My name is Andy McHaffie, and I'm a 31 year old guy living in Esher, Surrey, UK. Been into Numan since '79. First album I bought was Warriors in '83, and have collected everything since then as it came out. I helped set up "Boys Like Us" with Dave Ellison - a mailing list for gay Numan fans. I also have recorded some Numan covers by myself, (very dodgy!) and some better ones with Phil Marsh. I play in a London band called "The Establishment" as the guitarist / singer. We have our 1st gig coming up on the 4th of March upstairs at The Garage, at Highbury Corner in London. We may do a Numan cover, but I have no ideas what yet. I work as an assistant manager of a pub in Esher, but hope to move to another pub in London sometime this year. Favourite albums include Exile, Telekon, The Plan, Tubeway Army, Replicas and Sacrifice. Low points for me include Machine & Soul, Outland, Metal Rhythm, and most syuff between '84 and '93. I'm looking forward to the new album and tour, and now it's not so far away, am beginning to get restless ! That's it for now Hope to contribute to the digest soon. Let's just learn our lesson from volume one and keep any personal debates to private mail ! I've been a fan now for over a year.My curiosity made me re-discover Garys, "the pleasure principle" remastered. From that point on, ive been getting all his CD's. would you believe I've finally purchased a copy of "Exile"?. Now its one of those CD's that I just cant put down. And to hear guitar again, just like his masterpiece "we are glass", is a welcome return. However, the keyboard Gary is still my favorite. "Telekon" is one of those albums thats great for late night drives down empty roads that really lead nowhere. You can only imagine a Gary Numan fan living in Miami. I really do feel like the only one(not that im a fanatic mine you) but his music does stir some subconscience ornaments within the everyday duldrum. As a final note, its great whenever I'm playing Gary very loud in my Miata. Top down, and people keeping stopping me and asking, "whos that?". or "what radio station is that?". I've also discovered some good record stores that carry his music. Especially I've found some good double-CD live albums, and some bootlegs of lesser quality. Would be nice if Gary could come to Florida, but it doesn't appear anytime soon. So anyway, just dropping a line saying Hi to everyone. Hope you had a great new years and Xmas. I received for xmas the Down in the park album and one of the tracks is called In A Glass House. I thought I had every numan song but have never heard this one. Does anyone know if this was ever released as a single or is it new on this album? To: "'digest@GaryNumanFan.NU'" To whom it may concern: It has been requested that I provide a bit of background information on my Gary Numan History. I first listened to Gary Numan around 1982, was introduced to his music by a friend transferring to my JH School from Atlanta. Been an avid listener ever since. I am a 29 year old Civil Engineer in Tennessee, USA.....one wife, two kids........approximately 17 to 20 Gary Numan CDs. If there is anything I might have left out, feel free to ask......I may not tell you, but you can ask. Roseanne "Barr" said during her first HBO stand-up comedy special... "If you are fat, just like be fat and shut up! If you are thin, f**k you!!" Insert "belief in God". Done. The track listing shows 13 songs in total (as does the CD) yet >there are only 9 tracks on the album!! The 'missing' songs are: Dark >Mountain/The Hauntings/In A Glasshouse/Hanoi. As I said, these are all shown >on the CD cover and printed on the disc, but aren't playable. >The CD number is NUMACDX 1009. >Please Help!!! You have what is known as the Extended M&S error pressing. Numa sent the masters off to be pressed on CD, go the CDs back and started mailing them out without checking them. When the error was discovered Numa recalled them but many were either kept or sold without anyone realizing the disc wasn't quite what it purported to be. A 13-track reissue with the same catalogue number was released soon thereafter. The 13 track version is out of print and probably hard to find. Many of the bonus tracks appeared on the Eagle reissue of M&S, but not In a Glass House. Hope that clears it up for you. See the Discography Jeff Tolva posted about in V2 #1. Derek San Diego, California ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Jan 2000 13:58:55 EST From: "Steven Lilly" Subject: Machine + Soul Extended Glitch To: digest@GaryNumanFan.NU Welcome to the nu server, guys... To he who asked, there was a misprint on the first run of MACHINE + SOUL EXTENDED. I got a copy in Tower Records in Philly that had the same problem- extended track listing, regular track actuality. They opened four copies in the store for me before they found one that actually had the bonus tracks on it. Methinks that album was cursed in general, although I don't dislike it like some seem to. It's certainly not my fave, but there's a gem on every Numan album. In the case of M+S it was the ballads for me, as well as the interesting intros and sounds throughout (I search for the good in everything, to quote Karen Peris). Can't wait for the new album. It's a shame that he's with a label other than his own at this point, only because it was so cool hearing in-progress snippets from EXILE on NuWorld, which probably can't happen for legal reasons now. You can't have everything....where would you put it? A brand spanking new and improved Digest for the New Millennium/21st. Century! If only it was in colour ... A hearty thanks to all those who answered my query about the reasons behind Gazza's version