I have five vinyl copies, two black, two burnt red, and also a "bright translucent orange" copy.....which I remember at the time was well saught after. I took it to a record fair in Bournemouth(UK) in 1983 (ish) , and a record dealer offered me "Tubeway Blue" as a straight swap.....which I declined as I already had it, then started waving money at me.....he got upto =A380 or =A390 if I remember correctly, but I kept hold of the vinyl, somehow I dont think Id get that kind of cash now...oh well the pleasures of supply and demand!! Talking of which I remember seeing the 7" "Warriors" aeroplane shaped disc at record fairs for over =A325 in the mid 80's. Whats the most anyone has ever paid for a Numan Vinyl? To: Gary Numan I went to visit my daughter today, and she said, conversationally, "Did you see Gary Numan on TV the other night?" "WHAT?????? WHEN????? WHAT PROGRAMME?????" ETC. They reckoned that it was a late-night programme about electronic music, and that The Great Man Himself was being interviewed on small snippets throughout the programme. They just naturally presumed that I would have been alerted via the grapevine. Does anyone know what programme this could have been? The new URL for my Numan site "NumaNet" is http://members.xoom.com/numaniac/ . There will be a special few pages added in the very near future dedicated to our friend Jim Collins who created "The Church of Gary Numan: A Dark Celebration. In typical NumaNet fashion there will be lots of Real Audio samples from this brilliant album of Numan Covers as well as instructions on how to obtain your own copy. Come by soon! Jim's page will be linked from the "Real Covers" section. The auctions close this weekend. All of them are available for their minimum bids (excepting Berserker), which is $2 for a single album, and $5 for a double album. Shipping in the U.S. is $5, but I can ship three records for that price. Search ebay for numan metal lp, then select "view seller's other auctions" to see all of my listings. Thanks, Joel jturner5@earthlink.net ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Feb 2000 13:53:19 -0500 From: "Ken Bryant" Subject: Oldsmobile Commercial To: "Numan Digest" Hello Numanoids! You can view the Oldsmobile commercial that contains a unique version of "Cars". It's about time a car company used that song! Go to http://www.oldsmobile.com then scroll down to "Check out Field and Cars", then click to view the commercials. On the screen you land on, scroll down to "Cars" and click on the size you want to see. You will need the latest version of Quick Time to view it, but it doesn't take long to download and install. It's definitely worth the trouble! NumaNet: http://members.xoom.com/numaniac ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2000 09:20:53 EST From: SteelHanky@aol.com Subject: S.U. Believe me, Gary has the final say on this. Ok, you win. Gary has told you it's ok, both by email and in person. *If* you would have stated this back in Numan digest #5, it may have been settled quietly; why you waited over a month to lay this trump card (Gary's permission) is beyond me, but that was ultimately your call. If you had replied "Because Gary said it was ok!" way back when instead of your evasive chest-beating replies in digests past, I don't believe it would have generated all the bandwidth. Gary said so. You win. You have permission. Sell away. I will no longer bitch about your auctions. You have my word on that, as a legal retard. --- JAD... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2000 16:33:04 +0000 From: Dryad Subject: Sleep By Windows????? I receive E-mail everyday concerning the release of the CD and the video documentary that accompanies the CD. The video is in production now and the Digital Audio Tape (dat) has been sent out for duplication. There certainly are a lot of dedicated Numan fans all over the world, and I am proud to be a part of this community. Special thanks goes to Jim Napier (North American Gary Numan Fan Club) for putting my story and the CD online first. Jim also had the first online review available and has been enormously supportive. I must also express my gratitude to the following people: Robert Eggleston at AFE, Nigel at Dead Heaven, Ken at Numanet, Josh at Dark Alien Light, David at NumanBoy, Stan at Prison Moon, Keith at A Question Of Faith, and Andrew at Photograph. These are very dedicated fans and I know that they put a lot of time and effort into their work on the web. Adding my information on thier sites created extra work for them. For this, I am very grateful. I have