesting theme, can anyone remind me the significance of= an eye of Horus at the base of the spine. Anything to do with the Knights= Templar kissing the serpent? ;-) BTW1 Rick in DC - don't worry, there isn't a Change Your Mind CD single. BTW2 Michael - thanks for not flaming me for going off topic :-) I expect= alien life does exist somewhere in our Galaxy of 100 billion suns (not to= mention the other 100 billion galaxies in our Universe!), not because of rumour, but because a lot of cosmologists and biologists can explain why = it probably does (although admittedly, a lot disagree, but always on scientific grounds). VERY different to theology. BTW3 Mike - I shouldn't pay too much attention to anything you hear on Ar= t Bell. Sounds like that "holistic" guy had been eating the mushrooms himself. Berserkers were a mixture of Norse myth and fact - fierce warrio= rs basically, from about 1500 years ago. And then of course, Fred Saberhagen= used the word to depict evil cyborgs in a very poor series of sci-fi pulp= stories (the progenators for Gary's 'Berserker'). Even if this VERY dubio= us Berserker tribe exists today, they certainly weren't the influence for Gary. Sorry!
