That will STILL do nicely... what was the plan for The Plan? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Nov 1999 16:33:48 +0000 From: vickers@netcomuk.co.uk Subject: Academy To: Gary Numan Before people start writing in and complaining about the lights, the venue, the set list, the sound, and everything else, let me tell you that the gig on Saturday, at the Academy in Manchester, was FUN. I really enjoyed myself (so what? you may say, you always do.). And, as far as I could tell everyone else was really enjoying it too. According to the Darkzone website, the capacity of the hall is 1800, and I imagine all the tickets went. Certainly the ticket touts were doing their best to buy up spare ones..... The support band were already playing when I finally got in, and I never found out their name. They were either Man(i)kin, or (i), and Man(i)kin is their album, or something else, and (i) is their symbol. There were four of them, and they were quite interesting. There were two fellows at the sides beating pads quite ferociously, such as Gary had on the Berserker tour. They were doing quite rapid and entertaining rythyms, and there was some kind of drum machine running as well. The one on the left looked Emperor Hirohito would have looked with a string vest and a tattoo. There was a keyboard player at the back, and a chap singing at the front. The songs were not memorable - not on one hearing, anyway - and the chap’s style was rather unbending. But they were interesting to me, because of the rythyms. Gary came on at 9.08, and we were treated to: 1 Films 2 Me, I Disconnect From You 3 Dominion Day - Gary on guitar, usual problem with this one, the notes are too low for Gary to get the verses across 4 Voix 5 Remind Me To Smile 6 Metal 7 Noise Noise 8 I Dream Of Wires - you could hear the crowd singing really loud 9 Down In The Park 10 Dark - Gary on guitar again 11 Cars 12 Seed Of A Lie 13 Remember I Was Vapour 14 Friends - three guitars at front - flashing lights in our faces led to seeing blue vertical bars everywhere 15 Angel Wars 16 Are “Friends” Electric? crowd baying for more...... First Encore: 17 A Question of Faith 18 We Are Glass crowd going bananas..... Second Encore: Gary asks us to remember Paul Gardiner....... Introduces current band 19 That’s Too Bad - Ade up front, Gary on guitar. Up until now Ade and Richard have been lost in oblivion at the back 20 I Die You Die crowd still howling for more. They tease us for a good five minutes until they start playing Neil Diamond or something. (Someone will remind me what it actually was). Gary talks to the fans afterwards, but dependable family people like me are already trying to find the way OUT of Manchester....... I don’t care if I get flamed (I do, really, but I’m pretending I don’t) - IT WAS A GREAT NIGHT OUT, and I didn’t even get clamped! Proud member of Fans Like Us ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Nov 1999 9:27:40 +0100 (BST) From: "Jon Garland" Subject: Academy disappointment To: numan@cs.uwp.edu On the way to the gig, my mate Leon & I were talking about what we wanted from the show. Basically, we decided that we wanted a few new songs, a revamped set-list that showed a bit of imagination, and no bleedin' Cars & AFE. And what did we get? No new songs, all the same predictable golden oldies (Films/Friends/We Are Glass/Metal/Voix etc etc yawn) and the seemingly obligatory Cars & AFE. Dedicating 'That's Too Bad' to Paul Gardiner was a nice touch, as was the night's one surprise, an outing for 'Remember I was Vapour'. Other than that, I have to say I felt very let down by the predicability of it all. All in all, I thought the gig fell a bit flat. It reminded me of the show at Manchester Apollo on the Exile tour, which was also dull with a rather miserable crowd. It's grim up North, eh? While it certainly seems the original fan project attempted by Klaus Sauer is dead and buried, seeing as Klaus went very quiet some time ago (gee Klaus, you know, you could have told us WHY at least!) - and I don't wish to have a go at Jim Collins in any way - BUT! There is ALREADY a web based project under way by a guy who inhabits the AFE website's message board, calling himself Morpheus . He's setting up a stand alone website where fan covers of Numan songs will be downloadable in MP3 format - available to all at no charge. All he's asking is people to send him the damn things in the first place; he's making the web space available, he's doing the design and putting the files up there. Some people are interested in covers, some aren't - but for those who ARE, wouldn't you rather just d/l the ones you want off a