To: boyslikeus Hello. I have been thinking about this for a long time. I have read many interviews with famous people who as policy do not read their reviews. They say it is too much to take, both the negative and the positive ones, as there is temptation to believe either of them. I think we forget that the basic premise of critics is to criticize. Another basic statement is that the society we live in is basically fear based and very negative. It is extremely difficult to not be negative, we have had years and years of simple acceptance that this is the way things are and things are bad. "Life's a bitch and then you die." My personal challenge for the last several years has been deprogramming myself from the mind set of fear and negativity. It is *extremely* difficult. It is hard to overcome 35 years of negative programming, hard to find others who are also trying to be positive, hard not to slip back into default mode. This is one reason why I refuse to watch tv news. (Bad news all around.) One thing that I have to remind myself of on a daily basis is that 90% of what other people say is about them. Even if they are talking about you or somebody else, they are really talking about themselves and how it affects them and what they feel about themselves (fag bashers is a good example here). People respond to what affects them in other people. You can learn so much just by listening to what people say, sometimes it is embarrassing. Gary has always listened to his critics. I'm sure Ben can find many examples of his early lyrics addressing his critics, but one of my favorite Numan songs I Die You Die discusses how his fans and critics ravage him. I believe that, especially in his middle years, the critics destroyed his work and, because Gary listened to them, put the downward spiral into further negative motion. This resulted in the (what I call horrid years) of Strange Charm, Machine and Soul and the whole IRS experience, where he admitteldy had no self confidence and therefore no creative force. He had someone else do the M+ S album because he couldn't do it. In Praying to the Aliens, Gary talks about his experiences here in LA with IRS etc, and the entire part is negative after negative. Throughout this, Gary's attitude is one of being the victim. Perhaps through his entire career he plays the victim (it is always somebody else's fault, somebody screwed up (but not him), etc). Perhaps he has a negative attitude towards life (perhaps??!!) and therefore, although maybe only subconsciously, feeds on this negativity. As light begats light, darkness begats darkness. I think he feels his music is dark and therefore he must be dark (although which came first). Or maybe he has lived in the dark so long that's all he can see. I find his diatribes against religion to be very sad. People ask "How can a God let people starve". Well, God doesn't let people starve, people let people starve. God doesn't pull the trigger on a gun, people do. If he's not religious why does he address it so much. On a deeper level, his dissatisfaction with God is a dissatisfaction in himself. I have said a few times that, despite the fact that I love Gary's music (some of it more than others) we as people would never be friends. I was disappointed when I realized this (during the reading of Praying to the Aliens, which is the first time I really thought about it). Working peripherally with him (ie NOT) on the Cleopatra reissues I unfortunately confirmed this. My feeling about them Cleo albums is that he decided they were going to be crap and would not give me any help or input, so, especially in comparison with the Beggars Banquet or the EMI reissues, they are. This whole business of him telling his fans to go away and stop bothering him is both childish and ludicrous, and I feel sorry for him. The situation reminds me of Michael Jackson, who depresses me to no end, because he never had a childhood yet never grew up. One time I had opportunity to read something that he had written (by hand as a 30 year old) and it was pathetically childish and immature, and bordering on illiterate. It was highly disturbing but gave great insight into his personality. Also seeing his interview with then wife Lisa Marie Presley, where he was acting like a ten year old on national television, making bunny ears behind her as she spoke etc, only made the situation more tragic. Perhaps Gary has lived a similar circumstance, to a lesser degree. He has been a STAR since he was 19 years old (three number one albums in a row) and has not ever stopped being one (in his day to day life). I know I did a lot of growing after that point, especially in my late 20's. If Gary has been handed everything and lived in a fantasy rock star world all his life maybe he has no foundation for healthy boundaries, ones that would make him realize that criticism is a) not real and b) not really about him (as a person). A healthy 40 year old individual does not have his dad write a 10 page letter defending him. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu 1. Numanboy: I've built a duping studio @ home, and can make copies of that SNL show if you'd be kind enough to send it my way. I'll return the original to you toute suite. References available; I've traded with a bunch of folks on this list. Also, I know of a guy who collects SNL's on tape. Here's a snippet of dialogue: > I am looking for the 1979 or 1980 SNL episode, where Elliott Gould hosts, and > Gary Numan is the musical guest. Can you help? That's one of the few I'm missing from that year. However, I think classic snl will show this one in the beginning of January. They seem to be going in order again. > That's excellent news, thanks. "Classic SNL"? They don't have their own > channel, do they? Or is this something that's on the Comedy Channel? No, the comedy channels usually edit them down. Check and see if you're NBC affiliate airs them at 3 am. (est. time) Some markets don't air classic snl. So, if you don't get it, tell me and I'd be glad to tape it for you. So! If any of you get this "Classic SNL" on NBC, sounds like an opportunity for taping is coming soon. 2. Wish there was some sort of "base" where one could go to receive the definitive copy of the same old tapes that have been circulating for years. I have so-so copies of those old tv interviews, Whistle Test appearances, etc etc ... but no idea how far from the master they are. Who has GOOD copies of this stuff? A perfect example: The "Metal" video. Anyone have a decent, uninterrupted copy of that? 3. Traders can visit my list of stuff at: http://homestead.com/steelhanky/index.html . To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello Numanoids Of The World! Jim "The Machman" Napier here thinking about starting the Christmas shopping. Ya know, hundreds of Numanoids have asked me how it came to be that I was given the moniker, "The Machman". I think it can be best sussed into a David Letterman Top 10 List: Top 10 Reasons I decided to become The Machman 10. Participating Burger Kings offer 10% off to Machmen 9. Weird, uneasy look from passersby at the bus stop when you tell them you are The Machman 8. Does Jim "The Machman" Napier not have a certain ring to it? 6. Hoping to secure spokesman gig for new Gillette Mach 3 Razors 5. Embarrassingly short name needed some beefing up for the driver's license 4. Bettered my chances of becoming delivery driver for take-out restaurant The Wok Man 3. At the start of NAGNFC back in 1989, I knew I would need catchy internet name in 10 years time. 2. Much better than my old nickname: Uninspired And Without Direction Man And the number one reason I took on the name "The Machman": 1. To bring fun Numanoids together to share news, good times, USA Numan Discos and safe haven in a world that just doesn't understand us. Keep an eye out for the January update when I get jiggy with more realaudio updates, more pictures, a new section called Meet Your Member and a historic MP3 of a NAGNFC plug on the Noise Noise audio fanzine way back in 1990. And to prove Michael Jackson (who is playing Edgar Allen Poe in a new movie) and Gary Numan are soul brothers, here is an actual quote from Edgar himself: "EVERYDAY I DIE, and everyday i live sometimes you must SACRIFICE to solve the puzzle within quote the raven evermore" Gives ya the shudders, doesn't it? Just joined the list and thought I'd say Hello. I've been a fan of Numan's for quite a few years now and have always enjoyed his original and creative way of work, from his visual image to his music. I don't have any particular favourite album (they're all good) but I do have a soft spot for Berserker (you're all probably cringing at this!) However, I feel that Gary is probably at his best at the moment - Exile is an incredible piece of work. My only complaint is that the song Cars is being milked too much. Whenever he's on TV hear in the UK or on the radio, Cars is the track which is usually played. I know this track is an important piece of Numan's music (and one that the public know him for) but it would be nice to see him doing something else instead - there's loads to choose from. Saying that, any Numan is better than no Numan. That's about it. Hope to hear from some Numanoids soon. To: (null) Hi, just wanted to say thanks to all of the people who have e-mailed me. I love the Numan Digest, it's been very informative. I have just started to venture out amongst the vast Numan universe, and am finding it very exciting. I don't get out of my home state very often, but I hope to see Gary Numan in concert sometime. I have a question to ask and please don't think to poorly of me by asking it. Are most of his CD's available in the states? All we have in my home city are the big chain stores and two little stores, that unless you are buddies with the owners, you have to bribe them to get anything ordered. If there is any place that you could recommend, as far as mail order I would really appreciate it. Just to let you know that I am fairly new to the net and have a little bit of fear as far as buying stuff over the net.
