I have killed the old digest completely from that machine now and we shouldn't be seeing anything from there again. -Dave ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Jan 2000 07:41:16 -0500 From: Matthew Roberts Subject: Bowie & 1999 To: Gary Numan A new book, "Changes - The Stories Behind Every David Bowie Song 1970-198= 0" rehashes my theory that Teenage Wildlife is about Gary Numan. However, it= points out that there was a different, unnamed, 70's pop star who approached Bowie for advice and probably gave at least partial inspiratio= n for the song. On the subject of the Thin White Duke, I think I suggested a while ago th= at Bowie's new album, "hours..." was rubbish. I take it all back, it's actually got some rather brilliant songs on it. It might even eventually replace Earthling as my favourite Bowie album. Just goes to show that you= shouldn't dismiss music on first hearing. Since it's nearly a year since I did the first "favourite album chart", a= nd there has been so much great music released since, here's my personal 199= 9 top 10: 1. The Ideal Crash - dEUS = 2. Title Of Record - Filter 3. hours... - David Bowie 4. 13 - Blur 5. Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too - New Radicals (1998 but who knew?) 6. Supergrass - Supergrass 7. The Fragile - Nine Inch Nails 8. Head Music - Suede 9. Midnite Vultures - Beck 10. Surrender - The Chemical Brothers 2000 looks pretty good too.... The Smashing Pumpkins - MACHINA/The Machines Of God (more Mellon Collie than Adore apparently, but Adore was such a unique album, that's OK) Marilyn Manson - In The Shadow Of The Valley Of Death (hopefully a return= to Antichrist Superstar form) Kraftwerk - Expo 2000??? (a follow up to Electric Cafe?) plus Gary Numan, Radiohead and Placebo. Matthew Roberts ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Jan 2000 01:38:32 -0600 From: Valerie Iglar-Mobley Subject: cancel silence, they screamed for days To: The Gary Digest Dear Derek, and numanoids all, > Or would you think to yourself, 'Who are these people taking > over the convention? > ... > Have I made my point? While both our analogies have flaws mine I > believe is closer to the reality of the Digest Uh, judges, I'm going to need a ruling on this one... > Bzzzzzt WRONG! Oh, I'm so sorry, thank you for playing. Where your analogy breaks down is in the fact that no one can monopolize the Digest. There isn't just one microphone. No matter how long any one person yammers on, anyone else is still free to post whatever else they wish to. Those text-salad image-file attachments amply proved that point; they were absolutely huge, but the rest of the Digest came through nonetheless, they weren't squeezed out. No one even HAS to read anyone else's post. Anyone can skip over a post by just doing a search for the next "subject:" (barring that phrase being interjected into a post, like this). I've done this myself to get past those pesky image files. So, since it's not out of consideration for size constraints, nor to save subscribers from messages they can't avoid, the ONLY reason to censor messages is... just to control the speech. Just for fun. Just to flex muscle. To get rid of whatever input you personally would like to do without. Well, how nice for you. > But any post about the validity of Christianity, homosexual morality > or any off-topic subject is the initial act of alienation. That is just so wrong. Diversity is not alienation, it's exactly the opposite; it's inclusion. Censorship is alienation! (That comment of yours is so Orwellian it rates right up there beside the classics, like "war is peace" or "freedom is slavery.") > While dissent is fine with me, a democracy this is not. Well now, isn't that an interesting statement. I hope everyone read that comment, and understands what is being said. "Ultimately, this isn't OUR Digest. It's mine." * * * Of course, I think we all know why the Digest has censors. What is it they're afraid we might say? Why has Gary stopped linking to some sites, claiming he was doing so "because they were offering MP3 files for downloading"? Let's bring it out in the open! The real reason they're afraid to keep this forum free is because of the danger that we might expose the truth, which is that XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX bootleg recording of Gary's unreleased demos of XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX the "machmen" co-conspiring to XXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX finally get to be heard. There. Now, it's been said. Derek and Dave, you don't have to worry about censorship, anymore; the dirty little secret you've been hiding is out of the bag, at last. You can relax your vigilant watch over what we post. love to all, and great relief that I don't have to carry that alone, anymore, Benjamin Iglar-Mobley http://www.TheX-files.com (proud member of BaranOYdS LIKE US) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Jan 2000 11:14:15 -0800 (PST) From: PolareBear Subject: Come back in time with the NAGNFC To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Well NumaNews is slow these days, so come back in time with me won't you? The NAGNFC has been making Numanoids smile and informing them for over 10 years. Ever wonder what the first issue in 1989 was like? The NAGNFC Website will soon present a special gallery feature on the horse and buggy days of the NAGNFC. In the meantime, here are the very first words by a 21-year old Jim "The Machman" Napier from a time when most folks had never heard of the Internet: VOLUME ONE - NOVEMBER 1989 - ISSUE ONE Hello fellow Numanoids! Welcome to the first issue of the only Gary Numan fan club this side of the big pond. The main reason I started a fan club was to bring Numan lovers from everywhere together in a publication that will inform with updates, answer questions any member sends in (and there may be many as interviews are rare!), discographies to assist aspiring collectors, and to help out even more, arrange free Numan items to be given away in a monthly trivia contest. All this and a few surprises along the way. Many of us have been Numanoids for many, many years. How many times have one of us asked someone if they've heard of the guy? Usually all we receive in return is a blank stare. One time someone responded to me, "Isn't he the comedian?" Hardly!! Hopefully, all this will change with his first brand new U.S. release since I, Assassin in 1982. It's called New Anger out on I.R.S. Records, and for those of you who haven't yet taken it home, you can actually buy this Numan LP at ANY STORE THAT SELLS MUSIC!! Yes, even your local mall has this one. This album is much like Metal Rhythm released in England on the Illegal label in 1988, only some of the songs are remixed and the U.S. LP has a remixed version of 'My Dying Machine' from his 1984 release Berserker (on his own record label, Numa). There is a lyric off his latest solo single, America, that goes "I'm looking for America, I'm looking for you...", and believe you me, he is in a major way. Not only has he signed onto a U.S. label, but my local college radio station is starting to play stuff off New Anger. Could this mean (gasp!) his first U.S. tour in ten years? Could it be possible? Egad! I'm waiting with baited breath! Whew! I'm okay now. Please write and let me know your thoughts on this or anything else (and get to see your name in print in the process!). AFTER A RARE ARTICLE, THE 1978 DISCOGRAPHY, IS TRIVIA ELECTRIC?, THE AUDIO PRINCIPLE AND LOTSA EXCLUSIVE PICS, THE FIRST FANZINE ENDED LIKE THIS: Next month, your newsletter will feature the 'Numan Classifieds'! If you have stuff you're looking for and/or items for sale or if you just need some pen pals that share your interest, forward your ads at this address. Ads are free to all members. I'd like to say at this point that it has been a lot of fun assembling this newsletter. Many people should be thanked for their talented efforts. Diane for her artist's rendition, my grandfather for his typewriter, my father for his support, and my mother for her white-out. The article was from a magazine no one's ever heard of called 'Way Ahead' (1978). 'Til next time! c 1989 Gary Numan Fan Club of North America And thus began NAGNFC history. The fanzine went on to be shipped to 12 countries monthly and became far bigger and slicker looking. A real and palpable community was formed. In a world of Rick Astley and Kylie Minogue, the NAGNFC served as much a support group for Numanoids as well as a way to see the latest news and pictures. See a couple pics from that historic first issue here: http://members.xoom.com/numann/numann/nagnfc1.jpg http://members.xoom.com/numann/numann/nagnfc2.jpg Then come see what the hell we're up to these days!: http://themachman.garynumanfan.nu 'Til next time! This cheesy and quite UNentertaining drivel sure brings back memories of the equally cheesy North American Fan Club newsletter. << I will grant the following: I may still be bitter over ordering and never receiving a number of Numan videos Napier claimed to have sent and re-sent me (his replies of "I guess there's a Numanoid at the Fort Bragg post office who wanted those tapes just a little bit more than you!" got old REAL fast.)