Talking about the original UK releases only, Trois Gymnopaedies was (as Ben said at the end of the last Digest) on the flip of We Are Glass (Asylum was on the back of Cars). On Broadway was indeed on the Telekon free 7" - with the live version of Remember I was Vapour. The live 0000,0000,0000Bombers was on the B-side of the 7" Complex, joined by the live Me! [Thought experiment deleted to save space - see V2 #1 for details.] To compare, I have changed a few details in your scenario.. You're at a Numan convention, and you're enjoying yourself well enough watching videos on a big projection screen, visiting stalls with lots rare Numan collectibles, when along comes some shrimpy guy wearing a bow tie, carrying a clipboard onto the stage, and interrupts the proceedings with a nasal voice over the PA system to say, "Ahem, ahem, ahem. We are going deviate from the convention's publicized agenda and I am going to talk to you about the current state of trade with China. He then removes a sheet from his board and starts a long treatise on the the post-cultural revolution explosion in trade with China. Maybe you decide to ignore the chap, and wait out the boredom but the chap sees that he has lost the majority of the audience and signals for the volume of the PA to be turned up so he can't be ignored. You're thoughts are "WOULD YOU SHUT UP, PLEEEAAAASSSSEE!!! THIS IS SOOOO BORING!!!" But no one could hear you anyway above the trends in oil consumption by the Chinese plastics industry.. After about half an hour it looks like the "chap" is approaching his conclusion. You're finally able to feel like relief is in sight, when another anti-social loner who had been standing in the corner all evening and staring at the floor, approaches the stage and takes over the mic upon the trade chaps conclusion.. "Well, I've been standing here by myself all night listening and you have not said anything about Taiwan! Taiwan is the key to any long term trade stability around the Pacific rim. Let me explain......." What would be your thoughts at this point? Would you be thinking, 'Well, this is why I came to the Numan convention. Clearly anything I expected to hear about are the wrong things entirely!' Or would you think to yourself, 'Who are these people taking over the convention? Why hasn't a convention organizer stepped in to get the convention back to things Numan?' Or would your thoughts be more along the lines of: 'What the @#%&?! I mean, what the *%$#-ing %^&@ ??!!?' Have I made my point? While both our analogies have flaws mine I believe is closer to the reality of the Digest >Any person should be able to post about any topic-- be it homoeroticism, >atheism, or anything any numanoid finds interesting. If anyone else >disagrees or finds it uninteresting, they're free to post about their >own subjects, and Mr.s Datta and Langsford's "administrivia" be damned. Bzzzzzt WRONG! I think you are missing a key point here. The Digest is more like a newspaper with minimal editorial control and not Speaker's Corner. Dave created the Digest software and together we got the Digest going in 1992. We set a few ground rules to keep it somewhat focused on Gary, the reason why many people subscribe, and as long as we feel that this serves the interest of the majority of subscribers we will keep it that way. Initially the Digest was moderated (i.e. edited for content) until truly tragic personal circumstances forced me to give up that role. And while others offered to take over, it seemed the subscribers were doing a good job of maintaining decorum and lively Numan-related debate. So Dave and I let it go unmoderated. Dave has been laboriously maintaining the subscription list for over 7 years now, and while my involvement has declined over the years (career, kids, a mortgage) I still think we have the final say over what happens with the Digest. I respect Dave's wishes, and I believe he respects mine. While dissent is fine with me, a democracy this is not. >We've all come together as fans of the Man. With that criterion for >admission met, let's communicate about anything we care to. We've each >had to stand alone in our appreciation of his music, when everyone >around us thought we were oddities for not listening to Britney Spears >or the Backstreet Boys. We've been plenty alienated by non-numanoids, >let's stop alienating each other. But any post about the validity of Christianity, homosexual morality or any off-topic subject is the initial act of alienation. This is not to what people have subscribed I agree that being a numanoid has not been an easy experience for many of us. I too was ridiculed at High School (geesh was I ridiculed). The Internet allowed me to share my appreciation for Gary with others. The Digest subscribers are a community that could not exist elsewhere. That community is built around Gary Numan and his music. There is a great diversity of people here. While I don't think controversy is necessarily something to avoid, controversy that is outside of the guidelines of the Digest is simply not worth the bandwidth to most subscribers. It is something that should be done privately in email, not the Digest. And if you want a public forum I am sure there is an alt.discussion newsgroup that covers virtually anything you might want to write about. >In the final analysis, are we here to serve the Digest, or is the Digest >here to