To: "You are one stupid, stupid man." "shit-for-brains." "zipperhead." Glad to see you used your so superior intellect to steer clear of personal insult. Valerium/Valeriun/Valerian, all used as aliases by Gary Anthony James Webb. I use Valerium. Thought you would have spotted that by now. Just in case its not clear spell it with me now. V.A.L.E.R.I.U.M. Try to make up a phonetic. That should help you remember. As to your sarcasm, it was kinda obvious since you asterisked the I`s for emphasis. My personal preference involves increased sagacity. (Hey, just found that one in the dictionary- The paper version- not sure how to use this internet thingy yet) You then wrote "Well, you weren't really misconstruing anything. Your wish of goodwill was anything *BUT* that, although you've insisted that *I* misconstrued. It was a hateful piece of text and you got the reply you deserved." OK, I now need a vote from our fellow digestive. Here follows a copy of the original mail I sent to Joey 13th Oct 1999 >Hey Joey, > >Just a short massage to find out how your house moving went. Its such a stressful time. Hope it all went smoothly. Did you ever get your Switch solution for your Network? Did you go with the Baystack Model? > >Anyways, hope you are well and all is kewl. > >Alan This message is only full of goodwill - Vote Yes This message has anything *BUT* goodwill - Vote No I remember I once called you egotistical. I remember you denying it in unmitigated fashion. I remember retracting it after it was conceded I did not know you and may have misconstrued. Then you hit us with: "While this is not a popularity contest, I'd be willing to bet that my postings here generate more email (and more in-Digest replies) than yours do. Thus, your statement that "nobody" gives a toss about what I write is completely absurd on the face of it." Nah nah na na nah I`m more popular than you are. Sad. Very sad. I will not stoop to personal insults and would strongly advise you to stoop no more in my direction. This opponent is val as in Valerium not val as in valetudinarian. Clarity is required in this ANON thing. I have been using valerium for many years. When I joined this digest, I introduced myself as Alan Stewart, from Kilmarnock in Scotland, so most people know who I am. Most of the UBB people know me as do the regular chatters on a Sunday night. So, the people I am anonymous to are those who do not know me. Joey Lindstrom means as much as Valerium to people who do not know you. Valerium is a nickname. Joey could also be yours. I do not know otherwise and neither does anyone who does not know you. "I'll bet you'd have loved to have been a part of the riots at Seattle or Euston Station, too... it would seem to fit your worldview." This kind of statement gets me much more annoyed that the pathetic name calling above. You know nothing of me and never will. You wildly assume you know my worldview. This is truly the most pathetic statement you have ever made to me. There have been some stormers but that takes the biscuit. Now it would appear that the dog shit once again needs cleaning up. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Dec 1999 19:25:48 -0000 From: "Tracy Joyner" Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #598 To: "Gary Numan" Hi TJ here, I would just like to say thanks for all the welcome notes I got when joining the digest, Thanks Guys as I have not been to well but on the mend now and look forward to communicating with you all. well just a bit about myself doing H.N.C.Communications at Motherwell College (Scotland) very interesting i must say, although it may sound boring to you lot *g* . I don't have a great collection of Numan stuff but it does me. Anyway talk to you all again soon TJ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Dec 1999 12:12:38 -0500 From: Matthew Roberts Subject: Intelligent Criticism To: Gary Numan As usual, I'm behind with the Digest, so here goes... "if you totally remove the criticism from an artist, however talented, an= artist stops putting effort into his work. remember, this is the same attitude that led david bowie to release tin machine albums." If I can just add my two cents worth.... Naturally, constructive criticis= m in the right place at the right time can be a good thing and should not b= e automatically dismissed. However, most of the "criticism" in the Numan Digest comes from, er... people I would not describe as geniuses. = Before I offend everyone, I should say that there has been some telling a= nd intelligent criticism here. Unfortunately though, much of it is mindless shit. Therefore, I'm happy to point out that the above Bowie reference wa= s used in an entirely inappropriate context. One of the main reasons that Bowie made 2 Tin Machine albums (which aren'= t ALL that bad - how many people have actually heard them???) was because h= e was stung by the near universal criticism of his mid-80's output (which I= MO was worse than Tin Machine). So in fact, the reference actually counters the point the writer was trying to make. I think a couple of Bowie quotes confirm my point nicely. And I paraphrase:- "You should have heard some of the Tonight demos..." (refering to the over-production of Let's Dance. Tonight & NLMD) "Joe (actually Zowie, his then teenage son) heard some of the Tin Machine= demos and said 'That's more like it Dad' " (refering to his own perceived= 'return to form') So criticise as much as you like, but will you get a new Telekon or a new= Machine & Soul? Joey, I should clearly give Heinlein another chance but Edward Gibbon and= Marcel Proust are sitting on my book shelf and they're not happy... I hope we agree on who should get welfare, but the system, the system....