>> To continue, while searching Ebay for Numan stuff to add to my collection, I see: GARY NUMAN - The Video Principle (Vol. 1) VHS Item #230660378 Sold on Ebay for $76. A freaking copy of a copy of a copy of those old Numan tv appearances a lot of us have, copied once more and auctioned off to the public. Somehow, I find this so much different than offering identical copies to his old newsletter subscribers for $10, maybe $15, or selling his "Noise Noise" cassettes for $5. I am tolerant of selling these tapes to Numanoids at a reasonable price to cover expenses, but putting one on Ebay is clearly a moneymaking venture. Those Numan clips aren't yours to sell, Napier. What on EARTH was your motivation to do this? If you were truly interested in spreading Numan out to folks who didn't know these appearances are exchanged freely in areas like this email list, you would've offered more than just one copy, considering how easily these can be cranked out on a dual VCR. Those TV appearances are NOT yours to sell. You've put my mind at ease and now I can sleep at night!!! A few years ago, my wife was taking her driving test and as she made her way down the street she looked across the road and saw Gary's bus standing outside a local hotel. She screamed out with excitement, almost giving the poor examiner a heart attack!! When she got back to the test centre, the examiner turned to her and said "You've passed"!! (I wonder if he was a secret Numanoid??) Garys bus was outside the hotel because he had been performing at a local venue the night before (The Sanctuary, Milton Keynes) Sadly, I couldn't make it. However, I'm still proud to claim (and boast to my non-Numan friends) that I was at The Appollo, London when he did the Dream Corrosion tour. (Haven't been able to spot myself on the video though!!) I updated my email program and for some reason it turned off the "send as plain text" tick box I had previously...didn't last time I installed an update, so it didn't occur it might have this time...anyway, very sorry to all; hopefully this message is code free. And I don't even use Outlook.... Incidentally, going briefly back to the "Machman" thread - I was forgetting (being from li'l ole Englan') - the USA is many times bigger, and obviously has plenty of room for plenty of Machmen...:-) Just so long as none of you start signing off "The "original" Machman" or something! :-) Jeff, your reg plate must be worth an absolute fortune...cool or WHAT?! :-) Anyway, wouldn't it be nice, following Derek's very reasonable explanation of why we subscribe here, and the new server, new year...if we tried to avoid the rows and flame wars that became common place last year (I hope to God I have turned off the html on this message, otherwise I'll be starting a new one!). Jim "The Machman" Napier here to serve and protect the needs of Numanoids the world over. Big announcement this week: The XOOM.Com site: http://members.xoom.com/polarebear/polarebear/machman.htm is no more. The popularity of the labyrinth NAGNFC Website and the 110 MB of audio and pictures was getting a little too big for the likes of XOOM.COM. The files were unceremoniously pulled. But never fear, brand new audio files will be featured over time! In fact, the entire NAGNFC site will be bigger than before! On the upside, it's very flattering for the NAGNFC to get booted from a lowly mainstream freebie outfit. Thanks to Joey Lindstrom and the NuServer, the NAGNFC now completely enters an upper echelon of webism without the unsightly banner ads! Stay tuned for pure, unadulterated NAGNFC goodness! If you have used the old address for the past few years, there is an identical mirror site that has existed since May. So change your bookmark to: http://themachman.garynumanfan.nu for all your NAGNFC needs. But ya know, I do kind of miss those banner ads plastered across the top of every page on XOOM.com. No, wait, I must have said that because of the strong penchant odor of a gas leak I am smelling. I best go check it out before something explodes. This is my 3rd house this month and the insurance company is getting suspicious. Bye all!
