To: The Gary Digest Dear 'noids, I want to pose a question I've been wondering about, at the back of my head, probably since I first got into the man. Do you think Gary's music is pessimistic? The lyrics to his earliest songs roll through my head, and they describe a society in which relationships have broken down. People are isolated and dehumanized. Since then his lyrics have been less thematic, but still they have a negativity to them. The music itself is somber and foreboding, so much so that even his arguably "upbeat" songs come off as giving a lie to themselves. "You Walk In My Soul" sounds more lament than exalt. I just wonder what all that is doing to us, and what it must be doing to him. love nonetheless, Ben http://home.earthlink.net/~iglarmobley * * * "All this help leaves me cold This is confusing This is confusing me again I must get out" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 May 2000 13:57:28 +0100 From: "Mark Mirfin Spire Software" Subject: Gary Numan Digest V2 #37 To: "Gary Numan" Help! My daughter rang me at 11.40 p.m., "Quick, Gary Numan's on the television....." We had already missed the first bit, so I didn't see it all. The format was Jo Whiley and three musicians (!) sitting in a circle, discussing video clips. The chap from Gomez was clearly not interested in money or fame, he and his band were just messing about with music and got a contract... You could see Gary bristling - you know how he hates apparent hypocrisy!!!!!! The man was clearly genuine, he just dismissed everybody else's music/styles/tastes/opinions as rubbish (he used a ruder word than that). Gary talked more sense, in my opinion. The other guest was Emma Bunton. I never realised she had freckles! But I was sitting closer to the TV because Gary was on. She seemed a nice, genuine person. (I'll probably get flamed for saying something nice about her, but I think everyone should be kind to everybody, anyway, and hate all the bitching that goes on.) Gary, as usual, undersold himself. He said he was not a good singer, and that his music was not as good as the "really clever people" who came after him. When asked, he said that he just opened the door to a new way of looking at music, and everyone else followed. What I saw of the programme (probably most of it) I managed to video (Please don't ask for copies, I have no facilities for that!), but I'll watch it again at the earliest opportunity! It is absolutely crap and the scratching sounds so amatuerish. Whilst any Numan exposure is good I think it is a shame that it has been done so badly. I can't pick any off of "The Plan" because they're demos and not really finished songs. But some others: The Life Machine - sorry, can't get into it. I find the bass drum thump-thumping at the end just a little too obvious. The words are decent, but it sounds like a non-Gary track to me. My Brother's Time - I know some really like this song, but the music is too minimalist for me, and the words are difficult to understand as we discussed several digests ago. Pump It Up - This doesn't sound like much of a "Gary track" to me either. The music is the Beserker sound taken to its radio-friendly extreme (which sounds like Frankie Goes to Hollywood or something), but I don't even see much of Gary in the lyrics. I Can't Stop - There are some decent songs on "Strange Charm", but this and "The Need" are not two of my favorites. Pray - I've tried to get into this one also, and I know it does set the stage nicely for the rest of the album (and "Exile" for that matter), but I'm bored until he starts singing. All the Instrumentals - Never been a fan of "I Nearly Married...", "Airlane", or any of the others - Gary's lyrics made the songs extraordinary in my opinion. (I do like "Puppets", though, because I pretend Gary is really saying something!) One last comment, though: I'd take any of these songs over 90% of what's out there! -Mark "Passengers With a ticket to burn and burn" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 May 2000 00:22:50 -0700 From: Mark Subject: Nuuma and Claire Hamil To: digest@GaryNumanFan.NU E. On the music quiz "A Question of Pop", a programme likely to feature members of boy bands, rappers, SAW, etc., they have a weekly feature in which a celebrity (?) mimes to a real record, pretending to be the originator of the record. I didn't explain that very well. The question was, who was miming as GARY NUMAN? (no embarrassed attempt to explain who GN is). They played the original "Cars", while someone in black leather with yellow flashes mimed to it, copying some of the actual moves of the original video. The teams had to guess who the mystery celebrity was. It was Lee from the group Steps. [At this point all British Numanoids will be cringing and shouting "Noooooooo!!!!", and hiding their Numan T-shirts. Do you have Steps in other parts of the world? No? Tragedy!] So Lee appeared, out of focus, and never full- face, in the middle of a tambourine, lots of little Lees stood still as they whizzed down the keyboard, if you know the Cars video you will understand what I'm trying to say. Just a little step back into the limelight for our hero! For example, you can gain access to various aspects of your account and can change or reconfigure it by sending email messages to the server. You can also subscribe or remove yourself from mailing lists, have files encoded and mailed to you, and execute server-based processes by sending carefully formatted mail messages to the server. Some of these control messages require a valid account on the server and are password protected. You can gain access to your accounts by using your POP password. Messages to the server must be directed to "MDaemon@[host.org]". For those commands which require a valid account on the server, the subject of the message must contain the user's POP name and POP password separated by a comma character - ex: "Bill, MyPassword". Commands are placed within the message body. There can only be one command per line, but multiple commands can be batched in the same message. Account access and control: - The following commands require a valid account on the mail server. You must place as the subject of the mail message your POP username and password if you wish to gain access to any of the commands in the next section. The syntax of the subject line should be "POP NAME, POP PASSWORD" (notice the comma) ex: Subject: arvel, mypassword For any of the following commands to work for you, your system ad- ministrator must allow your account to originate server control messages. If you suspect that your remote access has been removed or is not functioning properly please consult with your administrator. Subsequent lines will be treated as the text of the signature file until the word END is encountered on a line by itself or the end of the control message is reached. NOTE: The signature file feature is only available for RAW format messages. MAIL FORMATS none A listing of all the supported mailbox formats will be mailed back to the originator. Ex: MAIL FORMATS List, Catalog, and Process Control: - The following commands do not require an account on the mail server although some of them are password protected. The subject line is ignored when processing these commands. LIST [listname] A listing of all mailing lists along with the names and address of members will be mailed back to the originator. Lists must be individually configured to allow this to occur. This is useful when you want to find out the IP address assigned by your ISP when using a dynamic dialup situation. Since the information contained in this message is considered private the subject of the requesting message must contain the MDConfig administrator level user and password such as: Administrator, Password. Note: The address returned is the one Windows feels like giving. It could return your local LAN card IP address as easily as an ISP assigned one.