serve us? The latter as it always has been and will be. But without some modicum of rules it will shrivel and die as a Numan forum. I believe a lack of any new material in two years is largely to blame for the spate of antagonism. What is happening now happened between 1994's Sacrifice and 1997's Exile - the longest period ever between Numan albums. We may only have to wait a couple more months if Eagle are to be believed (personally I am still expecting a fall release). Can you imagine > how heavy that would be? Or "Funkytown" maybe ... or Achy Breaky Heart ... > just kidding. This is such a good point. "Kashmir" is such an eternal bit of recorded music and it's so Numan, too. "Cold Warning" ploughs similar ground, vibe-wise. I thought I couldn't listen to Kash ever again after the Puff Daddy re-do he did for the Godzilla movie (the one with the "Size Does Matter" ad campaign). Not true. The track is pretty powerful. "Funky Town" would suit Gary fine too, actually. The other morning I had the Beatles track "Glass Onion" going around my head but with Numan singing it. What about Gaz doing "Eight Miles High"? I'd like to hear a Numan all-covers album. Oooo...actually maybe not. While on this thread, Gazza said that he only did those Prince covers because the record company thought to further his career and move units, he should record some mining songs. Now THAT sounds pretty wild. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2000 14:27:54 -0000 From: "Lee Matthews" Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #606 To: "Gary Numan" REMOVE OFF MAILING LIST -----Original Message----- From: numan@cs.uwp.edu To: datta@oldcs.uwp.edu Date: 09 January, 2000 7:19 AM Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #606 > >Gary Numan Digest Sun, 9 Jan 10 Volume 1 : Issue 606 > >Today's Topics: > > M&S Extended >------------------------------------------------------------------------ > >Date: Sat, 8 Jan 2000 02:50:31 -0800 >From: newcombg4@mindspring.com >Subject: >To: "Numan Digest" > >"You can stop this from happening by telling outlook to turn off MIME by >default. Subject: Gary Who? :) To: digest@GaryNumanFan.NU Hi, all. Introduction, huh? Well, let's see.... I'm none other than David Brezniak, of Worcester, Massachusetts, (that's in the USA). I'm 28, been a Numan fan since 1979 (haven't most of us?) I'm always on the prowl for Numan fans. In fact, I have the only allowable address: numanoid@webtv.net -- as the Network only allows a name to only be used once (durr)...and since I was among the first to get the system, BINGO! I use that email address primarily to promote and advertise to various newsgroups. (well, ok, I get some of my smutt mail there, too..but we all gotta have an outlet :-)) I'm also a (uh oh) proud member of Boys Like Us (yes, I said it)... I've made a lot of friends here, and will continue to do so. To the person with the Miata in Florida playing 'Exile' with the top down, I'd normally say 'I'm jealous' but in this case, I'll just have to give a big 'YOU GO!' -- now get a copy of 'Exile Extended' as it is definitely a real bass-thumper of a cd. Well I think that's enough of an intro for now. My best to you all, and please remember my email addys or are always open.. so feel free to write! Cheers! -Dave Brezniak ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Jan 2000 12:07:44 -0600 From: Jeff Tolva Subject: Introduction by The Machman (one of them anyway) To: digest@GaryNumanFan.NU Fellow Numanoids, For those who haven't met me before, my real name is Jeff Tolva, but I've gone by the nickname The Machman since the late Eighties. I live in Elgin, Illinois, USA (about an hour west of Chicago) and I've always listed posts to the Digest, etc as Jeff Tolva (The Machman) only because I've seen others use the same nickname. If I only put The Machman, you might not know who exactly to flame ;-) Some of my favorite albums include: Replicas, The Pleasure Principle, Telekon, Sacrifice and Exile. It's so difficult to pick just one. Some favorite tracks include: I Nearly Married A Human, Metal, Engineers, I'm An Agent, Stories, Exhibition, Deadliner and An Alien Cure. I can find something on every one of Gary's albums that I like, but like everyone else I have my favorites. I will rarely get involved with the petty bickering in the Digest only because I think it's rediculous to fight about someone we all like and admire in the first place. Having differing opinions on things is one thing, but personally attacking/flaming someone for their beliefs is quite another IMO. I'll get off of my soapbox now... Back to The Machman thing brought up by Benjamin, the whole Replicas album and the persona of The Machman that Gary created for that album has always made it one of my all-time favorites. I've also had the personalized lincense plate MACHMAN on my car since the mid-Eighties as well, so I guess it's stuck to me for good! I guess the nickname has been around a while for me, but I know of at least two other fans who also go by the same nickname. On the May 1998 US Exile tour, I had the chance to meet Jim Napier (another Machman) from the original North American Gary Numan Fan Club on several occasions. We exchange e-mail from time to time and have traded bootleg tapes over the years too. A nice guy IMHO :-) A little more about me though, I've been a fan of Gary Numan ever since seeing Gary