Thought i'd do DitP this time around. Here's my short reviews: 1. Christian Death (The Iron Mask) - recorded live in what sounds like a garage in front of an audience of 2. I actually really like this one. 2. Faith & Disease (GoaWFC) - Pretty good one, and the only one i have with female vocals (a plus). 3. Foo Fighters (Songs in the Key of X) - Good rock version. I also a live version i snagged from andy mchaffie off napster. That one is terrible. 4. Girls Under Glass (Nightmares) - Fairly straight cover version, the line of the final two verses are repeated here. Not bad. 5. Marilyn Manson (Lunchbox EP) - My favorite DitP cover. I'm no Mansonite, but i do love this cover. I also have a live version, that one's good, but not great. 6. Offworld (GoaWFC) - fair version. Sounds very similar to the Reload version. Considering both bands are(were) located in the NW U.S.A. i would not be surprised if the two bands shared members. 7. Reload (Tubeway Navy) - Good one, better than Offworld. 8. Jimi Tenor (Random) - Probably my least favorite. I get the impression that Tenor is making fun of the song. I don't like that too much. 9. Terre Thaemlitz (Replicas Rubato) - the classical piano version is the one i prefer of the 2 on the album (there is an electro version as the hidden track). I don't like it as much as Numan's (denis haines) piano version, but still quite good. 10. Timb the Enchanter (internet / napster) - a fan version, this is an above average instrumental. Only 2 minutes long though. Hope everyone enjoyed my list. jared P.S. - Have any Americans out there ordered stuff from NuStreet before? I'm curious as to how long it takes to get an order, the quality of service, etc. thanks. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2000 14:39:26 -0500 From: Val & Ben Iglar-Mobley Subject: and with strange eons even death may die To: The Gary Digest I've been trying to figure out the storyline of 'Exile.' We'd heard that 'Exile' was written to tell a story, more so than any other of his albums, more so even than 'Sacrifice' which I thought had a clear narrative form. But from what I can tell, if there's a story there it's completely nonlinear, more hyper- than text. Something I have noticed. Gary described 'Dominion Day' as opening the album with a revelation that his hero has, that the divine power is in actuality an evil force, and that once this power becomes aware that he has discovered this, it begins searching for him. Through the album, his hero is trying to understand what he's found out, and it unsettles him, bringing him closer to madness. He realizes the world-- the way it's put together-- has a malevolent underside. That there is a darkness waiting just outside our perception, that we do not notice in our assumption that the divine powers are benevolent to us. That theme is exactly the essence of the stories H.P. Lovecraft wrote. During the 1920s, Lovecraft wrote an entire series of short stories and novellas around the concept that there are strange, alien beings present everywhere in the world, much older than humanity but unnoticed by us, with their own designs for the world with no concern for us. His protagonists uncover pieces of the truth about the way the world is put together through his stories, but generally by the end of each they each end up insane or dead or both. Lovecraft inspired an entire generation of gothic horror writers who both emulated his style and wrote within the context of the very mythology he had created. He is widely considered to be the inheritor of Poe's legacy. 'Exile' is the most Lovecraftian album I've ever encountered, much more so than any with overt Lovecraft references, such as Fields of the Nephilim or Nature Unveiled. Because it doesn't come right out and state anything, but hints at, eludes to, and suggests. Just as Lovecraft did. We are forced to construct our own horror of what is being conveyed out of our own imaginations. I wonder if Gary was reading any Lovecraft as he wrote the album. Does anybody know? It wouldn't actually disprove the connection if he wasn't; in a way that would give it an eerie realism. lots of macabre love, Ben http://home.earthlink.net/~iglarmobley * * * "You have to consider the possibility that god does not like you. Time To Die 2. Are 'Friends' Electric? 