= "a valid excuse"? - and here's the crux. Is, for example, living in a slu= m with it's attendant disadvantages a 'valid excuse'? I don't know, but I d= o passionately believe that slums don't need to exist and that Globalism is= a major cause of them. I'm hardly surprised to hear a Democrat trumpeting capitalism. A shame yo= u couldn't find any communists/socialists prepared to say how great it is, = or perhaps a Nicaraguan street urchin :-) Incidentally, I would appreciate a pointer towards a good 'free market/capitalism' site. All the ones I have found have been distinctly potty, whereas socialism sites tend to be more thoughtful. ABSOLUTELY no criticism intended - I can think of plenty of possible reasons for this without putting capitalists down. Eliot Gould was the host, and introuduced Gary (before the second number) via que cards to accomadate Gary's mysterious image at the time!!!! My friend Pete taped almost every band who appeared on SNL from l977 (When he was one of the lucky few who had a betamax player) up till around l983. He taped me the Numan appearance years ago, and the copy is sadly hard to see. I agree with the post on last week's digest that we should petition Comedy central to repeat it---even though recently they have only been showing SNL repeats from the last 9 years or so. If you are THAT desperate to see this, email me and maybe I can get Pete to try and made a beter beta-to-VHS copy of this appearance. Gary played synths for both songs by the way. -Nick ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Dec 1999 11:18:18 +1100 From: dpipe@ords.com.au Subject: Numan on Saturday Night Live To: According to http://www.saturday-night-live.com/snl/guest-1.html, Gary Numan appeared on SNL on 16 February 1980 (along with Elliot Gould - what an interesting dressing room conversation THAT must have been). I've seen it twice - once when originally aired, and once on the Comedy Central re-runs. I've always thought it was one of Gary's best performances. Wish I had it on tape...I wonder if there is some source for purchasing old SNL episodes on video? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Dec 1999 13:51:04 -0000 From: "NumanBoy" Subject: Numan on SNL To: "Gary Numan Digest" >From Jon Glass: >btw: does anyone know if numan was on saturday night live, if so what year & >what songs? Numan was on SNL in 1979 and I am lucky enough to have a copy of it. I have been a faithful fan of SNL for 22 years, but I HAVE NEVER seen that episode broadcast. He did perform "Cars" and "Praying To The Aliens". Both performances are incredibly unique. And he was visibly nervous as shite. It is THE best version of Cars ever. Gary Had like 4 mono synths and he just went wild tweaking the knobs and adding all kinds of blips and beeps. On Praying to The Aliens, they showed the lyrics on the screen like those old "follow the bouncing ball" cartoons. Imagine what Mr & Mrs Average American viewer must have thought of Gary when then they saw/hear a lyric like "...now only boys who love only boys..." !! Sorry I don't have the equipment to make dubs, but look for it in RealVideo at the NumanBoy site http://www.numanboy.com someday. Cheers! David a.k.a. As much as Gary tries to sound like just another punker, his lyrics (and vocals) give him away. I find it fascinating that a "real Gary Numan song" is hidden away in "That's Too Bad". And for what it's worth, I recently purchased "Metal Rhythm" and "Outland" and was very impressed with "Metal Rhythm" (a little less so with "Outland"). I'm not sure why "Metal Rhythm" is often dismissed as "his late 80s stuff". To me, it's the album "Strange Charm" tried to be, but just didn't. His vocals are very strong (the best since "Dance" in my opinion) and the use of the female backing vocals is more interesting and varied (e.g., "Devious") than the more straightforward presentation on "Strange Charm" and "The Fury". Anyway, for someone who is filling in the gaps between "Beserker" and "Exile", "Metal Rhythm" was a very pleasant surprise! -Mark "I was a shadow but God forgives Now I'm a priest and Jesus lives" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Dec 1999 16:40:28 +0100 From: "Marine Service Shipping" Subject: RE : Gary Numan To: This is a multi-part message in MIME format. IMO from reading Tony's comments and the ones here, there should be two digests. Have the one here and a new one the Bitch at Gary Numan Digest, send e-mail to bitchatnuman@cs.uwp.edu (or whatever the new address will be). I've only been to two shows and I didn't hear every word clearly or every note, but I went to have a good time and did. And when he tours the US, I'll go out again. But Tony raised a point about how all this negative talk can shun away new fans, and I really see that here. I've been part of this Digest since 1993 or so (whoever archives the Digests can check). Way back then it was mostly Derek, Kay Teel, or Brian Hammond spreading this bit and that bit about Gary and his career. I don't recall it being hostile, although most of the people appeared to dislike Machine and Soul. Then after a few years Derek somehow got Gary to participate in the Digesst, which was a really cool addition. I graduated and was without e-mail for while, and then I came back and the Q&A session was gone. Today it seems like on this Digest it's usually 50/50 good/bitch material. I don't believe in censoring free speech but perhaps there can be an alternative forum for the criticisms, and use this one for information getting etc. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ****************************** _______________________________________________________________________ _____ ____ ____ _____ _____ / \ | | / \ / \ / \ / \ | |-----| |-----| | |-----| |-----| | | | G | | A | | | R | | Y | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |-----| |-----| | |-----| |-----| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | N | E | W | S |=====| | | | | | | | & | | | | | | | \_____/ I | N | F | O | | | | is produced and distributed by Derek Langsford dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu -------------------------------------------------------------------------- To reply to the messages in this list, mail to: numan@cs.uwp.edu If you want to be removed, or someone wants to be added, you can mail to numan-request@cs.uwp.edu ----------------- The Gary Numan Digest is brought to you via Datta Production and Development, 905 97th Street, Kenosha, WI 53143 USA datta@cs.uwp.edu and computer resources courtesy of University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Datta Production and Development.
