Rex Joan Jett Michael Hedges Also, I had the privilege to meet Nick Beggs, former Kajagoogoo bassist and writer who worked with Gary on OUTLAND, this week. He is on tour with former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, who has a remarkable new solo album (ZOOMA) to promote. Nick was resplendent in a black mesh top and kilt, playing Chapman Stick. Until I got there I didn't know he was in the band, so it was a fantastic surprise. I have always been fascinated by the Chapman Stick, and by all accounts Nick is one of its true masters. He downplayed this somewhat: when I asked him how long ago he had first mastered the instrument, he laughed and said, "Every day is a new experience with this thing, I'm not sure it CAN be mastered." GREAT show: catch it if you can! JPJ and company are rocking hard, with emphasis on groove. And expect some BLISTERING pedal steel slide work. (www.johnpauljones.com for tour info....cool site as well!) I got Nick's autograph and a picture with him (will let you know when posted), and asked him about his time with Gary. He had nothing but good to say, and also mentioned that he wouldn't mind working with him again. Given Gary's general bad experience with bassists, maybe Nick was one he had referred to, but if so Nick wasn't letting on. He was friendly and relaxed, a real pleasure to both meet and watch onstage. I got some great pictures I believe, and will keep all updated on their posting soon. As for Gary's new "sod you all" attitude......part of his appeal, and frustration as well, has always been that he has never done things "by the book". That includes schmoozing more than most artists with fans, and withdrawing deeper when it gets too close. If Gary were like everyone else, half his mystique would be gone. And let's face it: no matter what we believe, or what we say, he's gonna do what he wants his way. Rock on, Gary. Funny how favorites go in streaks. For a while, before Sacrifice came out, I hadn't listen to much Numan for some time. I bought the "new dreams for old" compilation CD, which was sort of hard to justify as I try to avoid buying things I already own in one way or another. It's fun to listen to though... METAL '98 is one i hadn't heard before and is a pretty cool redo, and NEW THING FROM LONDON TOWN sounds better than I've ever heard it before. The track I STILL REMEMBER is the one Gary did for the RSPCA, which I hadn't heard in years. It's also has some great notes and pics in the insert, along with one of my favorites on the back page -- the single eyeball shot. OOOO that's scary.... What I did not like is CALL OUT THE DOGS, and MY DYING MACHINE, and for that matter CARS, which seem to be on every release that isn't a new album that Gary puts out. I guess I can understand CARS, but what is so great about the other two? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 08:25:53 EST From: Zerfboy@aol.com Subject: please add to list To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Please add me to the mailing list. I have been more of a viewer of the digest than a contributor lately, but as I am seeing other's top 5 lists I thought I would add mine to the mix 1. Enigma 2. London After Midnight 3. Pink Floyd 4. Theater of Tragedy 5. Berlin (luv that 80's rock!) Now a Numan related subject. A few years ago there was a cd with different interpretations of "Stairway to Heaven" called, I believe, Stairways to Heaven. I have total respect for Gary Numan's talent, but am getting really sick of Cars. You call the local radio station and ask for something other then Cars and all you get is silence. Has anyone thought of doing a tribute (there are already millions of tribute cds out there so what is another one going to hurt) to Cars. Everything from country {gasp}to big band, and heavy metal to classical versions of the song. Yes, I noticed that I said I'm getting sick of Cars yet am asking for a tribute cd for it.