perform "Cars" and "Praying To The Aliens" on Saturday Night Live in early 1980. The first album I ever bought was The Pleasure Principle. It wasn't just his music that attracted me though, it was the way he moved and his whole stage presence that captivated me from the very beginning. And I've been a massive fan ever since! I first met Gary after the second of his last three gigs in London during the 1988 Metal Rhythm Tour. He impressed me even more with his persence in person and that meant alot to me as well. I've been a collector of Gary's music, etc for more years than I can remember. I collect all kinds of printed material (i.e. newspaper articles, Fan Club newsletters, books, etc), but my complete collection of tour programmes from 1979 to 1998 is one of my most prized possessions! In addition to having a pretty substantial vinyl and CD collection, I also collect and trade audio and video bootlegs as I think Gary live in concert is one of the best parts of his music. I have nearly 100 audio tapes which mostly includes bootleg concerts, but I have several "extras" on tape such as early demos of The Pleasure Principle and Outland albums. I have around 30 hours of unique Gary Numan video in NTSC format which keeps me glued to the television on many weekends. I'm always up for a good trade of audio or video tapes though, so if you want to e-mail your list of stuff, I'll e-mail you mine! >From my early days on the Gary Numan Digest, I thought I wanted give something back to the many Numanoids that I've corresponded with over the years, hence my ongoing contribution of updating to the "compleat" Gary Numan discography which can be accessed both through The Gary Numan Fan Server and The World Wide Webb sites. I also moderate the Collector's Corner thread on The Gary Numan Fan Server site message board. I've always been a bit "anal" when it comes to discography details, so it seemed a perfect fit for me to continue the good work begun by Dave Datta with the text based Gary Numan discography. I constantly use it myself for references to all of Gary's music and concerts. I've had many compliments over the years by fans who like the information which it provides, but I don't own everything Gary's ever put out (unfortunately), so the discography will only be as good as the information which people send me for updates. I'd personally like to thank everyone who has contributed to those updates over the years. It's because of fans like you that we have such a complete discography! I am merely the person who makes the updates. I'm sure this is more than anyone ever wanted to know about me... I have started a classic, "old school" styled Numan Zine titled LISTEN TO THE SIRENS. I am looking for short (but good) articles from Numan fans, especially reviews and experiences had at his gigs (no matter how old). Any cool black and white pics would also be greatly appreciated. My friend Anthony (who saw the Touring Principle tour, Teletour, and I Assassin/Dance tours in the USA when I was a youngin' as well as Exile in 98 with me) will be contributing some good tales of the old "machine era" gigs. Anyone who has seen his Warriors-through-Sacrifice shows please send some reviews! Please send anything decent to LTTS / PO Box 060382 / Staten Island / NY / 10306 USA. Contributors get a free copy. This zine will be advertised in loads of other fanzines across the globe. I know these days the Internet has made many of us lazy, but remember.....unless you have a laptop, you can't read too many good pieces of Numanism in the rest room!!!!! PS--All who asked for me to photcopy Numan's article from CREEM magazine, 6/80, I have shipped them on 1-11-00. If anyone else wants a copy just write and ask. Just like to thank you for explaining the Machine & Soul Extended dilemma I had (about the 'extra tracks') Now I can sleep at night! Also, a few years ago, I was living in Milton Keynes (don't laugh!!) and my wife was taking her driving test. As she drove down the main street past the PostHouse Hotel, what did she see in the car park but Gary Numan's Bus! She screamed out with excitement, almost sending the examiner into a panic. When she got back to the test centre, she was told that she'd passed! (I wonder if the examiner was a secret Numanoid?) Gary had been performing at a local venue called The Sanctuary. Unfortunately I wasn't able too go. Either one of you is going to >have to pick a different nickname, or one of you can be "A Machman" and >the other "Another Machman." >Or? Could it be? One Machman... TWO BODIES? Well it's like this. There are different 'regional' Machman in both location and purpose. I happen to be the Machman of the Northeast catering to the more offbeat Numanoid. Jeff "The Machman" Tolva is the Machman of the Midwest and curator of what is the world's most complete Numan discography. The guy to the right of me with glasses on my website front page is Don "The Machman" Swanner, Jr., the Machman of the South, and he spreads the Numan gospel to the unenlightened via his personalized "NUMAN1" Virginia license plates. Think of it as the Holy Trinity of Machmen. Separate but still one and equal. Rumors persist of a fourth Machman. According to Machman Legend, he wanders the hills of southern Idaho blasting Numan music on his boombox. As a result, he has bonded with and become one with the wild animals there. It is said