of "On Broadway" ... as you can guess I think it's so cool. It will of course be played at my wedding reception; gotta educate these Russkies. And many thanks to those of you who took time out to send me Numanoid well wishes for my approaching betrothal. I'd love to see an all singing all dancing lights and all Numan gig in Moscow, but alas he is a well kept secret here - way too subversive for the FSB (new version of the KGB). Also I wonder if Gaz could ever bring his genius to bear on other covers? Man, I'd love to hear his version of Led Zep's "Kashmir"! Can you imagine how heavy that would be? Or "Funkytown" maybe ... or Achy Breaky Heart ... just kidding. But ... Gary Numan and Leo Sayer? Isn't that a bit like Ozzy Osbourne and Val Doonican? Talk about opposites! BTW, I've been mixing specially edited versions of dance music for my reception - since I'm a control freak I'm playing pre-recorded mixed cassettes rather than trust some Russkie DJ to fuck it up - and somehow I've ended up with about 5 different versions of "Cars" spaced throughout 5 hours of music. It was on the B side of Cars, I seem to remember, while On Broadway was on one side of a free 7" single given away with the first hundred thousand (?) Telekons, together with Me! I Disconnect From You and possibly Bombers. It was a long time ago... and I managed to ruin the single by leaving it very close to an Anglepoise lamp I had hooked up next to the record player on the radiogram I was using at the time. I must say, the synth duet at the end of On Broadway is one of my very favourite Numan moments. I never got to see any of the Touring Principle shows -- they were all too far away and my parents wouldn't let me go -- but I got the videos at the time and still think that wall of light fade to black must have been an unforgettable experience. Ah, well. I played it once to a classical music buff, and as far as I can remember he told me it was basically a version of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. Since my knowledge of classical music is minimal, can anyone better nformed tell me what, if anything, Gary has based this tune on? They released the all-Numan compilation, called "Heightened Anxiety", last year around October or November or so, I got mine in December, I think. The track listing (http://www.razormaid.com/html/specialtysection/SpecialtyItems/Numan.htm) is as follows: This Disease (Remix) - Gary Numan I'm On Automatic - Sharpe & Numan I Can't Stop - Gary Numan No More Lies - Sharpe & Numan Change Your Mind - Sharpe & Numan My Dying Machine - Gary Numan Cars - Gary Numan Harlequin Tears (Remix) - Hohokam This Disease (Dub) - Tessa Niles Change Your Mind (CD Mix) - Sharpe & Numan Harlequin Tears (Razormaid "r-1" mix) Bear in mind that these are all unique Razormaid remixes, even if they don't say remix after them. The CD is awesome, I must say, although a bit pricey (over $30). Unfortunately it comes with a cheesy cover (see the web page) printed out on a color LaserJet or something in a little plastic film slipcase, not even a jewel case! I had only heard "Cars" and "I'm On Automatic" before I got this compilation. The "I Can't Stop" remix is my favorite version, and I never realized just what a good '80s synthpop tune that Hohokam track is. Nice to have this stuff in high quality, finally. To: The Gary Digest Dear renewed-manoids all, What's wrong with this picture: Jim "The Machman" Napier http://themachman.garynumanfan.nu Jeff Tolva (The Machman) mailto:machman@interaccess.com How can both you guys be "The" Machman? Either one of you is going to have to pick a different nickname, or one of you can be "A Machman" and the other "Another Machman." Or? Could it be? One Machman... TWO BODIES? > A few years ago I bought Machine & Soul - Extended which has been a > bit of a puzzle to me. The track listing shows 13 songs in total (as > does the CD) yet there are only 9 tracks on the album!! Andy, my copy has the same irregularity. I think it must have been a production error. I'm assuming most other copies of that disc had the bonus tracks on them. Afraid you're just going to have to scavenge up those extra tracks from other sources. The UK Eagle reissue of 'Machine + Soul' should have them all, or the fanclub discs Babylon 6s & 7s (sans "1999"), or you could hunt down all the original singles they were on ("Machine & Soul - the single!", "Machine & Soul 2 - the sequel!", "The Skin Game", and "Emotion"). I actually like my copy better for it not having those on there. It makes it a pure extended version of the album, instead of a place to dump out all of everything else Gary was doing at the time. He wrote once that albums should be more than just a summing up of the music he's created since the last one, and I agree. But, I suppose it's easy for me to feel that way, since I have all those bonus bits elsewhere. > I am, of course, talking about the live cover of "On Broadway". Great > version, but in God's name (whoops) WHY??? Can I just pipe in here and say that that track is my favorite on 'Ornaments 79'? Okay, here's why. To my thinking, there are two ways to evaluate a "live" song: on the merits of the song itself; and (since most music we find on a "live" album are performances of songs we've heard already in studio recordings-- 'Live At The Roxy' the notable exception) on the merits of how it's been adapted from the original. I think we all have to agree, that song was deifinitely the most "improved" from its original. Plus, I'm also a HUGE fan of Ultravox, and hearing Billy Currie's synthesizer wail at the end of that song is a true zen moment. > btw, where/ on what was "Gymnopedie" first released?
