It's great to see the generation who grew up loving 80's music finally in a position of power to do something about it being recognized. I'm sure Roger Taylor would be suprised to know that there's a film out there referring to him in the title! It's also really interesting to see Gary fans list their other 5 favorite groups. I saw Thomas Dolby's name mentioned a few times - it seems to me that the two songs that most capture what was so incredibly unique and fun about 80's top music were Cars and She Blinded Me with Science. The song is called "Crystal Japan" (awesome title) and is listed as a Japanese single-A version 1979. The song is instrumental but is incredibly cool and everytime I listen to it I think of Bladerunner. It just has this great atmosphere to it. I thought this was relevant due to both Bowie's and Numan's fascinations with Japan. It's hardly fair of y'all to have a thread about my favorite Numan song when I wasn't around to join in! I spent most of the month either being sick or looking after my 90-year-old Dad (who had a heart attack the day I got out of the hospital, where I spent two days with severe asthma. We're both all better now, thanks) and got home to a LOT of email. Anyway. YAIMV was the first Numan song I heard of, let alone heard (my first boyfriend typed up the lyrics and handed them to me w/o comment; I assumed he'd written them, actually), as well as the first song I learned on both guitar and bass (as all long-term members of this list know, mes apologies)--so it has a lot of sentimental value as well as being, IMO, still a really wonderful elegantly simple and strangely poignant and eloquent song. Ahem. I always loved the verse under discussion. . . I think I interpreted it thus. "Delicate bodies that decay beneath their clothing" means basic mortality: we're all decaying, under the "clothing" that we wear to pretend we're not--death under a mask of life. "Play cards in an empty house in Paris"--never attached any special meaning to Paris, except that it sounds good--a cosmopolitan city, known for its attachment to carnal pleasure; as for the cards, hmm, I have a strong visual. (In fact, I have a tendency to love lyrics or poetry and never try to dissect it or analyze it--I often found a poem completely dead after being forced to pick it apart in literature classes). "The wreckage of a hero lies broken in the corner/ And everyone pretends they'd like to live that way"--we tend to idolize people and forget they're mere people; I've seen a lot of famous people of different persuasions qualify for the "wreckage" title, as have we all, victims of drugs, drink, ego, what-have-you--and everyone *does* pretend they want to live that way, don't they? So today is Gary's 42nd birthday, making him TWICE AS OLD AS HE WAS WHEN I STARTED LISTENING TO HIS MUSIC, which I find *a little alarming,* but then isn't it strange how times change? Naturally, as is my custom, I celebrated. I can't play music at work anymore, but I did wear my Exile shirt, and, to draw attention to it, a flamboyant bellydancer choker and tight black jeans. Had fun explaining to all and sundry that it was Gary Numan's birthday (work in a very cool grocery and get to blab to customers who think I'm fascinating anyway, due to my decorative eccentricity). Ran into the usual three people who remembered "Cars," one person who had him confused with Klaus Nomi, one person who had jammed with him while stranded in a New York airport (a fellow named Gary Justice, which rings a faint bell; moving back to the area), and the usual two people who thought I meant Randy Newman. ("Are they related?" one asked when I had explained.) I used to use the day as something special; twelve years ago I spent the day lamenting my loss of innocence (Gary at 30 seemed to exemplify same); eleven years ago it was my Day of Despond; ten years ago I spent the day allowing myself to feel as jaded as I wanted to--etc. Two years ago I celebrated my rebirth of innocence, last year I entirely forgot his birthday (!) and this year, heck, I just celebrated twenty-one years of Gary. Hoo-hah. Silly, aren't I? :-) So now I'm gonna go do dishes and listen to the old albums that I can hardly bear anymore, NOT because I don't like the music but because the emotional freight they carry is rather overwhelming. The quality on the CD is significantly better, presumably because of the digital remastering techniques employed. However, there are a couple of differences that I have noticed - maybe i'm just being fussy. Firstly, the original LP version that I own is alot bassier (bassier is that a word) - i.e the drums are alot heavier - there is more oomph. Also the drum tone is different - for example if you listen to "The Dream Police" on both CD and LP you'll notice the difference is quite significant. I like the way the songs Bombers/Remember I was Vapour/On Broadway roll into each other - with the drum machine tinkering away in the background. I think that this full version of Living Orn. '79 is excellent - I still think this album is one of the best live albums that he has recorded. In my humble opinion the LP copy has more of a live feel than the CD. The album contains the earliest live version of 'Are Friends Electric?' that i've ever heard. I guess that you can't get much earlier than LO '79. This version is my favourite live version of AFE as normally I believe this song is done "sing-along" style rather than "a la replicas" style. Does anybody out there agree/disagree with me? I would be interested in your comments. I have read a couple of accounts/transcriptions of the Sky One interview and I can't believe that Gary is now openly stating that he wants to be 'free' from his current commitments and is looking at setting up a small independent Internet label. OK, Eagle haven't been exactly great to date, but how can Gary hope for them to