This month's Q magazine has David Bowie in the Cash For Questions section (people send in questions and get a fiver for their trouble or something). Someone (maybe even a digester) has asked him if he has anything to say on the incident regarding his request for Gary Numan's removal from the Kenny Everett video shoot and Gary's subsequent branding of Bowie as a 'shitbag'. Bowie replies that he may well have asked for Gary to be removed from the shoot during the rehearsal, but states that he would have been welcome to watch the actual shooting of the video. He explains that he doesn't know how the message for Gary to leave was conveyed to Gary, though he guesses it was heavy-handed. (This is the best bit) With regards the name-calling, he says that Gary can call him whatever he likes (and goes on to list a few slanders akin to 'shitbag'), it will not alter his opinion that Numan has produced a few of the greatest things in pop. He finishes with some marvellous banter. He says that he and Gary both share a fear of flying, then corrects himself by saying something like "...oh no, that's not right is it? I'm the one scared of flying - Gary's the one who's not very good at it." Don't know about you but I think this is great! The last part is fine with me because as we all know it is blantantly incorrect. I suspect Bowie knows this too, and a cheeky little quip like that is certainly preferable to outright hostility. As for the comments about Gary's work, this is something I've been waiting a long time for. Maybe I don't read enough, or maybe I read the wrong things, but I've never heard Bowie comment on Numan's work. Those few complimentary words are a delight to finally hear. I tried to make the quotes applicable to the subject at hand. The only sections that do not have many Numan quotes are the "site notes" section and the general "music" section (and that's because I thought I should give the other bands I talk about a few props). The "subsite" I call "Numallenium," http://www.nmia.com/~pweber/numan/index.html, (which is nothing special, just my little Numan space) has, of course, more quotes. It just so happened that quotes from Numan were way more appropriate than most I could come up with. Go figure. I just got a cover of Everyday I Die by the Smashing Pumpkins. It was done live in 1997 during the soundcheck at a show in Vancouver. Unfortunately, as it was during a soundcheck, some guy named Jimmy Frog is on vocals (i presume he's a guitar tech or something). Apparently, two versions were done one right after the other, first with Frog on vocals, then with Corgan. I'm still trying to get the one with Corgan on vocals. As for the song itself, the sound quality is poor, and i have to turn the volume all the way up just to get to normal mid-range volume. On the plus side, as it was during a soundcheck, there's no sounds of fans screaming or whatever. On a slightly different note, i've been somewhat inspired by the lists that Ben and others have been putting together so i'd thought i'd throw in a little list of my own: the Numan songs MOST COVERED. According to my wretched estimates, it's as follows (i'm not counting remixes): 1. Cars - 29 times covered (my standards are basically anything that can be found off of computer format; that is cd, cassette, vinyl, or mp3s converted to cd. Strict standards, i know.). 2. Are 'Friends' Electric? - 20 times covered. 3. Down in the Park - 16 times covered. 4. Metal - 8 times covered. 5. We Are So Fragile - 7 times covered. Now i get why Cars is covered so much (it was a huge pop hit, and unfortunatley many of the bands that cover it aren't numan fans). But why are AFE and DitP so popular with bands? What is it about these 2 songs (both of which you have to admit were fairly obscure, at least in the U.S. when they came out)? And as far as i can estimate, both Metal and WRSF are covered twice as much as any other numan song. What is so appealing about those two (i actually can't understand the popularity of WRSF; it's never been one of my favorites, and yet it keeps coming up)? If anyone has any thoughts on the subject please post them on the digest. I have some theories, but i'm interested in what other people think. jared ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Jun 2000 13:00:50 -0400 From: Matt Ervin Subject: Gary Numan Digest V2 #43 To: digest@garynumanfan.nu (Gary Numan) > >Date: Sun, 28 May 2000 21:00:35 -0700 >From: Mark >Subject: Non Numan music help >To: digest@GaryNumanFan.NU > >Hello all. The good news is that they got through the show without playing "Cars". The bad news is that they refused to play anything beyond "Dance". Opening song was the piano version of "Down in the Park" and it resulted in some great local exposure for Gary going all the way back to the Tubeway Army days. To: digest@garynumanfan.nu Greetings my Numanesque netpals! Ok, enough corny writing, let's get down to business. The last digest (42) looked a bit emaciated so let's fill it up again. Now, during the wait for the next album, we've had several lists to entertain ourselves with. Now let me know if this has already been done, but if it hasn't then here's my idea: One of the things that are one of the most attractive apects about Gary Numan's work, is the lyrics! They've certainly made an impression on me, that's why I became a fan ! So let's make a list of our most favourite QUOTES from GN lyrics. I know for a fact that as always it will be difficult to choose between all those wonderful, powerful, touching words but it'll be something to do at least. Rules: The quotes should be no longer than 2 sentences worth. It can be anything Gary has ever uttered and you should state where it's taken from. These quotes should be chosen because of the way they sound-:) Here comes the hard part - No more than 25 may be listed! (for the sake of readability - it might become too much otherwise) I've only ever heard 47 of Gary's songs (hoping to increase that number very soon) and I wrote down as discriminately as possible all the ones that keep sticking in my head. And it came to 62! But I've been ruthlessly selfdisciplined and here are my 25 final chosen to start off the lists with: 1. Time To Die: I'm so tired and it's my time to die. 2. Time To Die: And my memories - I can't give them away. 3. Exile: Took everything I loved and turned love into pain. 4. Absolution: I would walk out of heaven just to be with you. 5. AFE (live): You see this means everything to me. 6. The Skin Game: I'll give you nothing but lies or nothing at all. 7. Dark: I am the ghost that reminds death of you. 8. A Child With The Ghost: You let your heart slip away. 9. She's Got Claws: Here on the ground, on the floor, screaming nothing at all. 10. I Die:You Die: But I'm still frightened by the telephone. 