This digest > is SOLELY for Numan-related topics. Well, that saved me from saying it...Riana was right - things are getting deadly dull in here lately. I've been subscribing since 1995, and only recently have I been skimming posts - any mention of the "God" topic, homophobia...important issues, but not why most of us subscribe to this particular list. What with those AND others getting involved in personal slanging matches here rather than taking it off the Digest, PLUS people who can't read the Digest guidelines and send attachments or don't send their emails as plain text... Just have some commonsense for goodness' sake. > And now, just for a change, a Numan-related question: > .....I am, of course, talking about the live cover of "On Broadway". Great > version, but in God's name (whoops) WHY??? I seem to remember GN saying back then that it was a song he'd always liked - that's it. A bizaare choice certainly - I wish I'd been there at the 79 tour when THAT came on for the first time... :-) > And was it ever released as a studio recording? Nope....although to get even more "oh god, I've eaten too many magic mushrooms"....he performed an updated version of the same song with "70s- singer-turned-nice-family-entertainer" Leo Sayer on his "Leo" show in 1984 - just before Berzerker came out. Song performed by both of them hamming it up as a couple of "street bums". Better than the 79 version, I reckon - a kind of "Warriors-period-heading-towards-Berzerker" sound. Gazza then mimed to an earlier version of This Is New Love" ably assisted by his band at the time and Tik'n'Tok. Coo, the useless information still swimming around up there... I have finished recording 10 songs, 6 of which are totally produced and ready to go. I will work on prduction and mixing tonight in the studio of the other 4 songs. 1 or 2 more songs are in the making, which would give the CD 12 songs total. The track listing is as follows (so far): Joe The Waiter, Down In The Park, Cars, Cars (Jazz Instrumental), A Question Of Faith, You Are In My Vision, Stories, Dominion Day, I Dream Of Wires and I Still Remember. I am currently working on Metal. I am not sure which will be the last song. If you have any suggestions, please E-Mail me. The CD should be done and ready for release sometime in February. I have also been working with a fellow by the name of Jason Gearin who has been shooting a great deal of footage in the studio, on the road, in cemetaries, etc. We have created a sort of "rockumentary" if you will. The video will also go into production soon, with music from the CD and a few songs that will not appear on the CD. I will have these both available in February. Gary himself is getting the first copy of each. God bless, enjoy the holidays and talk to you soon. Happy New Year and all that jazz..... or Numan, as you would prefer. Last night I was watching a "reveiw of the year" - youknow, one of those progs the schedulers put on when they're really stuck for decent programmes between Chrim and New Year. Well, eventually, it (the reveiw prog) got around to politics and highlighted John "Two Jags" Prescott's "transport" policies and guess what was playing in the background - CARS!! Of course, we'll never know if the programme makers used it simply as a, dare I say it, cliched cop-out tune to use, or because they recognised the delightful irony in using it. (Johnny Prescott wants us all to use public transport more and leave our cars at home, but he still prefers to use his two Jaguars!!) I don't really care for the politics of it all - it was just great to hear Numan on tv!! So then I dug out my video tape of "Hunting Venus" and had to watch that again... great TV film!! Lots of Numan in it.... This is not meant as a direct plug but if anyone wants to join me for a Numan natter, I'm found most evenings at around 21:00 hours BST in #gossip at www.gbchat.com Best Wishes Here's wishing you everything in Y2K that you would wish for yourself. The Metal video was recorded at Battersea Power Station and shows Gary performing to Metal where electricity is shot through him etc. etc. It's a great Video and I have a copy where the quality isn't exceptional but it works. It's almost as good as the Praying to the Aliens Video off the old grey whistle test or the Saturday night live video where he does Cars etc. etc. Regards Dom ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Dec 1999 13:51:47 -0000 From: "Antonio" Subject: Happy Nu Year To: "maggie dunne" , Quick note to al of you on new years eve - whether it's the milennium or not doessn't matter (nor does it matter how to spell milennium) - just get wrecked and have a fab time tonight :) Things should be back to normal for me tomorrowish, well, apart from the hangover I am planning and stuff :} - so expect individual mails