I just got a cover of Everyday I Die by the Smashing Pumpkins. It was done live in 1997 during the soundcheck at a show in Vancouver. Unfortunately, as it was during a soundcheck, some guy named Jimmy Frog is on vocals (i presume he's a guitar tech or something). Apparently, two versions were done one right after the other, first with Frog on vocals, then with Corgan. I'm still trying to get the one with Corgan on vocals. As for the song itself, the sound quality is poor, and i have to turn the volume all the way up just to get to normal mid-range volume. On the plus side, as it was during a soundcheck, there's no sounds of fans screaming or whatever. On a slightly different note, i've been somewhat inspired by the lists that Ben and others have been putting together so i'd thought i'd throw in a little list of my own: the Numan songs MOST COVERED. According to my wretched estimates, it's as follows (i'm not counting remixes): 1. Cars - 29 times covered (my standards are basically anything that can be found off of computer format; that is cd, cassette, vinyl, or mp3s converted to cd. Strict standards, i know.). 2. Are 'Friends' Electric? - 20 times covered. 3. Down in the Park - 16 times covered. 4. Metal - 8 times covered. 5. We Are So Fragile - 7 times covered. Now i get why Cars is covered so much (it was a huge pop hit, and unfortunatley many of the bands that cover it aren't numan fans). But why are AFE and DitP so popular with bands? What is it about these 2 songs (both of which you have to admit were fairly obscure, at least in the U.S. when they came out)? And as far as i can estimate, both Metal and WRSF are covered twice as much as any other numan song. What is so appealing about those two (i actually can't understand the popularity of WRSF; it's never been one of my favorites, and yet it keeps coming up)? If anyone has any thoughts on the subject please post them on the digest. I have some theories, but i'm interested in what other people think. jared ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Jun 2000 13:00:50 -0400 From: Matt Ervin Subject: Gary Numan Digest V2 #43 To: digest@garynumanfan.nu (Gary Numan) > >Date: Sun, 28 May 2000 21:00:35 -0700 >From: Mark >Subject: Non Numan music help >To: digest@GaryNumanFan.NU > >Hello all. Barnes" Subject: Gary Numan Radio Hour To: digest@garynumanfan.nu Last weekend (5-27-00) the local new wave program on 91.7 FM in Austin, Texas devoted an entire hour of it's show to "the god that is Gary Numan". The good news is that they got through the show without playing "Cars". The bad news is that they refused to play anything beyond "Dance". Opening song was the piano version of "Down in the Park" and it resulted in some great local exposure for Gary going all the way back to the Tubeway Army days. Now if they would only do a Blondie radio hour! To: digest@garynumanfan.nu Hi fellow 'surfers, To continue the lyrics debate, here's my version of In A Glasshouse : I've seen love, I've seen hate I've seen all of the emotions God creates I've seen good, I've seen bad I've seen everything that you could ever have I've seen tall things, I've seen long things I've seen everything a man was meant to see No one came, no one is here, no one remembers I've heard truth, I've heard lies I've heard everything that ever crossed your mind I've heard laughs, I've heard screams I've heard everything that makes you give up dreams I've heard you, I've heard me I've been everything I wished I'd never be I've heard music, new heroes Then I've heard some things I really wouldn't know Come inside, look in my heart, you will remember People came, you fell on me, I can remember I break hearts, I broke mine I'll break everything I'm given if there's time I've said things I don't mean I could lie in front of God and he'll believe I cheat in song, I cheat in time I'll take everything you see and make it mine I don't like this confession Don't pretend you never heard and turned it off Someone fell, we have the proof, I'll always wonder Friends can change, some go some stay, I can't remember. I have deliberately omitted the sample as I'm sure everyone knows it ! So: Any contestants? Cheers, Linda ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? To: digest@garynumanfan.nu Greetings my Numanesque netpals! Ok, enough corny writing, let's get down to business. The last digest (42) looked a bit emaciated so let's fill it up again. Now, during the wait for the next album, we've had several lists to entertain ourselves with. Now let me know if this has already been done, but if it hasn't then here's my idea: One of the things that are one of the most attractive apects about Gary Numan's work, is the lyrics! They've certainly made an impression on me, that's why I became a fan ! So let's make a list of our most favourite QUOTES from GN lyrics. I know for a fact that as always it will be difficult to choose between all those wonderful, powerful, touching words but it'll be something to do at least. Rules: The quotes should be no longer than 2 sentences worth. It can be anything Gary has ever uttered and you should state where it's taken from. These quotes should be chosen because of the way they sound-:) Here comes the hard part - No more than 25 may be listed! (for the sake of readability - it might become too much otherwise) I've only ever heard 47 of Gary's songs (hoping to increase that number very soon) and I wrote down as discriminately as possible all the ones that keep sticking in my head. And it came to 62! But I've been ruthlessly selfdisciplined and here are my 25 final chosen to start off the lists with: 1. Time To Die: I'm so tired and it's my time to die. 2. Time To Die: And my memories - I can't give them away. 3. Exile: Took everything I loved and turned love into pain. 4. Absolution: I would walk out of heaven just to be with you. 5. AFE (live): You see this means everything to me. 6. The Skin Game: I'll give you nothing but lies or nothing at all. 7. Dark: I am the ghost that reminds death of you. 8. A Child With The Ghost: You let your heart slip away. 9. She's Got Claws: Here on the ground, on the floor, screaming nothing at all. 10. I Die:You Die: But I'm still frightened by the telephone. 11. We Take Mystery: You're my assassin but you can't see the crime. 12. I Die:You Die: Hear them laugh, watch them turn on me and I die, you die (well, it's hard to pass over!) 13. My Shadow In Vain: Here am I, I really don't feel quite sane. 14. The Skin Game: I've been on TV, sold my face to you. 15. Down In The Park: Well, I was in a carcrash, or was it the war?, but I've never been quite the same. 16. AFE: So I find out your reasons for the phonecalls and smiles. 17. Dead Heaven: Thought I saw the Virgin look at me and cry. 18. Berserker: I can't believe the noise, we'll take this place apart. 19. I Still Remember: I could tear all your pictures, I could tear everything. 20. My Shadow In Vain: And one hand on the handle of the mad/sane door. 21. Call Out The Dogs: I've lost time, I could lose everything. 22. Exile: It came for me at night and took me dream by dream. 23. Down In The Park: You can watch the humans trying to run. 24. I Die:You Die: I pause for effect then whisper 'Who are you?' 25. This Is Love: This is pain disguised as a dream. Phew! Have fun out there!
