Mind you, I disagree with Gary when he slates the cover of The Fury! I was intrigued by the image of "Gary as a lounge lizard"! The best cover is Beserker, then Replicas. Telekon is BAD! On this subject, however, I'm sure that different regions worldwide have different covers. Certainly, I have now acquired all Numan albums on CD with the additional tracks on one form or another. The re-releases of Beserker, Fury and Strange Charm now use different artwork from the originals (in the UK at least). Obviously he was looking far too pleased with himself previously. At least the original is on the back of the booklet so you can alternate them to suit your current interpretation of Gary's attitude. Thank goodness for you people >out there. I thought that was interesting. My kids (6, 8, 10) like "Remember I was Vapour" the best, which is kind of an odd choice. My daughter loves the line "Remember I need oxygen"! They're intrigued by "Cry, the Clock Said", but only because they can't believe a song doesn't have any singing for the first five minutes. After my son heard that, he checked his Backstreet Boys CD and found the longest intro to be only :45 (as I recall). Like Gary P.'s son, however, they're not crazy about the rest of the catalogue either. Let's just say I've heard more than a few times, "Dad's listening to Gary Numan again!" -Mark "We're dreams in cold storage" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 03 Mar 2000 22:53:25 -0500 (EST) From: "Michael Rowe" Subject: Gary Numan Digest V2 #17 To: "Gary Numan" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Top 5 excluding Numan - HMMMMM. To: digest@GaryNumanFan.NU Gary Perkins wrote last digest: "Nice to hear some good news. Thanks for sharing it and I hope Gregory is enjoying Slowcar." Thanks for the message, Gary. I haven't played Slowcar for him yet. He seems to really like Enya, understandably. But I'll get some Numan tunes on for him and his older brother (by 11 months!) soon. Oh, and I loved your song title: I Diaper: You Diaper. I nearly laughed out loud! A quick Telekon story: Back in high school, 1982 I think, some students and I were in art class, just bullshitting about music. One of the kids was a "metal-head" (long hair, wore black t-shirts with AC/DC on them every day, etc.), and out of the blue he tells us, "This is going to sound funny, but you know who's really cool? Gary Numan." I flipped! I almost yelled "I love Gary Numan!" He said his favorite song was the one where he just says You Are, You Are. I of course told him that was the song Telekon. Imagine That. A rock guy who liked Gary. I was the opposite; I became a big rock fan several years after being into Gary. And here's a good excuse to segway into another subject... Cleopatra records (you know... Gary's label) has put out a Van Halen tribute album that is moderately Numanesque. Now, I know that we all would never dream of seeing the words Van Halen and Numanesque in the same sentence, but it's true. I guess they got various rock singers and bands to contribute covers of VH songs, and then had someone do techno-remixes of them. Most of the songs are pretty cool. They're a little more on the techno side than if Gary himself had done the remixes, but certain subtleties in some of the songs remind me of Gary. If any VH fans out there are interested, the CD is called Hot For Remixes. And speaking of VH, there were a couple of things they've done that were a little Numanish. "Sunday Afternoon In The Park" is a very dark and sinister sounding instrumental, heavy on keyboards. They tried the same thing with "Intruder" but didn't pull it off quite as well. And lastly, a recent kick-ass instrumental (i'm noticing a pattern here) called Baluchitherum has about a minute or so at the end of the song that sounds very Gary (that Dance-style percussion), with various guitar sound effects thrown in. I'm sure nobody cares. Just want to point out that I hear alot of Numan-like qualities in other peoples music. Lastly, since I'm on the subject, does any one else out there HATE the fact that rock radio stations will play "Mama" by Genesis but would laugh at the suggestion of playing something by Gary? To me, that song could have been written and recorded by the man himself. Anyone agree? I've wanted to do a list of other songs that sound like Gary, and Mama would be #1 on it. Sorry about the long post. That'll happen i guess when you don't get on the computer very often. In response to James Chapman's post on naming five favorite musical artists other than Numan, here are mine: Alphaville Thomas Dolby Beethoven Peter Gabriel Elvis Later, Ken "The Numaniac" Bryant NumaNet: http://members.xoom.com/numaniac ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Mar 2000 18:39:04 -0600 From: Dave Carlson Subject: New film with Numan interview To: "'digest@garynumanfan.nu'" Film Threat Weekly : 02-28-00 : Take 8 http://www.filmthreat.com/Reviews.asp?File=ReviewsOne.asp&Id=158 SLAMDANCE FILM FESTIVAL REVIEWS: SEARCHING FOR ROGER TAYLOR * * * 1/2 The names read like a veritable Who's Who of 80's music. Gary Numan. Stewart Copeland ("The Police"). Tony Hadley ("Spandau Ballet"). Jerry Casale ("DEVO"). Anabella Irwin ("Bow Wow Wow"). It is from these and other surprisingly interesting and informative interviews that director Aaron Barnett turns a personal quest -- meeting reclusive former rock idol Roger Taylor of "Duran Duran" -- into a remarkable musical retrospective encompassing the entire decade of the 80's. Long dismissed as a sort of musical black hole, lost between the "Classic Rock" of the 70's and the Grunge/Alternative movement of the 90's, the 80's are here restored to all their fashion conscious glory. "Searching..." explains the sometimes tortured evolution of New Wave; how such British glamrock bands as "Duran Duran" and their American counterparts in the New Romantic movement sprouted from the crass anarchy of the punk movement. It chronicles how, fueled by the nascent and, at the time oft-ridiculed promotional device known as the "music video," these bands in some cases literally went on to overnight stardom, only to crash in a flaming pile of indifference and changing musical tastes. The best part about this film was getting to see clips from some classic music videos I haven't seen since the embryonic days of "Night Tracks." Most of the musicians are surprisingly eloquent in recalling their salad days. The film treads water, however, when it conveys their scathing opinions about the corporate culture pervading today's music industry. Though few will disagree with these veterans' commentaries, the film too easily de-evolves into a has-been bitch session. "Searching for Roger Taylor" makes it easy for old classic rockers such as myself to gain a whole new appreciation for the music that marked our post-high school years, as well as for the pioneers we wanted on our MTV. Even the ever-reclusive Mr. Taylor himself. - Merle Bertrand Dave e-mail: carlsond@dpg.devry.edu ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Mar 2000 13:43:51 -0000 From: Matthew Tamea Subject: ooo fatty To: "'Numan Digest'" Check it out...has Gaz got so fat that he's now having to tuck himself in? http://www.waspcreations.com/numan.htm ...or maybe there's just something he's not telling us! For some reason ever since, most of the Numan Digests I receive have to be rescued from the trash. Makes one think, doesn't it? On another thread, I have to politely disagree with Valerie Iglar-Mobley's feelings about the Sacrifice cover art. I have always thought it was one of Numan's best covers. I thought it fit the spirit and the feeling of the CD perfectly. In fact, that's one album cover I would love to have a poster made of. If I had to cast my vote for worst cover art, it would have to be either Ghost or any one of those umpteen best of CDs like Here I Am or The Best Of... Also, an entry for Mr. Chapman's survey.
