If you listen to "The Hunter", probably only the extended version - I can't remember, towards the very end of the song you can hear a very deep, monster-like voice saying something in the background. Now, one day long ago, I was duplicating the Berserker Extended cassette since I didn't own it and a friend did, er...I mean I was making an archive backup...yeah, that's it. Anyway, I had the tape deck set to "High-Speed Dub" mode. Since "The Hunter" was the last track I popped on the headphones to gauge when it was finished so I could stop the tape at the appropriate time. The lyrics were flying by fast and furious in chipmunk-like fashion as you would expect on high-speed dub, when out of nowhere and in one of the creepiest moments of my life comes Gary Numan's voice, completely natural and at the exact proper speed, saying "Something's Wrong". That monster voice is in fact Gary singing "Something's Wrong" slowed down to the exact speed necessary to be perfectly natural when played back at high-speed mode. Now, I don't know if that was intentional or not, but it is quite freakish when experienced. Try it for fun! BTW, my top five non-Numan artists are: 1) Ultravox/Ure/Foxx/Visage 2) Devo 3) a-ha 4) Adam (and the) Ant(s) 5) Nik Kershaw ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2000 12:43:48 +1100 From: Bart Tieman Subject: Alphaville To: "'digest@garynumanfan.nu'" Hi I'm glad to see there are a few other Alphaville fans amongst us Numanoids. On the subject of Alphaville. I was reading the booklet to the Dreamscapes box set and in it was a few short stories by the singer Marian Gold. In one of them was this line that stopped me dead. "A tour poster of Tubeway Army hung in the twilight of the living room". He touches on it again with: "Marian stared at the tour poster. He thought of packed arenas, trips to far off countries, T.V. appearances etc". Does this mean he is a Numan fan as well? Any other Alphaville fans that can shed a bit more light on this? To: digest@garynumanfan.nu Well, this time I'll be replying to Cary's survey - fave song + 2 Runners up. 1. We Take Mystery (To Bed) 12" - MUST be the 12"! I always loved this track because it's upbeat, dancey but without being light and fluffy, got great lyrics, fretless bass, synth sound, the lot, but then the extended version has that extra verse which is a great variation, and that twiddly synth bit which is very entertaining. I'm praying that it's on the I, Assassin reissue. 2. I Die: You Die (would be #1 if only regular versions were allowed) 3. Metal (original version) Cheerz James ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Mar 2000 14:07:35 EST From: Heymikee5@aol.com Subject: Another Top 5 To: digest@garynumanfan.nu My top 5, in no particular order, at least as of this morning: 1. Topics have been good. Favorite album cover? Replicas - I have a framed 3'x3'-ish poster of it (Complete with ripped nose) hanging in my front room. Fave top 5 non-Numan bands? the damned, t rex, devo, kraftwerk, MC5. Also, if anyone can find the Rentals CD (guy from Weezer with moog) it's excellent. One song even quotes Numan "It's just like when Gary Numan said, you're so cold and distant...". I got my web site up with a few Numan links (http://www.geocities.com/lbartdesign). Met a guy who was amused by my Numan obsession, and the piano/synth player that he is whipped out his own version of "Cars" using ReBirth and burned it onto a CD for me. Awwww... but I had to correct him titling it "In Cars". He is currently searching for a red or blue SH-101 with mod grip so if anyone knows where he can find one, email me. Checked out gemm.com's used Numan listing - I couldn't believe they wanted $65 for a used Random CD set! Got mine used for $13. Can't wait to hear the new Kraftwerk. Oh, and Rick from DC is heading my way in May so hopefully there will be a Numan meeting in Providence (yeah, I actually watch that damn show on NBC on Fridays - it makes the place look so nice!!!). We have a Technical- to me this is a culmination of all that is great about Gary's music. Everything just comes together on this one song, great synth, great beat, great song. To me some songs are magical and this is one of them. 2. Films- ok, i think i can say that this song has the most incredible drums on it along with a great bass line. Together, they make this song so powerful it just blows my mind. 3. this is the hardest pick. Its hard to think of another Numan song that stands out like the other two. Im left to choose from an incredible collection of awesome songs. However, I knew my third fav song would be on the Dance album as that is my fav Numan album. It came down to either "A Subway Called you" or "Stormtrooper in drag"(yes i know it wasnt originally on the album). Although i love the liquid bass of Mick Karn on Subway i went with Stormtrooper. Just a great song, great bass and a great tune overall. This is the kind of song i pop in the car stereo and feel like I am in a movie or something. Looking forward to other people's choices. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2000 16:27:19 -0600 From: "D. May/ZMP LTD." To: digest@garynumanfan.nu (Gary Numan) My god, thought I'd get a hart attack. Someone mentioned Mylene Farmer in his top 5. Couldn't believe it. She is (together with Alphaville I have to say) my absolute second favorite artist. I went to her concert in Brussels last October, and thought I've seen the female Numan. The show was like in Gary's early days with loads of effects, ellevators, light show surprises etc. So here's mine 1. Mylene Farmer / Alphaville 2. John Foxx 3. Ultravox (till Lament, plus Midge ure's first 2 solo albums) 4. Roger Waters 5. Pink Floyd All after Numan off course. Then again, ask me in 2 weeks and my top 5 will be different again. Which Album of his do they identify with the most and why. Personally, the image that I identify with the most is probably the Dance / I Assassin era. This era saw Numan enter the stage as the '30s Humphrey Bogart styled gangster complete with Twead suit, Trilby and Moccasins. This was completed with the introduction of the Fretless Bass, and the Soulful "woe is me" melodies that reflect the life of the '30s gangster. Slowcar to China sets the scene and introduces us to the Gangster's world. To me, My Brother's Time describes the ups and downs of the gangster - the trappings, the money, his moll, prostitution, drugs, alchol, prohibition. Another reason why Dance, stands out for me is that it is the only Numan record that i 've ever bought on it's day of release. Numan's absorption of himself into these characters, i.e gangster, robot, warrior (mad max style) show me he is head and shoulders above his contempories in terms of creativity and complexity. Long Live Numan! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Mar 2000 20:00:27 GMT From: "James Chapman" Subject: Periods... To: digest@garynumanfan.nu Last digest, Derek submitted his top 5 but only alloed these within ceratin periods. I know I agree in a way, as I picked David Bowie mainly on the strength of Station to Station, Low, Heroes, and Scary Monsters. I also had Kraftwerk on my list, even though I thought their pre-Autobahn stuff was er... a bit weird! Likewise Tangerine Dream (a disapponting lack of votes) earliest stuff is a bit dodgy and their vintage period is 1979-84 - in a 30 year carreer. I also picked Talk Talk even though I only have their first 3 albums and A Sides Besides. Of Course Mr Numan IS #1. I wonder if that applies to eveyone? He hasn't really had a bad "period" - even though I could just do with the 1979-88 albums (each one was SO different) plus Sacrifice (the only 90s Numan album to be very different from its predecessor. However every other album but The Plan (sorry) has its moments. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Mar 2000 11:14:37 -0800 From: "chuck" Subject: Re numan favs and soundtracks, get out of my head To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Fav soundtracks no order: Natural Born Killers The Crow Lost Highways Last Action Hero Hell Raiser ( the orchestral set ) As for my favorite Gary tune, I know this sounds like a cop out but there are too many to pick from! I could say that the first Gary tune I ever heard and identified as Gary was You Walk In My Soul, it's from the american release of Sacrifice called Dawn. The art from the cd is one of my favorite artists, ergo I bought the cd and became a forever fan of Gary's. From there I bought Exile and then Telekon, and then ordered Machine and Soul, The Fury, Strange Charm and several others. Right now Telekon gets the award for most played disk, while Outland is my newest. I also have a copy of Tubeway army, Everday I Die is an awesome tune! Like I said way to much to choose from, with tunes like The Joy Circuit, Im An Agent, Down in the Park,Sleep by Windows, Are Friends Electric, This Wreckage, Stormtrooper in Drag, Cold Warning, A Question of Faith, Scar, Exile, Dead Heaven, Listen to the Sirens and the many others I am sure I haven't mentioned. Gary Just kicks ass! No two ways about it, he has a song for every moment in my day. Oh and as a recomendation, if you don't have a copy of Random yet give it a listen. Gravity Kills does a rendition of Poetry and Power that has cuased me to receive two speeding tickets, to bad the officer wasn't a Gary fan. Last word: whoever asked about the sample at the end of Generator from Machine and Soul, get out of my head! I read your post just as the sample played and it gave me a chill. One of A.S.'s team says "You're ghostin' us mother-fucker. I don't care who you are back in the real world, you give our position one more time, I'll bleed you - real quiet - and leave you here.. got that!" followed by a later line "payback time".