sent a copy to Gary Numan himself and to Gemma, his wife. I am anxiously awaiting some word from him regarding the permission to release this tribute on the Internet. I have met Gary and Gemma several times and truly hope that they enjoy the CD enough to say "Yes! Go ahead and release it to the world!" The song list on the CD is as follows: 1) Joe The Waiter 2) I Dream Of Wires 3) Cars 4) Stories 5) Down In The Park 6) A Question Of Faith 7) Dominion Day 8) Love Is Like Clocklaw 9) Metal 10) You Are In My Vision 11) I Still Remember 12) Cars (Jazz Mix) If you are interested, Jim Napier is hosting the 2nd international chat session concerning the CD, video and other information, this Sunday (March 5) at 6PM (Eastern-Standard Time) at his web site North American Gary Numan Fan Club Website. Please join us if you can. I've heard others say the same thing, Laurence, but I think it's terrific. To me it's an obvious reference to 'Blade Runner.' The white hair, the coat, the cold interior... he's posing as the replicant played by Rutger Hauer, Roy Baty. It's the visual accompaniment to the theme of "Time To Die," when he sang from that character's perspective. It's an image that tells a story, like so many of his better covers do. I'll tell you what covers I'm getting tired of. Gary's face in abstraction, like he's a disembodied entity, floating all alone in a studio somewhere. 'Sacrifice' has to be the worst cover for Gary, in my eyes. Black, black, black, with half his face peeking in from the side of the image, almost as if an afterthought. Fantastic album, terrible cover. 'Exile' is more interesting, but again there he is floating divorced from any context. Even 'Berserker' and 'Telekon' carry the same impression, though both of those introduced stylistic imagery that tied their albums together. While I'm musing about 'Sacrifice,' there's a question I've always wanted to pose to the Dige. The impression I have is that Gary first composed the instrumental pieces used in 'The Unborn' and 'Human' and then adapted some of them for 'Outland.' Well, what was the geneology of 'Sacrifice' and 'The Radial Pair?' "Virus" sounds like "Desire" stripped down, "Machine Heart" carries the rhythm from the end of "Pray," and "Kiss Me And Die" obviously is an instrumental "A Question Of Faith." But were these sketches for the full songs, or did he just take out the vocals for the soundtrack? Which came first? "Mission" was used for the intro to 'Dream Corrosion,' so clearly that one was recorded well before the 'Sacrifice' album, but what about the others? Does anybody know about this? love and questions (of faith), Benjamin Iglar-Mobley http://home.earthlink.net/~iglarmobley * * * "Is this your mercy Or sacrifice?" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Feb 2000 07:41:42 -0800 From: awa Subject: time can't heal the "sex skin crawl" To: digest@GaryNumanFan.NU this is so true (all of it). gary numan, at his best, is so good at conveying alienation from the self (the source of all alienation). "i'd love to be like me if i could feel like you" is so apt and so honest. it's as though he likes himself and who he is but he's missing the actual FEELING that (he thinks) one must have in order to transcend and become a new man, something beyond. the same album has "mr. smith" which is just simply an alienation boogie. "time heals nothing, it merely rearranges our memory"--that line always blew away my little numan clique i was in in high school. as a teenager heading into adulthood, what better sums up the experience than that line? brendan colton mentioned beckett in the last digest. numan, even in his late teens when he penned that line about "time," is up there with the greats of "alienation literature." lyrically, numan is up there with syd barrett (who had a similar deadpan voice and a similar deadpan dedication to conveying alienation in his lyrics as deadpan numan). i actually asked gary himself what the "we were liberating river towns and we picked up the sex skin crawl" line was about and he said, "touring." g'day, alec > Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2000 13:07:49 -0600 > From: hartlaub@falcon.tamucc.edu > Subject: You Are In My Vision > To: digest@garynumanfan.nu (Gary Numan) > > Recently, the TikTokMan solicited responses to: > > >"Delicate bodies that decay beneath their clothing > >play cards in an empty house in Paris. > >The wreckage of a hero lies broken in the corner > >and everyone pretends they'd like to live that way." > > I always took these lyrics to mean alienation from the self.