he continually petitions Gary to come play live in Boise, but the Numan camp will neither confirm nor deny the credibility of the lore. Congrats and props to The Tick Tock Man, I wish many happy years for ya both! About your reference to Gary playing with Leo Sayer, everyone told Gary not to do that as it simply wasn't fashionable to be seen with Leo, even in 1984. But Gary perservered, and thank goodness. It is a veritable treat to watch. I mean, Gary playing a drunk? Hahahaha!!! In 1991, I published in the NAGNFC Fanzine that Gary would be doing 2 Prince covers. Many thought it actually was a holks on my part, others were willing to bet personal items that it wasn't true. Gary always has had a lot of tricks up his sleeve like that, it's fascinating. Just when you think you have him pegged too. I Am Render indeed......... The "80's Hits" channel has Cars (the original single) on rotation. I've heard it twice so far in the space of a week, so it's getting decent airplay, eh? DMX (Digital Music Express), the channel providers, are working on a feature which shows the ALBUM COVER and BIO of the song's artist for all these channels. That would be something to see. There was talk of Robert Palmer a couple of digests ago, reminded me of something I was going to put to you guys. Has anyone else noticed the similarity of the song "New Anger" to Palmer's "Addicted To Love" ? If not, go have a listen. Imagine the lyrics swapped around... Oh, one other thing... I've been using the marvellous program ICQ for quite a while now, and just tried another chat interface called "IRC," (I'm using pIRCh) which patches into hosts like DALnet and EFnet and the mind-boggling amount of chat channels they carry. If any of you are familiar with this, maybe you could inform me of any Numan channels you know of. If there aren't any, I'll start one. There's a goth compilation called 'The Darkest Hour' dating from 1997, which includes a cover of "Are 'Friends' Electric?" by Information Society. (Excuse me? When did they become goth?) Gee, another compilation... I wonder what label it's on? Catalog # CLP0029-2. Another compilation, this time on 21st Circuitry Records, sounds pretty clever in concept (but I've heard is not stellar in execution) is a collection of goth and industrial covers of new wave songs. This one has a cover of (what else?) "Cars" by a band called Luxt. The album also dates from 1997, catalog # 21C.CD21. (A better album with the same concept is 'New Wave Goes To Hell,' put out by our old dependable compilation compilers, Cleopatra. No Gary tunes on it, but I'd recommend the renditions to any fan of new wave, goth, or industrial.. or all three, like me. 1998, CLP 0359-2) I've also seen "Down In The Park" on a Marilyn Manson bootleg concert recording, but I didn't catch the name of the boot. Speaking of mangled lyrics, what is the story with Posh's cover of "She's Got Claws" on 'Random'? Let me guess, they had the single and never bothered with the album, so they never saw the lyrics sheet? "Here on the ground, lies a fool... It's all lies, lies, lies..." Uh huh. > I received for xmas the Down in the park album and one of the tracks > is called In A Glass House. I thought I had every numan song but have > never heard this one. Does anyone know if this was ever released as a > single or is it new on this album? Marty, "In A Glass House" was a b-side on the "Emotion" single. It was also on the 'Babylon 6' disc, and the US reissue of 'Machine + Soul.' I love that song. I think that's the first appearance of the atmospheric style of background singing that Gary used so magically all over 'Exile,' instead of the screeching style we'd gotten used to. love, Benjamin Iglar-Mobley http://home.earthlink.net/~iglarmobley (proud member of Boys Like Us) * * * "I'm sorry but I'm just thinking of the right words to say I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be But if you wait around a while I'll make you fall for me I promise I promise you I will" --When In Rome ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ****************************** ------------------------------------------------------------------- T H E G A R Y N U M A N D I G E S T is produced and distributed by Derek Langsford, Dave Datta, and Joey Lindstrom dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu, datta@cs.uwp.edu, Joey@GaryNumanFan.NU ------------------------------------------------------------------- To reply to the messages in this list, email: digest@GaryNumanFan.NU If you want to be removed, or someone wants to be added, email: digest-request@GaryNumanFan.NU ------------------------------------------------------------------ The Gary Numan Digest is brought to you via Joey Lindstrom and the GaryNUmanFan server Joey@GaryNumanFan.NU All of the opinions in this digest belong to the respective authors and do not necessarily agree with those of the Digest Producers. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Produced and distributed by Derek Langsford dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu -------------------------------------------------------------------------- To reply to the messages in this list, mail to: digest@garynumanfan.nu If you want to be removed, or someone wants to be added, you can mail to digest-request@garynumanfan.nu --------------------------------------------------------------------------
