To that end, I have loads of bootleg tapes from over the many years of his music career. In 1996, some friends of mine and I made 5 CD-Rs of some "rarities" of various concerts from the 1980s. I was looking through my collection of tapes to find the best sound quality that I had, as well as looking for those live tracks that Gary doesn't play very often at all. I also tried to pick tracks from the periods in which they were first released. We then digitally "cleaned up" the sound using some computer software, and tried to "blend" the tracks as best as possible. The CD-Rs still came out as a collection of bootleg tracks from various shows and from various recording standpoints (several are from the mixing desk, but some are from the audience perspective). The project name of "Disconnections" applies in more ways than one ;-) With the help of some other friends, I've recently made another 5 CD-Rs of "rarities" from various concerts from the 1990s. Before anyone asks, I can't make CD-Rs and each of the 5 CD-Rs sets are spoken for, but I can dub either of my CD-Rs to Maxell XLII (i.e. chome) tape. If anyone is interested in a tape trade, please send me your list of tapes. If you don't have anything to trade and still want a tape copy of either of my CD-Rs, then I'll do it for my standard $5 USD per tape ($10 USD for the pair of tapes). This price includes postage and packaging to anywhere in the world. For those who might be interested, I make absolutely no profit for this price. This price simply covers the cost of the tape(s), a padded envelope, and the postage. As you can probably tell, I'm quite proud of these compilations of Gary Numan bootleg recordings :-) Although I've traded many Numan fans for my bootleg tapes over the years, I would not have been able to complete the "Disconnections" project without the expertise and support of several close Numan friends. Thank you all for making my project a reality...and you know who you are... OK, I'll get off my soap box for now. Here's the particulars on each tape. Lovecraft stories was interesting, and I do agree there are similarities (although listening to Exile is much less difficult than trying to make it through Lovecraft's text. Most of it is just excessively wordy, and requires reading and rereading a single page several times over). I found something recently in a reference book about the Bible. Relating to the "story" of Exile, here's what it said: Perhaps most surprising are references to God and satan used interchangeably in two parallel stories. In 2 Samuel 24:1, God provokes David into ordering a census, but in 1 Chronicles 21:1, Satan does the provoking. Apparently, the Chronicler saw no problem in assigning God the role of adversary. Even in Job, Satan is not portrayed as a diabolical figure personifying evil in opposition to God. Instead, he appears as a cynical member of the heavenly court, probing to see if Job lives up to his reputation for righteousness. In yet another story that recalls the Satan of Job's story, the prophet Zechariah has a vision of the high priest Joshua standing trial "before the angel of the Lord, and Satan Standing at his right hand to accuse him: (Zech 3:1). Here, however, the Lord rebukes Sata. It is apparently only after the return from their exile in Babylon that the Jews bean to prtray Satan as the leador of wicked spritual forces pitted against all that was good. The Persians, who released the Jews from captivity, held similar beliefs of a demonic ruler. uh-oh. Baby's crying. Gotta go. Mike __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Here in Australia I have heard these Exile type drum loops on TV quite a lot, channel 10 are running a promo for the show "Law and Order" and the backing music has the same drum loop that Gary used for "Prophecy". Gary had actually been reading Clive Barker, who happens to be my FAVORITE author. Barker was probably (as most horror writers) influenced by Lovecraft (my second favorite author). If you like Exile, and you like Lovecraft (and I know that you do) you should try the Damnation game, or Imagica for a start... or Books of Blood if you like short stories.... I have been listening to GN since the early eighties, and have been reading Barker for about half that time. When I heard Exile, somehow I knew what had happened..... I am not sure where I read the confirmation of my suspicions. Perhaps on the website.... It's a list I put together that now stands at about 140 songs, with the ones i own highlighted (it goes by artist, song, and album of appearance). If anyone wants to see it just email me and i'll send you a copy. Also, maybe some of you out there know of some covers i'm not aware of and can let me know (this has already happened a few times). I also have a cd-burner and would be willing to trade some songs if anyone's interested. jared ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Apr 2000 12:15:58 +0100 From: rawebley Subject: Re-issues To: "Numan Digest (E-mail)" Does anybody out there know if the Warriors album has been re-issued on CD? For me, Numan is in a class by himself, and I would find it extremely difficult to compare other musicians to him. Yeah, you can do it, but I would suggest it's kind of silly. I mean, I love AFOS too, but can you really say they're anything like, say, Thompson Twins (yuck), Human League, Nik Kershaw, Depressed Mode, or OMD just because they all used a lot of synthesizers? I certainly wouldn't go so far as to say AFOS is better than any of those other groups, just different.