website than pay for a CD? Seems rather cool to have 1 site on the Numan Network devoted to fan covers, don'tcha think??? Those who have Numan covers they'd like to be accessible to a wider audience, just send them to the guy - his email address is:- brapped@usa.net At the very least, it might mean a greater number of tracks available, no cost, and it'll probably be available a lot quicker than getting all the legal problems sorted for a commercially available CD. Come on people, let's get this one moving - no profiteering, no costs involved, no legal hassle, lets just do it because we can. "I never really sat down and consciously said, 'I'm going to take X, Y and Z, and then add this to it,' but that's what I did," he admits. So what were X, Y and Z?... "[I]t was the bleakness of the Cure, the coldness of Depeche Mode when they were at their best, or like 'Telekon' by Gary Numan. I still listen to that record, I mean, it's fucking great. Because it's just cold-sounding. I still remember as a kid when I discovered 'Pleasure Principle.' Sometimes it was just comical. I didn't take it seriously, but it scared me at one point. It painted an emotional place that wasn't pleasant to be at. It seemed creepy, science fiction in an unpleasant way." "Fucking great." Couldn't agree more. The article also includes a side-bar titled "For Further Listening..." that lists Nine Inch Nails' albums and Trent's side projects and also his influences that he mentions. Right alongside The Beatles and Bowie and 1000 Homo DJs and Pigface is Gary, with plugs for 'The Pleasure Principle' and 'Telekon.' I think I'll just let all that speak for itself. love to all, and lots of love to Trent, Benjamin Iglar-Mobley http://home.earthlink.net/~iglarmobley (proud member of the Boys Like Us) * * * "Still you lead me and I follow... "Now, I really don't want to get into a religious debate" I'm sure you don't. I do, but not here because I get told off..... but th= e implication of this first quote pisses me off SO much. For any new members, or anyone left in any doubt, GARY IS AN ATHEIST (and= not an "aetheist" - is that someone who loves the beauty of atheism???). He is NOT a secret christian. He is NOT about to come out of the closet a= nd announce he has discovered God. "God" is important to people who believe in "Him". To atheists (in the commonly accepted sense), "He" is a pointless waste of time. It is the IDEA of a god that is important to anyone who is amused by huma= n psychology or who enjoys philosophical questions, anyone who questions th= e source of so much pain and suffering in the world, anyone who objects abo= ut the systematic brainwashing of the most vulnerable people in society. This interest, even fascination, with the IDEA of god does NOT make them believers. There is no reason to think that it does, but I can see why christians would wish to pretend it does. Lots of Telekon but seemingly little Exile & Sacrifice. So nice to hear Paul G still remembered. Should there have been a third encore? Should it have been Jo The Waiter? I think so. Never mind. He sounded great & looked even better. Into the millenium then......... My name is Lisa and I just joined the Numan list today. I'm 28 and I've been a Gary Numan fan since I first heard Cars back in the early 80's. I didn't start collecting on Gary until I was in college and a friend of mine taped The Pleasure Principle for me. I still haven't seen Gary Numan live (since I live in the middle of the US) but I did have the good fortune of meeting Gary when I was at the Bauhaus concert at Brixton Academy in London last November. He was so gracious and friendly and happily signed my Bauhaus ticket stub since it was the only thing I had one me for him to sign. I sure had fun that night, watching Bauhaus onstage then turning back to take a look at Gary watching the proceedings. A great night. My other favorite artists are Japan, Roxy Music, Adam Ant, The Rolling Stones, Duran Duran, Blondie, The Police, T. Rex, NY Dolls, Hanoi Rocks, David Bowie, etc. I'm reading Gary's autobiography right now and all I can say is that I'm so glad he's finally gotten the public recognition that he's always deserved - it's infuriating to read about how needlessly cruel and petty so many journalists and other artists (Bowie especially) were to Gary all those years. I'm really interested in trading video with anyone who has NTSC Numan stuff to trade. I'm also still looking for a good quality copy of The Touring Principle video. Good to be here! Lisa In this message, please let us know who you are, who some of your favorite artists are, how long you have listened to Gary Numan. Let us know if you play any instruments or anything else that might come to mind. >> ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Nov 1999 20:31:39 EST From: "jon glass" Subject: numan t-shirt To: numan@cs.uwp.edu hey! does anyone possibly have any numan shirts they want to sell? if so gimme some mail. im looking especially for the one thats got the exile half gary face and the pic is chopped up and the print is mostly silver. thanks lots of lovin like clocklaw, jon glass "these boys of pleasure are only faggots" ;p go to my bands page, you'll love us: http://leosoperation.homepage.com ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Nov 1999 13:08:36 MSK From: "Neil A. