It's an interesting point Mark made but putting Neil and Numan in the same post made me think of a Neil/Numan connection. A friend of mine, who used to be on this list, saw Neil Diamond in concert a few years ago. I really wish I had gone, too. It sounded like a real big event kind of a concert. I remember asking him what it was like and he said, "It was really weird but at times it was incredibly Numan." He went on to say that at one point all the lights dimmed very low and Neil came out in a glowing light suit identical to the Berserker tour suit Numan had on during the performance of The Iceman Comes. At that point I kicked myself mentally for not going. When I first saw Gary wearing the white belt on the cover of The Fury, I remember I thought of Neil Diamond. The belt is about performance and high visability. Neil is about those same things. Musically, I don't know much about Neil, I'll have to admit. Since being an ardent Numan fan since age 14 or 15, I've noticed that anything in I like in entertainment, whether it's Kirk and Spock or Lee Hazlewood, seems to always have a "Numan factor" to it. It's interesting that even Diamond has a Numan factor to him, if only in the visual sense. The archetypal energy that Numan channeled to me seemed organic and impossible to immitate but it has found echoes all over the place. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jan 2000 08:54:59 -0000 From: thoutby@fusiongroup.co.uk (Tim Houtby) Subject: Mark Burton To: "'Numan Digest'" Here's a long-shot.... Does anyone in the UK remember Mark Burton ? He was a SERIOUS Numan fan back in the 80's, and hailed from Sheffield (Wincobank to be excact). He was a pal of John Hickmans for a good while. Anyway, I'm trying to trace him. The last I recall, he was running a model aircraft shop on Sheffield, which closed "due to ill health". Does anyone out there know him, and know what happened to him ?? I'd be eternally grateful for any info. Thanks, Tim. ________________________________________________________________________________ This message has been checked for all known viruses by the Star Screening System http://www.star.net.uk/stats.asp ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2000 22:35:03 +0800 (WST) From: iann@mbox.com.au Subject: Nokia Logo To: digest@garynumanfan.nu A few people have mentioned using Numan's tunes as ringtones for their Nokia cell phones, I just had an idea of using the Tubeway Army face for the Operator Logo or the Startup Logo. If anyone has done this, and saved it as a Nokia Logo File, please share it with the rest of us. It would look really cool to see the Tubeway Army face pop up every time I turned on my Nokia. I'm hoping someone can help me out with this decision. Sometime ago, I borrowed of a copy of the Radioheart single on vinyl and I kind of liked the song. So when this whole issue with the Numan/Nicholson availability was resolved, I was keen to purchase the CD so I'd have this one song. I went out to the Sister Ray website to order this the other day and now I see that they have another CD entitled Radioheart. My question is this: Do I want the N/N compliation or this Radioheart release? I'm afraid I don't know much about either one as the one song was all I'm familiar with. Can someone give me their opinion on either or both of these releases? Thanks in advance. There's an interesting interview with Gary about his Macintosh and related stuff on Apple's web site. The URL is http://www.apple.com/creative/music/numan/index.html . Don't forget to visit my site! http://members.xoom.com/numaniac/ . It's been updated and I'm working on reviving the dead links. Stargreen suggest it has, but I can't find any confirmation on the Web. Continuing in the series of useless television shows that VH1 has been making lately, I saw a new show today, called Rock n Roll Records, which is kind of a Guiness Book of World Records for music. They showed a piece on the band who played the most shows in one day (Jackal), the most show on three continents (3 - Def Leppard), the top cover song (I Will Always Love You), Highest Roof Top Performance (you don't want to know), etc... Following a piece on the woman who owns both an Elvis wart and toe nail clipping (seriously), the announcer says, The man they call the King has over 40,000 imitators worldwide, fans of all ages backgrounds and mental capacities. All in an attempt to recreate the Elvis magic. When it comes to being impersonated, Elvis clearly has the most imitators. Now prepare yourself for the man at rock bottom... title: Most Obscure Cover Tribute Act Announcer: Gary Numan, 80's new wave icon, author of the hypnotic hit Cars Numan never again achieved the success of that song, but there s one man who will never forget. Jason: Gary Numan has been the soundtrack to my life. Everybody's influenced by somebody, it's just that all my influences are from one person. Announcer: Meet 27 year old Englishman Jason Smith, the musical genius behind "The Numan Principle" a tribute to 80s one hit wonder Gary Numan. Some consider Jason the Numan doppelganger, and yes the similarity is eerie. In 1995 Jason made the supreme sacrifice for his craft - complicated and painful hair integration surgery. Jason: It wasn't particularly because of Gary Numan, it was vanity really, its just Gary Numan gave me an excuse to do it. Announcer: Sometimes Jason is confronted by those who just don t understand, but it all comes with the territory of being more Numan than Human. Jason: I can't say I want to stop it now because I can't. Its natural it just happens. ************************************************************************** It was very strange, Jason looks like a chubby version of Gary but the similarity is as good as any Elvis impersonator. Hair, makeup, clothing, everything. The clips they showed of him performing live looked remarkably like the Exile tour... I'm sure the show will be repeated in the near future.