3.I Die:You Die 4. Down In The Park (I remember seeing the musicvideo for this when I was 9 years old - made an impression) 5.Exile By the way : Even though it isn't mentioned in the lyricbooklet, I believe that Gary sings, in Absolution, Close The Dead Eyes Of God Made Lame. Besides the entire 78-81 "machine era" recordings, as well as sacrifice and exile, my CD player and turntable usually feature: 1) Peter Murphy: DEEP - better than anything he did with Bauhaus, an essential addition to any collection 2) Negativeland: ESCAPE FROM NOISE - Possibly the greatest underground college experimental album from the 80s. Priceless. 3) X-Ray Specs: GERMFREE ADOLESCENCE - I get tired of the Pistols too easily. Nothing beats the screeching vocals of Poly Styrene on this classic 70s punk release. "The day the world turned Day-Glo" is one of the best punk tunes ever recorded. Period. 4) The Toasters: SKABOOM - First release from NY's favorite ska outfit does not contain one dull song. 5) Th'Inbred: REPRODUCTION - Extremely hard to find 7" from the mid 80s of pure, adrenaline laced punk/core with hysterical (and true) lyrics. 6) Wall of Voodoo : THE INDEX MASTERS / CALL OF THE WEST - Essential listening. Possibly the greatest cover ever made of a Johnny Cash song (Ring of Fire). 7) Killing Joke : KILLING JOKE - Their first (and greatest) album. If they would re-release it with "eighties" as a bonus track it could quite possibly be one of the best post-punk albums of all time. 8) Bill Nelson's Red Noise: SOUND ON SOUND - Next to Numan, Nelson's SOUND ON SOUND is one of my all time favorite LPs. "Don't touch me I'm electric" can be played 100 times back to back and you still will get into it. 9) David Bowie: EARTHLING - This CD is so underrated it makes me sick. One of the best mixtures of techno and guitar's in my opinion. WHy didn't anyone else get it? -Nick (HateGrape) Eagerly awaiting Sep. 2000---unless they change the release dates again! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Apr 2000 20:46:29 -0700 From: Michael Tressler Subject: Final post on this subject To: digest@garynumanfan.nu Hi everyone. I posted, and then Tim Houtby posted, "AFOS first album is just as good or better than anything Numan has=20 done (just my opinion)" ...Absolute shit Michael... First, let me say (and I'll try to be brief in this post) that I know that first statement is a little strongly worded, considering the veracity of Numan fandom. I actually expected to get a lot more flack for having said it. Second, I think Tim should have been a little less offensive by simply saying, "Michael, I whole-heartedly disagree with you." Third, by saying "absolute shit" do you mean that because I like that particular album as much or more than any GN album, OR (and this is what I suspect), do you mean it's absolute shit that I would actually like ANY album more than any GN album? Or thirdly, are you saying that my opinion is worthless and I shouldn't even be allowed to have one? This is what I feel you were saying, Tim, that no album or artist ever has been, or ever will be, as good as anything Gary Numan has ever done or will do, and anybody who doesn't think that way, well, they're complete shit. It doesn=92t matter that I used AFOS first album. I could have named a number of albums I feel that way about. Let me put a question out to the entire digest. I would guess that nearly every subscriber here has at least one or a few albums they would categorize As Good As Or Better Than MOST Numan Albums (how about a new Top 5?). And maybe some would go as far as I did in saying, As Good As Or Better Than ANY Numan Album. I could probably put a couple in each category. I am NOT slamming Gary Numan in any way. I've loved his music for nearly twenty years now. But he is not the 'be-all and end-all' as far as music goes, though I=92m sure some people here think so. We all love other bands and artists as well, and to say what you said to me is to say the same thing to ANYONE who loves any album as much as, or more than, any Gary Numan album. Now that our respective humble opinions are out in the open, lets put the issue to rest. Sincerely, Mike Proud Member of the "34 and still listening to New Wave Music" Club. Can you guess what video they were playing? Yes, they were playing the Radio Heart song video. Was in shock as it wasn't CARS, actually had to call my wife into the room to confirm that was actually Numan that I was seeing. Unfortunately I caught the video in the middle, but at the end it credited the song to Gary Numan. When I guess it should have said Radio Heart featuring Gary Numan. Did anyone else happen to see this or we're we just hallucinating? Maybe the climate is changing for Numan, am looking forward to maybe seeing other video's that he made. Mind you I won't be holding my breathe, but they did play something other than CARS.