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu A few digests ago, a few of us started chatting about how Amex were using Gary's "CARS" for their lastest Blue Card, campaign in the States. Then it was mentioned that the name on the advert test card was G A Webb. Steve Webbon said: "I'm impressed - there's someone at the ad agency with sly knowledge and a sense of humor!!" Then, in the last digest, 'Bill Powers' said: "The Webb name has been used on the cards in the commercials for years. It is merely a coincidence." We all realised it was highly likely that this was coincidence Bill. But it is also likely that it isn't coincidence. As I said a few d's ago... the name on the card is actually, L A Webb, not G A Webb. So - if you reckon that L A Webb has been used for years, maybe it stems back from when Gary was living in 'L A'. When he was indeed "L A - Webb". Anyway at the end of the day, if Amex are using Cars then someone must like him up there! To: The Gary Digest Dear numanoids, Does anyone know what the following description from the NuWorld site means? > The Plan (£8.50) > > The 15 songs originally recorded in March > 1978 remained on Beggars Banquet's vault > for six and a half years, finally emerging as > The Plan in autumn 1984. Not only were the > tracks sequenced in the running order that > Numan originally intended but the album > took on a life of its own by leaping into the > UK charts at Number 29. Now, on my vinyl copy of the album, it has 12, not 15 tracks. I'm assuming the "15" meant here are these: Bombers (Original Version) My Shadow In Vain (Original Version) This Machine (Original Version) Thoughts No2 Something's In The House (Original Version) Check It The Monday Troop This Is My Life Mean Street Ice Crime Of Passion The Life Machine (Original Version) Critics Do Your Best (Original Version) Basic J ...leaving out the "That's Too Bad" and "Bombers" singles and their b-sides which are included as bonus tracks on the disc. Specifically, I'm wondering about that phrase: "tracks sequenced in the running order that Numan originally intended." The vinyl album has "The Monday Troop," "Crime Of Passion," and "The Life Machine (Original Version)" left off, and the songs are in a completely different order. I actually prefer the order they appear on the vinyl, and it bugs me the way "The Machine" gets cut off at the end on the cd, instead of fading out as it does on the vinyl. So which version is the one ordered the way Gary intended: the vinyl or the disc? It's a detail question, I know, but what order the songs appear affects how we hear them. It's part of the art, and I just want to know the "official" format, how Gary imagined it. love, Benjamin Iglar-Mobley http://home.earthlink.net/~iglarmobley * * * "You can change your colours I'll just change my point of view." ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ****************************** _______________________________________________________________________ _____ ____ ____ _____ _____ / \ | | / \ / \ / \ / \ | |-----| |-----| | |-----| |-----| | | | G | | A | | | R | | Y | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |-----| |-----| | |-----| |-----| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | N | E | W | S |=====| | | | | | | | & | | | | | | | \_____/ I | N | F | O | | | | is produced and distributed by Derek Langsford dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu -------------------------------------------------------------------------- To reply to the messages in this list, mail to: numan@cs.uwp.edu If you want to be removed, or someone wants to be added, you can mail to numan-request@cs.uwp.edu ----------------- The Gary Numan Digest is brought to you via Datta Production and Development, 905 97th Street, Kenosha, WI 53143 USA datta@cs.uwp.edu and computer resources courtesy of University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Datta Production and Development.
