I thought it was a cool touch to have their clothing change colors just like the beginning of the original "Cars" video when Gary's clothing changes as he walks into the neon pyramid. Coincidence? I think not ;-) Not a bad commercial to promote Oldsmobile cars, especially since commercial time during the Superbowl was 2 million US dollars per 30 seconds. There is a new Oldsmobile TV advert airing in the USA which features "Cars" The ad is a take on the recent Gap (clothing store) ads where a group of fashionable young people sing a cover of an 80's new wave song. One recent Gap ad featured Depeche Mode's "Just Can't Get Enough" In fact, I thought it was a Gap ad, until the car pulls into the scene at the end of the spot. The spot aired tonight on the Jay Leno Show on NBC at about 12:30am today. Cheers! David a.k.a. To: digest@garynumanfan.nu Oh yes--I was watching NYPD BLUE in NY the other evening, when a commercial that looked like a trendy Gap ad with annoying looking models started cranking everyone's favorite 80s tune, CARS!!!!! Suddenly, the models run to the side and the new oldsmobile skids into the picture, while (what I guess) is an interpretation of Numan's classic blares in the background!!! It featured a bunch of slack-jawed, doe-eyed bohemian Gen-X types singing "Cars" to what sounded like Numan's original instrumental version...a spoof of all of those clothing commercials in which the youngsters sing old songs while modeling hip clothing. The clip ended with a snazzy Olds screeching up and sending all the hip kids scrambling. Who would have thought twenty years ago that Numan would be used to sell Oldsmobiles, the original geezer car! This is not your father's Oldsmobile indeed! Still, its nice to see, once again, that there are some folks in the ad industry that do remember and do appreciate! To: "Numan Digest" Semi-amusing response to Gary Perkins' question concerning amusing Numan meetings: I steamed into Gaz at the Holiday Inn after one of his Metal Rhythm gigs at the Astoria in Oct. 88 (?) if memory serves. In typical Aussie fashion, I walked up to him, beer in hand, said "G'day Gary!" and he shook my hand, said that he remembered me chatting to his dad a few years prior etc. We chatted about many things for several minutes (he's extremely down to Earth) while those black babes that he was using as backing singers hung around flirting with us. I asked him "Is it tough being famous?" And he replied, "Sometimes yeah. But when these fat girls camp out on my front lawn I don't come out. If they were babes it would be different, but I seem to attract these fat ugly cows ... " Then he got this far away look and let out a big sigh ... BTW my wedding reception went down like a bomb, even though I spent most of my wedding day monumentally pissed on vodka and champagne. One mate commented, "Great dance tracks, even the 8 versions of "Cars"! BTW Gary, take my advice; if you ever feel over-awed by a famous person, just imagine them sat on the toilet, and the reality of the situation will be restored ... I fear that I now have an a-haphobia now that manefests itself sometimes in ugly ways. So I remove the pejorative band reference and will rephrase to say that Gary wasn't producing stuff that was up to his own level of creativity and giftedness. During the Superbowl (only one of the most watched television events in America each year) the commercial spots go for millions of dollars. This year, 2.5 million. Just prior to the games half-time festivities an OLDSMOBILE commercial is run. It starts out like those GAP adds, where these guys and girls stand around in kackys, singing 80's tunes. Then, they begin to scramble as a brand new Oldsmobile slides into the center of the screen. It's awesome! So, what does this have to do with Gary Numan? The song they are singing is CARS! Couldn't have picked a better song for the advert. I realize it's "kind of" living on past glories -- but it is a 2000 model year Oldsmobile. :-) Hope all is well. Take good care, Troy L. Cary ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2000 20:08:20 +1300 From: "D & J Hall" Subject: Remastering To: "Numan Digest" Yesterday I received the BB re-issue of Dance in the mail, courtesy of NuStreet. One word - "Brilliant!" Congrats to Steve, Steve and Jeff[1] on the re-issue. I'd almost forgotten how fantastic this album is. Previously I only had the CD on the '87 'Exhibition' Tubeway Army/Dance combo and didn't listen to it often because it doesn't have all the tracks and because it is difficult to start my car CD player[2] after the TA tracks. I do have the album on vinyl, but my turntable is in the loft and its a long way to climb to change sides ;) I have a question regarding the process of remastering that a) I hope hasn't been covered before and b) isn't too dumb... I understand that when recording an album all the tracks (as in components to each song rather than the songs themselves) are recorded to a 'master tape' and that these master tapes are somehow used to cut a master which is then used to 'press' vinyl / CDs. What I don't understand is how these remastered versions can contain more musical information than the original and therefore sound better. Is it newer/flasher equipment or is it down to a particularly skilled engineer tweaking bits? and if so, what bits? and should I feel elated that I am hearing more/better music or cheated that I am actually hearing an engineers 'composition' that may not be what the original artist intended me to hear? What exactly does re-mastering involve? I also got the paperback of PTTA. It should be interesting to read what Gary thinks of himself. Let's see how much it shares with Ray Colemans' biography! ;-D halldj@ihug.co.nz 1./ Messrs Webbon, Malins and Tolva. 2./ For this is where I find most time to listen to Gary because a) I have a 45 min trip to and from work and b) my wife doesn't let me listen to Numan at home. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2000 11:37:03 -0800 From: Pythoness Subject: The Bowie Thing Again To: digest@garynumanfan.nu >"It was a cross-generational artists' conference after David Bowie's club >gig >at London's Astoria. Does this mean that Numan and Bowie were once again in the same room together? Hm. Wonder if they interacted! It's unlikely that Bowie could still regard Numan as much of a threat to his popularity these days. Does anyone know if they've had any (ooh, I want to say "social intercourse," but people have *so* forgotten that "intercourse" means anything except *sexual* intercourse, and I promise you, if I say "social intercourse," I mean SOCIAL intercourse, OK?) (oh, I'm wussing out) interaction since the Notorious Snub of the '80's? Oh, and I guess this is my first post to the new list! Never managed to actually *see* him until 1998 when I caught the Portland show--smallest venue he appeared at, holding about 350 people. To my lasting regret he was too tired to do a meet & greet afterward [[DAMN!!!!]], though I didn't blame him. I found that I could, in fact, recapitulate all my 15-year-old Numania (and drove my bosses crazy). Just had a dream about Gary last night and am wearing my Exile T-shirt (the only Official shirt I own) today. Wore my collector's ;-) Numanews T-shirt to work yesterday and ran into one person who recognized the logo and one who couldn't remember who Perry Newman was, which is about par for the course. I'm single, play Celtic harp, some bass guitar (used to be in an industrial band) and some plain guitar, keep birds (cockatiels) and snakes (corn, king, ball python), not to mention snakefood. I do ceramic sculpture and pottery, bind books, write fiction and poetry, and, of course, work at a grocery because I don't make shit off of art. Glad the list is still here, and I enjoy it, more or less, even when it's a yowling fest.
