I, too have seen some of those build-your-own CD things and have been generally disappointed at the pile of crap songs they tend to put up for sale (for most artists)...I wouldn't mind trying to find enough of the Gary's B-sides listed to make an all-b-sides CD (or two...I'm sure there are enough songs)...any suggestions for titles? I really think that, being who we are in space and > all, we're a lot better suited to singing about being... IN CARS!" > --Joel and the bots Actually, this is how I started watching MST3K in the first place. I was flipping past channels to get to C-SPAN and just happened to hit them right when they were singing Cars to the beeping of a 1970s Simon Game. That was the episode where there was this little alien named "Trumpy". > An interesting question. I'd like to go one step further. > In my opinion > there is way too much musical categorizing, if you will, in the > music scene > today and among music fans. More and more people say, "I like > everying but > __(insert any type of music here)___". I think that is terribly limiting > and frankly kind of dumb. For example, I'm not a fan of Neil Diamond, but > I'm not going to say that EVERY song he every wrote and recorded is crap. This is certainly true of the Bee Gees. So today if one invokes the Bee Gees one is instantly met with chuckles. Because they are so strongly identified with a movement or a period of history. I think that the Bee Gees would still be fine if it weren't for the big white bell bottomed slacks. In the states, the same thing is true for Numan. If one invokes Numan people instantly associate him with Cars. Or Thomas Dolby with Blinded Me with Science. I frequently find myself giving Rock History 101 to people and informing them that the Bee Gees, Gary Numan, Thomas Dolby, Neil Diamond et al not only had vast repertoires of varied and interesting music, but that they were also very much responsible for the music that those people claim to like or listen to today. I truly believe that major hits can often be a horrible curse for an artist. > stronger tracks on "Exile", I think it's still a good song. Never in a > million years would I say it's crap. Here's my take on this, more or less. Maybe it's sort of a tangent. Anyway, I think that Gary is highly talented and always quite interesting. I also think he's a human being. I _LIKE_ the fact that there are some songs of Gary's that I can't stand. It means that he's more of a human being. I have lots of friends who like some of my art or music or writing yet don't like other things that I've created. The same thing is true for me with the products of my friends. If someone created something and I liked every single inch of it I would feel like a no-mind consumer who was eating spoon fed shit from a consumer product engine. I am glad that Gary seems to be finding a voice and a path that feels more natural to him. I never felt that those years when he was trying to be A-Ha served him very well. I mean, look at where A-Ha is now. I never find myself defending their musical integrity. :) > BENCHMARK SUPPLY > 7540 BRIDGEGATE COURT > ATLANTA GA 30350 Can someone hack these people for me? To: Gary Numan Digest Matthew Roberts was absolutely right about being certain about what you are buying before handing over the cash. Although in my case I was entirely to blame. The first bootleg I ever bought was around 1984. It included nothing new to me except for one mysterious track on the label called I Dig You Dig. Of course, I could barely flash my cash quickly enough when I spotted this. Now in retrospect I should have guessed that I would be in for a major disappointment. Firstly, I Dig You Dig does not sound like a typical Numan song. More like a novelty hit for Alan Titchmarsh (Britain's favourite gardener). Secondly, the tape also included Wg Arg Glass. I assume that I just noticed the word Glass and ignored the rest of the title. And thirdly, well, =91I Dig You Dig=92 does sound rather similar to I Die You Die, which I of course owned several times over. =20 Yes. You guessed it, the bootlegger was just a very poor typist or had a broken E key on his typewriter (probably only me and Paddy V remember those). And I ended up with egg on my face. All my fault though of course. Ho hum. Ranks alongside my Life in Tokyo extended version which was 1 second longer than the original. But that's another story...... Walters" Subject: Romeo Must Die To: Gary Numan Okay... this is what happened: I told Gary about seeing the Romeo Must Die "preview" on an entertainment/news television show at the end of last year (don't remember exactly when) and that they were using the music to Dominion Day. Now, I believe it was Entertainment Tonight, but it could have been any of those shows. What I saw was NOT the film trailer located here: http://www.romeomustdie.net/dld/romeo.mov which has DARK in the background -- so Gary was right about that in his News section. However, it could have been the film's "teaser" which is sort of like a film's pre-trailer. I didn't think it was even that, at the time. It seemed as though the show had put it together and used the Dominion Day music -- I could be wrong. It was most definitely the opening music to the extended version of the song, looped at least twice. The piece was more about Jet Li's emergence as the next Bruce Lee than about Romeo Must Die actually. I had no idea that Gary would change a News item on his web site when I e-mailed the site to inform him of what I had seen -- I just thought he might like to know. Could be he's not getting his royalties as he should. I didn't go into as much detail as I figured: if he knew, well... he knew. If he didn't know, he'd check into it to see about his royalties. I don't know, maybe he doesn't worry about the royalties. Anyway, that's that. It took me over two hours to locate the trailer listed above! Most of the sites links didn't work for some reason. Even Jet Li's site kept giving me errors. I know that the film's original release was set for September of 1999 -- but is now slated for March 24th, 2000. We'll see... Sorry if I caused any confusion by supplying Gary with the Dominion Day information. BTW... it was not the first time I had heard Numan's music used on an entertainment/news show. I won't swear it was the same show, but it probably was and there's a Numan fan working there. Take good care, Troy L. If not, then what do they have to do with Gary? Jason Orton __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo!