throw their full support behind him if he doesn't show some enthusiasm? The best he can hope for is that they'll actually press the new albums. Distribution? don't expect Eagle to spend much time and money Gazza, you're not exactly a big earner for them anyway, except for the back catalogue, which they already seem to be doing a good job of selling with or without your help. On the 'Internet' label front, I know Gary is a few years wiser since Numa, but the only real way of selling CDs is to get them promoted in stores (either retail or e-tail) and you don't get that kind of promotion, especially internationally, without some backing. Without promotion, airplay etc ... you're only likely to get hard-core fans buying albums, which should mean that a 2 speed CD burner should keep up with production requirements or why not e-mail the tracks out attached to the digest?. (tomorrow never knows)" sounds so much like something numan would do! i can't place what song it is but it's something like the end of "we are glass" or "i'm an agent." can someone who's heard this record help me out on this one? overall, that album is pretty numanesque. come to think of it, the original version on the beatles "revolver" is pretty numan in mood. speaking of little kids and numan, my nephew was so into my numan LP and singles collection that when he was in grammar school he wrote a story that was inspired by "call out the dogs" and got high marks on it as i recall. he'd wear make up and slick back his hair but for some reason all the other little kids thought it was cool. he was also pretty heavily into john foxx. times changed quickly for him and not too long after that brief era he started listening to madonna and then lita ford (of all people!). after that it was van halen. he was in a hendrix cover band by the time he reached high school. he became a deadhead for two years, enjoying fully everything that went along with that, before turning into an ultra-conservative rush limbaugh type. now, he looks like a low rider but with died pink hair. he says he still listens to numan! hmmmm....... in the '90s, my girlfriend at the time had an 8-year-old daughter, a real alice in wonderland type, who would spontaneously perform a little kid stomping dance whenever she heard me listening to "new thing from london town." she would sing along with it and her performance looked and sounded very much like little robot. along with that, she would play the videotape that had that particular track on it and sit transfixed joining in on the "new thing from london town" part. she was very careful to insert the appropriate pause-between-words deadpan delivery--which was pretty magical sounding coming from a small child's voice. it would give me the chills to be honest. i felt like i was doing my part to train the youth. in what? numan appreciation? i think she really identified with the evil-looking little robot in the video. he made her giggle as she would mime his goose-stepping. scary. oh well, i'm pretty sure at least it made her re-think barbie. yours in numan enthusiasm, alec ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 05 Mar 2000 09:50:09 -0500 From: Matt Hazlinsky Subject: top 5 To: digest@GaryNumanFan.NU Hello all, thought I would chime in on some of the topics being discussed. It seems like a lot of people have been dissing the Telekon cover. I think it is great. I like the minimalistic qualities of the cover. I would think that if someone were to see it in a store they would be intrigued to find out what the music sounded like(that is if they had never listened to Gary before). The Sacrifice and Exile covers are pretty cool but I would have liked Gary to change it up a bit in that they both have that "dark" theme to them. I know the music is dark on both the albums but if you look at both of them they don't really stand out. I like the cover of The Plan, Beserker, Telekon. I never really liked the 1940's image on the other albums that much but i guess it's pretty cool. My top 5 other bands: Tears for Fears Suede Morrissey New Order/Depeche Mode OMD/Durutti Column As you can see I like pretty much any New Wave band. I can't let it pass. I thought NuWorld was supposed to exist partly to allow people new to Numan's music to get more information. Not a good place to have a go at your fans, then... What is the casual reader going to think? By publicly sniping at the two or three out of several thousand fans, he's painting a very dim view of his fanbase... which reflects on him as much as his fans. I was as disappointed as anyone else about the slipping of the release date, but I saw it coming. The progress reports were more lack of progress reports, really. He missed his original release slot, so he had to get the next available one. He's not the only artist on Eagle, so no surprise it went back to September, really. So, any speculation about Gary having planned it in advance is somewhat fanciful and not worth getting steamed up about. The real reasons why the album's late are as follows: (1) The Rezzna (TM) plug-in for the Numan Lyric Generator software (we all know it exists) has had initial teething troubles. (2) Gary's taken up gardening and is now using the shed that used to house his studio to grow chrysanthemums. (3) Gary's spending all his time trying to get 100% on the AFENet Numan quiz. (4) Now Ali G. has made Staines famous, Gary has decided to rediscover his roots and re-invent himself as the godfather of the Staines techno scene. Trouble is, he can't quite afford the clothes and jewellery, so he's got to save up for a while yet. (5) I'm deliberately sabotaging every step of the recording process through telekinesis because the expectation is always so much better than the event. Or something. Oh yes, top 5. I guess these people's music is taking up more space in my CD collection than anyone else.