11. We Take Mystery: You're my assassin but you can't see the crime. 12. I Die:You Die: Hear them laugh, watch them turn on me and I die, you die (well, it's hard to pass over!) 13. My Shadow In Vain: Here am I, I really don't feel quite sane. 14. The Skin Game: I've been on TV, sold my face to you. 15. Down In The Park: Well, I was in a carcrash, or was it the war?, but I've never been quite the same. 16. AFE: So I find out your reasons for the phonecalls and smiles. 17. Dead Heaven: Thought I saw the Virgin look at me and cry. 18. Berserker: I can't believe the noise, we'll take this place apart. 19. I Still Remember: I could tear all your pictures, I could tear everything. 20. My Shadow In Vain: And one hand on the handle of the mad/sane door. 21. Call Out The Dogs: I've lost time, I could lose everything. 22. Exile: It came for me at night and took me dream by dream. 23. Down In The Park: You can watch the humans trying to run. 24. I Die:You Die: I pause for effect then whisper 'Who are you?' 25. This Is Love: This is pain disguised as a dream. Phew! Have fun out there! Or would it? I have listened to countless covers and have found myself enjoying some of them and really not caring about others. The only covers I have ever enjoyed are the ones featured on Random1. Sadly though, there is no information about why the bands covered what they did and why they covered them in the first place. Which brings me to my point... Numan songs should be covered by Numan fans. When I sat down and first contemplated covering any Numan songs, I was rather nervous and very humbled to the fact that covering any Numan song well was going to be a massive effort, if not an impossible task. After much self-therapy I decided to move on and not only create 1 or 2 Numan covers, but an entire CD of Numan covers. I took on this task entirely alone - reinterpreting the music and vocal lines, playing each instrument on the CD, and then mixing and producing the finished product. I chose the songs very carefully, basing them on the deep meaning they held for me, my childhood memories of these songs and what they mean to me now. I have been a Numan fan since 1979 and I am now 34 years old. I consider myself fortunate to have caught Gary's career form the beginning. The songs I have covered on The Church Of Gary Numan: A Dark Celebration are as follows: 1) Joe The Waiter - This was a no-brainer for me. I have loved it since I was 14 and used to play it al the time on my acoustic guitar to friends and family... any one who would listen! I still do.... I made it a bit avant-garde with breathy vocals with a rainy day type of mood. I have to than Ace from KISS for my guitar solo! 2) I Dream Of Wires - My favorite song on Telekon which is the prototype for dark electronic music. I love the way Gary did it, and I took it a few steps up on my version. Very heavy, dark and fun to dance to. I've received very good reviews about this song from devout Numan fans. 3) Cars - Well, what can I say. It's been done to death, but I have always found this song to be the ultimate electronic pop song in history. I love the song so much I did 2 covers. The second one will surprise you! 4) Stories - Dance was an incredible album from start to finish. What Gary was personally going through during this period of his life is forever crystallized in this album. A great experimental offering from Gary. This song always made my feel good. It was the happiest song on the album to me and that is why I did it. Some may feel a bit of a hip-hop beat to this song. Numan fans dig this one. 5) Down In The Park - This song is the Numan torch song. Done and redone. I felt that I had to pay homage to Gary and redo this song a bit differently than others had covered it. I gave it android-like vocals, heavy (almost metal) guitars, and gothic synth lines. 6) A Question Of Faith - The best cut on Sacrifice to me. Very angry song with dark religious features. I like when Gary gets a bit controversial. The song could have been a big club hit if he were Madonna or some hip hop group. I searched myself when I did this song and found that I needed to do it darker, with 3 guitars going at the same time, gothic synth parts and very heavy, almost unholy vocals. My family doesn't like to listen to it because they think it will send them straight to Hell. Sorry! 7) Dominion Day - The first song on Exile. I fell in love with it and the entire CD. Flew all the way to London to buy it... really! I first saw Gary live at Shepherd's Bush Empire and heard this song for the first time live. I do this song completely out of character for a Numan song. It is all acoustic with classical guitars in the mix. I've heard some good feedback on this one. 8) Love Is Like Clocklaw - Warriors is a forgotten album at times. I love the album and this song brings tears to my eyes. It did when I was a kid and still does. Gary must have been very hurt and lonely at this period in his life and I try to capture the pain, sorrow and feelings of the original on my version. This one is a favorite of many Numan fans. 9) Metal - Another must do from the album that changed music history. It is as simple as that. I am sure Gary did not know what a significant impact and influence he would have on the world of music when he recorded this album. But, he did. I still have the original on vinyl from Woolworth with a price tag of $6.99 on it! My version is guitar oriented, acid rock meets Chuck Berry, meets the Beach Boys meets.... Well, you be the judge. 10) You Are In My Vision - Another ground breaking album (my all time favorite). We could never say enough about Replicas could we? I still own the original on vinyl and had Gary sign it in Cleveland. I do this song in a pop-folk mode. 11) I Still Remember - Ah, The Fury. Could I ever reach Gary's crisp, electronic-funk sound? Of course not! But, this song was a standout to me for years. I love the entire album, but this song really turned me on because of it's somber, slow-groove and sad lyrics. 12) Cars (The Jazz Mix) - I turned Cars into a fusion jazz instrumental. Fretless bass, jazz piano, trumpet and sax with a dry jazz guitar lead. I took a chance on this one. Try it... I hope you like it. Well, I have wasted enough of your time with my childhood memories and dribble about my feelings over Numan songs. I invite you to listen to samples of the songs at my web site dedicated to Gary, so dedicated, I have called it The Church Of Gary Numan.
