Gary has stated in the 80's, "I can't stand Marc Almond" and Marc in the 80's has said similar things. But Marc Almond was well known for slagging off everyone during the 80's from Boy George to Jimmy Somerville (classic quote - Jimmy Sommervile - "Marc Almond should do more for the gay community" Marc - "Jimmy is right, I should do more for the community. I should strangle Jimmy Sommerville.") I think what needs to be remembered with Marc Almond is that during the height of his career he was probably slagged off as much if not more than Gary Numan by not only the music press but people on the street, and he had a huge drug problem. This is all documented in Marcs fantastic autobiography "Tainted Life" - which has several references to Numan, none of them negative. (They mainly list him as an artist Marc used to play a lot of when he was a DJ) Thee is also the fact that both Marc and Gary make completely different music, both now broadly labelled as goth in most record shops which categorise music - but nothing alike. I think this is why I like them both pretty much equally, because it is difficult to draw parralels between the music of the two apart from the dark qualities of both artists output and the use of synthesisers. Just my opinion... Anti I am a poseur and I don't care, I like to make people stare! On 'Coochie' Gary says: "It's the first time I've been on Radio 1 since I can remember, that's fo= r sure - normally on by birthday they play something. It's alright actually... someone sent me an e-mail saying someone's done a dance mix o= f 'Cars' and I just thought, 'Oh bollocks! An impossible question of course, but is the Cars riff the most remunerative 5 notes ever written? On Shatner's version: "That's my fucking career done. In a nice way, I might as well quit now; that's the bollocks. I'm a right Star Trek fan - Captain Kirk doing one o= f your songs - what could be a better accolade than that? He said Gary only had one top 40 hit in the U.S., and he didn't even know if it made the top ten. In fact, "Cars" is the only Gary Numan song to have even entered Billboard's Hot 100 single chart, and yes, it did crack the top ten. "Cars" peaked at #9 in March of 1980. jerry v ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2000 09:15:32 -0700 From: Mark Subject: Gary Numan Digest V2 #31 To: Gary Numan Paddy wrote: "but what about Time To Die Noise Noise Rumour Trois Gyms etc!!!!!" I include it for those with only Email access. It took place prior to the London gig and has a very interesting slant on what Gary now thinks of his fans: Music365 tracked the Numanoid to his UK rehearsal studios this week. Music365: Are you all set for Saturday's concert? Gary Numan: "Yeah, rehearsals started on Monday. It's the same band I've been using for a while though, so there's not that much work to do, really. You must have released a new album every year for the best part of two decades. How do you decide which tracks to use? "(Laughs) It's not easy. A lot of it picks itself, fortunately. There was a period in the '80s when I was using a lot of saxophone and a fretless base which I no longer have so there's about 11 album's worth of material I can't use anyway. It's inevitable that I can't please everybody, though. I'm bound to disappoint somebody somewhere! Your fans can verge a bit on the obsessive judging from some of the web-sites dedicated to you.... "That's just a very small minority who do seem unfortunately to be very vocal. Most of my fans just buy the album or come along to a concert and then go home after hopefully enjoying it. Ultimately if you feel the need to write to me and ask why I didn't play a certain track or feel compelled to tell me what you think of an album then sorry but you've taken it a bit too far." Do you still get a big crowd of Numan look-a-likes at your live shows? "Not so much anymore. Ever since Marilyn Manson and Billy Corgan have been namechecking me in interviews as an influence my audience has got a whole lot younger. Some of the Manson kids turn up in their leather gear and black contact lenses and they look ****' great!" Is that the kind of stuff you listen to now, the Industrial Metal scene? "Yeah, definitely. In my mind Trent Reznor is the closest thing we've got to a musical genius. There's a whole underground scene out there that can sell out large venues without any help whatsoever from radio or TV and that can only be good. It's similar to when 'Are 'Friends' Electric' broke through for me; it was Number One for two weeks before it got any airplay from Radio1!" What stuff were you into as a kid? "First of all it was The Monkees. I remember miming along to them as a kid although I don't think that they were that much of an influence in the long run! My first real hero was Marc Bolan... T-Rex." Do you think that the Bowie comparisons you got were a bit facile? "I can see why they were made. We were both from the same part of the country with vaguely similar voices. What we really shared though was a strong sense of the visual and the creating of new characters and reinvention. People had done that before Bowie though and they're still doing it now. Manson is the perfect contemporary example of that." The Armand Van Helden track 'Koochie' that heavily samples 'Cars' has been tipped by Pete Tong to go straight in at Number One. What do you think ofit? "Well, I'm not the biggest dance fan in the world so my first reaction on learning about it was, 'Oh shit!' (laughs) It really could have been terrible but now I've heard it I think it's a really good re-working. I was only aware of him through the remix he'd done on Tori Amos but yeah I think he's done a great job. More