from me with full holiday reports and whatnot. personal stuff - Poppy - thank you for the eddie izzard interview and the beautiful card Califia - be online when I am sooooon Katie - are you home yet? To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi everyone, Starting Jan. 1 and lasting for the next four months, MTV 2 in the US is running every music video they have in alphabetical order by song title. I'd like to get as many of Numan's videos on tape as I can, but I can't find a list of his videos. Does anyone have a list they could send to me? If you don't have a list but remember seeing some of his videos on TV, could you e-mail me their names? I'm making a huge list of all the videos I'm going to try to catch by lots of different artists, and will add every Numan video I know about to the list. I would really appreciate it if anyone could help me out, and if I manage to get any of them, I'd be happy to make copies for people. Thanks, and happy new year to everyone. -- Jason Borchers jasonmb@calweb.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Dec 1999 10:18:38 +0000 From: Emperor Subject: Metal video To: iiaann7@hotmail.com In message , iiaann 7 writes >A few digests ago "Andy B" wrote > >>Can someone please explain what/where/who/how/when >>is the 'Metal' video. >>I've seen it mentioned a few times in this list... > > >Andy >I'm not sure what Metal video has been mentioned before >but I can remember that Gary did a video for the song 'Metal' >for a Tyne Tees program called 'Razamataz'. >Must have been around 1979-1980. >I can remember on one of the scenes where Gary was standing >between 2 electric pylons and the electricity was going from >one pylon to the other through Gary's head. >Can anyone remember this. >The video must have been done specially for the Razamataz >program as that was the only time I saw it, and unfortunately >we didn't have a VCR back in 1979 so I couldn't tape it. >Did anyone tape it ??? > >Cheers >iiaann7 > >______________________________________________________ >Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com > -- I think you`re getting very confused...Razmattaz wasn`t around in 1979/80. Great version, but in God's name (whoops) WHY??? Anybody have any insights on this burning question? Huh? Anybody? And was it ever released as a studio recording? ------------------------------------------------------------------- I have no idea 'why' - but he obviously liked it because (as mentioned a few Digests back) he did it AGAIN with Leo SAYER on a tv show - I can point you to an MP3 of it if you like! Andy (PS Thanks to iiaann7 for the Metal video info) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Jan 2000 13:15:02 -0500 From: Matthew Roberts Subject: On Broadway To: Gary Numan TikTokMan asked - why On Broadway? I don't think Gary's a big Drifters fan although it's a bit of a standard= so he could have heard it anywhere. My guess is that he picked it up from Aladdin Sane. Bowie sings a couple = of lines of 'On Broadway' at the end of the title track, and Gary certainly owned the Aladdin Sane album. In fact, I would also guess that it was at least indirect inspiration for: "Sing a chorus of 'On Broadway' and deny it all" from You Are In My Visio= n. We're told the only proper studio version was the one Gary did with Leo Sayer (!) in 1984 for his TV show. It did actually appear on one of the Images albums, but of course, the sound quality was pretty ropey. So why did he do it in 1979? Well, if Bowie did it, Gary may have thought= it was pretty cool, since he was a big fan. There's other factors though.= Gary had a limited repertoire at the time, so maybe he thought he needed = a cover version to pad out the set. The choice of On Broadway may have been= a way of saying "Hey folks, this is just cabaret, not high art", or "There'= s more to me than sci-fi electronica". But then, that could all be complete bollocks. Whatever the case, I'm sur= e it wasn't ENTIRELY serious. Great > version, but in God's name (whoops) WHY??? I have absolutely no logical answer. The drum line meshes (almost identical, if I remember correctly) with "Remember I Was Vapour" on the re-issue/CD of The_Pleasure_Principle I have. It could have been one of those strange moments where an artist decides to throw a curve ball at the audience (like The Sisters of Mercy playing part of a Skynnyrd tune on their last tour)? A wonderful sense of humor at work, the same just-to-keep-them-guessing type idea? Maybe someone bet him $50 he wouldn't play it...? I always like the Satie/ Gymnopedie (I tink i speleld dat rite) version on the re-issue of Telekon. Very 80s, but also "Reincarnation of Peter Proud" (in a good way), too. btw, where/ on what was "Gymnopedie" first released? Anyway, there's my $.02, with change to spare.
