I haven't had a turntable in years and my cassettes wore out long ago. I would be glad to reimburse for any expense. To: "Gary Numan" Chris said, >I got to see this Jo Wiley show thanks to my DSL line, and the Replicants >website. I remeber the comment of which Jo speaks, but I didn't really think >it was racist. Maybe a tad ignorant, since the video they showed was the >same type of faceless R & B band they play over here in American, some >happen to be white a lot happend to be black, but all sound the same. Given >Gary's limited education I blew it off as him being misinformed. I have to >put up with truly racist people everyday. His comment meant nothing to me, >but then I happen to be white. Did his comment bother anyone else on the >digest? Here in the U.S. being branded a racist can follow you around >forever, I'm sure it's probably the same way in Britain. Gary still gets >very little publicity over here I would hate to see articles about him >ending in "Oh by the way, he's racist". I don't think he was misinformed nor offensive in any way. I watched the interview, videoed it and have watched it again after this latest 'controversy' and there is absolutely nothing Numan says which could be labelled 'racist'. He critisised R&B music, that is all. The Kellis single which had been played Numan even excluded from what he was talking about - 'Not so much that song, in itself, but a lot of the songs like that one'. He makes no reference whatsoever to the colour of the performers, and Tom from Gomez was agreeing with Gary all the way, it seemed to me - and no-one labelled him a racist (probably because he's middle class and university educated) Disliking R&B music does NOT make anyone a racist. R&B is in a pitiful state at the moment, and it needs to be critisised - it is boring, safe and repetetive. While there is some R&B which transcends this - the likes of TLC spring to mind - the fact remains that most of what makes the charts from this particular genre of music is nothing more than shite. If you want to call me a racist for saying that, go ahead - because you would be very wrong. My girlfriend hates R&B too, and she's black. I don't even think Heat or Jo Whiley have any argument, I actually think gary should sue the magazine and miss Whiley for slander, and I think Numan fans should boycott this magazine and let them know why they have lost thousands of potential readers. Racism is an evil, nasty thing and to accuse someone of it just because they slag off a musical genre for it's musical content and nothing else is just plain wrong. Gary was absolutely right to write in to Heat to set the record straight, but I think that their 'apology' is just not good enough. Jo Whiley should also apologise. What makes the whole thing even more obnoxious is that Gary praised the Maxim/Skin song to high heaven, said how much he admires and likes Skunk Anansie - this is not the language of a racist. Disliking r&b does not amount to racism - morover, assuming that R&B means BLACK music is, to my very left wing mind, offensive. Jo Whiley and Heat are the racists here. It's as if they are saying, 'Oh, you HAVE to like R&B because thats the only music black people produce, and we do like to appear politically correct.' - this sounds ridiculous, doesn't it? But no more ridiculous than what was said about Gary's comments. Heat is a racist magazine. Jo Whiley is a racist. Until they write in here and explain why their assumptions that black people should only make certain types of music are not racist, I will not retract my comments. HA! Antonio I am a poseur and I don't care, I like to make people stare! To: digest@garynumanfan.nu Can anyone help me validate the authenticity of someone I met on Napster?? He claimed to be Gary's second cousin, named Mark Webb. Said Gary's dad Tony was his Mom's uncle. He told me anecdotes of hanging with Gary in the day, and that he did some sound engineering on DANCE. He claims to be in possession of two songs stolen from the Dance session. (which he, of course, promised to send me, along with a scan of the handwritten cover, listing all possible tracks.) Says he is a system analyst now or something like that. He even (supposedly) coughed up Gary's handle on Microsoft's Comic Chat, and even his usual chat times.... As I re-read this, I realize how gullible I can be sometimes! Anyone's thoughts would be appreciated!
