To: "'digest@garynumanfan.nu'" Very thought provoking question! Depressed people tend to see the world more clearly than "happy" people. Could the lyrics be depressing because they clearly portray the world? or because they clearly portray Gary's view of the world? I have read and listened to many depressing things, and have not found that they inspire me to become depressed. (I tend to become depressed on my own quite nicely) On the other side of the coin, I have seen many people who are so obsessed with being 'happy' all the time, that they are unable to change the circumstances that cause them to be unhappy. I believe that a balanced state is best. At the same time, I find I am most creative when I am slightly depressed. (if I become too depressed, I have trouble getting out of bed, much less being creative.) perhaps it is the same with Gary.... There were only 16 entries, which is really disappointing, but here are the results, anyway, for whatever they're worth. For the sake of brevity, and to make this list more reflective of the tastes of Numan fans in general, these are the songs that appeared on more than two people's lists, along with how many lists each song appeared on and its total weight. For the weights, I simply inverted each song's rank on a list-- the song at a person's #1 spot got a "weight" of 20, down to the one at #20 getting 1. These were then totaled across the lists. (Totals that include a decimel reflect that some listed songs as tied on their entries. In those cases, the weight assigned was the average of the tied weights.) . . . 1) I Die: You Die 8, 134 2) Down In The Park 8, 119.5 3) Metal 7, 105.5 4) Dark 7, 98.5 5) Me! I Disconnect From You 8, 92.5 6) Cry The Clock Said 7, 83 7) A Question Of Faith 6, 62 8) We Take Mystery (To Bed) 4, 62 9) My Breathing 4, 59.5 10) Are 'Friends' Electric? 4, 54.5 11) The Seed Of A Lie 3, 53 12) Warriors 4, 51.5 13) Jo The Waiter 4, 49 14) Complex 3, 46 15) Slowcar To China 3, 45 16) Airlane 3, 43 17) Cars 4, 42 18) The Joy Circuit 4, 41 19) Remind Me To Smile 3, 40.5 20) Bleed 4, 39.5 21) Strange Charm 4, 39 22) We Are Glass 4, 38.5 23) Dominion Day 3, 38 24) The Machman 3, 37 25) The Angel Wars 3, 36 26) Voix 3, 35.5 27) Noise Noise 3, 34 28) Music For Chameleons 3, 32.5 29) The Iceman Comes 3, 30 30) Your Fascination 3, 28 31) Please Push No More 3, 27.5 32) Berserker 3, 20.5 33) The Skin Game 3, 20 34) I'm An Agent 3, 19 35) My Shadow In Vain 3, 10 . . . Interestingly, the song that came out on top, quite handily in fact, is not one of Gary's three most famous. I think part of that might be a reflection of entrants passing over the more obvious songs. For example, VRcadia@aol.com offered a list that was "sans Cars because we can all take that as read." So it may be that those three place higher in our estimations, we just don't feel the need to trumpet them. Another interesting observation is the number of songs here that were released as singles. 14 out of the 35 here appeared on an A-side. Now, by my count, Gary has 276 different songs that he has released, and 41 of those have been released as singles. Comparing those ratios, then, we actually favored singles for the songs that came out as the top, but even so they were still outnumbered by songs that weren't singles. So even among Numan fans the singles still hold a place of prominence, but his other songs still show pretty strongly. Now, I should mention that this final list is based on counting ALL the versions of a particular song toward its total. However, a majority of entrants (10 out of the 16) actually specified variant versions of one or more songs on their lists, so this list doesn't quite accurately reflect that specificity. Narrowing it down like that, then, and counting only exactly the named version of a song together with other instances of that named version, the list would look like this: 1) I Die: You Die 8, 134 2) Cry The Clock Said 7, 83 3) Me! I Disconnect From You 7, 82.5 4) Dark 6, 81.5 5) Metal 4, 70 6) Down In The Park 5, 62.5 7) A Question Of Faith 6, 62 8) My Breathing 4, 59.5 9) Are 'Friends' Electric? 4, 54.5 10) The Seed Of A Lie 3, 53 11) Warriors 4, 51.5 12) Complex 3, 46 13) Slowcar To China 3, 45 14) Airlane 3, 43 15) The Joy Circuit 4, 41 16) Remind Me To Smile 3, 40.5 17) Bleed 4, 39.5 18) Strange Charm 4, 39 19) We Are Glass 4, 38.5 20) Jo The Waiter 3, 37 The Machman 3, 37 22) Metal (20th Anniversary) 3, 35.5 23) Music For Chameleons 3, 32.5 24) The Iceman Comes 3, 30 25) Your Fascination 3, 28 26) Please Push No More 3, 27.5 27) The Skin Game 3, 20 28) I'm An Agent 3, 19 Notice that in this specified list, several of the top songs drop considerably, because they're no longer counting variant versions toward their totals. "Metal 98" is the only variant version of a song to make the final list. Notice something else about this form of the final tally. Several songs disappear completely, because they didn't appear listed in the same version on more than two lists: We Take Mystery (To Bed), Cars, Dominion Day, The Angel Wars, Voix, Noise Noise, Berserker, and My Shadow In Vain (in that order). Ironically, in this way, the more well-known a song is and concurrently the more versions of it that are available, then the more that actually works AGAINST its standing. Personally, I think the first list is probably more reflective of our likes in general. After all, the poll was supposed to be about what are our favorite SONGS, not favorite particular recordings, and whichever recording a person may list of a given song, it's still that song being listed (even though I too got specific with my list). And all those songs that dropped out I think are ones that should certainly be included, so the first list I think is more valid. * * * I hope everyone has enjoyed this poll. I certainly had fun putting it together and coming up with the results. I was actually surprised by some of what came out. If anyone would like the rest of the results of this poll, you can e-mail me personally and I'll send them. love, Ben http://home.earthlink.net/~iglarmobley * * * "See my scars, they call me such things" ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ****************************** ------------------------------------------------------------------- T H E G A R Y N U M A N D I G E S T is produced and distributed by Derek Langsford, Dave Datta, and Joey Lindstrom dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu, datta@cs.uwp.edu, Joey@GaryNumanFan.NU ------------------------------------------------------------------- To reply to the messages in this list, email: digest@GaryNumanFan.NU If you want to be removed, or someone wants to be added, email: digest-request@GaryNumanFan.NU ------------------------------------------------------------------ The Gary Numan Digest is brought to you via Joey Lindstrom and the GaryNUmanFan server Joey@GaryNumanFan.NU All of the opinions in this digest belong to the respective authors and do not necessarily agree with those of the Digest Producers. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Produced and distributed by Derek Langsford dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu -------------------------------------------------------------------------- To reply to the messages in this list, mail to: digest@garynumanfan.nu If you want to be removed, or someone wants to be added, you can mail to digest-request@garynumanfan.nu --------------------------------------------------------------------------