publicity for me as well!" Liking Gary Numan doesn't seem to be such a big dirty secret these days. Why do you think that is? "I think a lot of it's to do with the 'Random' tribute album a couple of years ago when people like Trent and Courtney Love covered my stuff. It introduced my music to a whole new generation that may not have been aware of me before. "People started to concentrate on what really mattered and not all that baggage which I seemed to accumulate during my 'tabloid' years. My biggest crime was always in being too honest. There were a lot of hypocrites out there who were saying all the right things but living their lives as a total contradiction to that. My dad always told me just to be myself and it's what I've always tried to subscribe to." I read recently that you auditioned for The Jam before you were famous... "Yeah (laughs) I'm convinced I did. It was a three-piece band in Woking anyway - where The Jam were from - and they were toying with the idea of taking on a fourth member. I turned up with my guitar and a whole host of effects pedals without which I was useless - I'm still not the greatest guitarist in the world! So I plugged in and let rip with this racket before they very quickly told me to stop and cut the pedals. Needless to say I failed the audition!! I saw them on TV a few months later and I was like, '**** me, it's them!!' They were quite distinctive looking blokes so I'm pretty sure it was Weller and the boys!" So you could have ended up in The Style Council, then?"Yeah, I suppose so!" A lot of your websites seem VERY preoccupied with the actual date that your new album's due out. Any clues? "It's been put back to September by the record company. Some people have convinced themselves that I've deviously delayed it myself for some reason. God knows why because it's **** my tour plans up and it means I go a bit longer without any money coming through! That's one of the drawbacks of the Internet, unfortunately. Anybody can post a total lie up that then takes on some credence and I have to end up denying a load of bollocks. That's one thing that does piss me off but what can you do?" Can people expect all the hits at Shepherd's Bush? "Yeah. I went through a phase of being quite reluctant to play them but I'm more comfortable with the whole thing now. You've got to recognise that that's why a lot of people have come to see you. I'll mess about the arrangements a bit just to keep them fresh, though. I've never believed in nostalgia for nostalgia's sake." So there's no danger of you turning into the new Gary Glitter then? "(Laughs) Definitely not!!!" I wish I could've been there. While we're waiting for the tour to start for real, and for the TWENTIETH GARY ALBUM, I thought I'd propose a poll for us here on the Dige akin to the album poll James Chapman ran. I know we've been talking about songs and b-sides we like, but I'd like to really pull together what the preferences are among the body of the tubeway soldiers for the songs Gary has done. And I know there've been song polls on various web sites, but not all of us have visited and submitted to all of those polls. I thought James' polling about preferences among the albums was very informative; I've shared those results with quite a few new numanoids. I think a poll here of favorite songs could also be interesting, just to see what shows up. Here's what I'd like anyone who's willing to partake to do. I'd like a list of what your top 20 favorite Gary songs are. As an example here are mine: 1) The Joy Circuit 2) We Have A Technical 3) The Angel Wars 4) A Question Of Faith 5) I Die: You Die 6) Down In The Park 7) Metal 98 8) We Are Glass 9) The Skin Game 10) I'm An Agent 11) My Breathing 12) Thoughts No. 2 13) Complex 14) Cry The Clock Said 15) Berserker 16) Call Out The Dogs 17) Check It 18) Listen To The Sirens 19) Strange Charm 20) Cold Metal Rhythm . . . When everyone who wants to participate has offered their lists, I'll post what the final results are of what are the most loved Gary compositions and in what order. A few points I should probably mention: I'll assign weights to the song lists based on where they fall in a given list-- #1 getting "weighted" the most to #20 the least-- to reflect those songs going from most to lesser favorites. Although... Songs can be listed as tied in a list. Just in case you can't decide whether "Bridge? What Bridge?" is really preferable to "Puppets." In the case of tied songs, they'll get assigned the same "weight." An entire list can be submitted as tied, or "in no particular order." This is just in case you can't decide at all which songs you prefer over which, though you know what ones you want up there. (Though giving them in order is more information to work with.) Yes, you can list songs Gary's done with Bill Sharpe or Hugh Nicholson in your list of faves (if you're brave enough to admit that). You can list less than 20; they'll still count as much as the top (however many) of anyone else's list. You can list more than 20, but I'll only be able to count your first 20, just so that no one's list will factor in more heavily than anyone else's. [I had to cut it off SOMEwhere, and 20 per entry I think is about the limit for manageability.] You can either post them to the Digest here, if you feel like sharing with everybody, or you can e-mail me privately at: mailto:iglarmobley@earthlink.net?subject=my_top_20_fave_Garys. This is just in case you don't want anyone to know you were the one to pick "1999" as your #1 favorite Gary song. (Or, you know, if you don't want to clutter the Digest.) * * * I hope some of you are willing to give this a whirl. I think it could be quite interesting.
