To: Gary Numan I have just got back (late Saturday night) from London. The Numan concert at Brixton went back-to-back with the Baha'i Day at the Millennium Dome, so I haven't got time to give a full report. BUT - surprise, surprise - the concert was really good! Do't take any notice of the moaners.... The concert was well worth it! More details in next Thursday's Digest! Bearing in mind that these vary around the world, mine would be: 1. Beserker. Not only my favourite cover but one of my fave photos. A work of art in itself. 2. Replicas - of course! 3 Pure. Rates highly because it's so effective. 3. Dance. Atmospheric... 4. Living Ornaments ' 79. One of the great live shots, with Billy Currie's head peeking over the synths! When you consider how BAD many of them were (first TA, Pleasure Principle, The Plan, WARRIORS and TELEKON - ARRGH!) it's not a difficult choice. To: Gary Numan >From memory, I think that Exile went into the album charts at about number 47. Has anyone been able to find out about "Pure". It would be of interest to see how the album does. Paddy Vickers See some of you Friday night!!!!!! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Oct 2000 13:42:26 +0100 From: "brendan colton" Subject: Clouds, singles, 'Fallen'... To: Hi there, It has to be said, 'Pure' is the best Numan album since 'Replicas'. However, I have just one quibble...what's with all those freakin' clouds in the CD booklet?? If I wanted clouds, I'd watch 'Highway To Heaven'. For me. it takes away from the theme of the album and is a lost opportunity for the fans to get even more of those superb pictures of Gary. It's a bit lazy to repeat the same picture...even lazier to turn it around. Oh well. Maintaining the pessimistic theme, I'm not so sure that releasing a single prior to the album would have had any major impact on sales. David Sylvian's first single from 'Dead Bees On A Cake' was 'I Surrender' (new material) which entered the UK Chart at No.40 and came out before the album, costing £2.99 each.. It also came in two CD formats. His compilation album entered the charts at No.57 this week, included new material and also came in two CD formats. Now, comparing a probable similarly dedicated fanbase, Numan entered at No.58 this week. Even if he released a single now, on two formats, and considering most of us have the album and some may not be keen to double up on the single, I'd expect even the best track (in my opinion 'My Jesus') to enter at no higher than No.60, assuming distribution was spot on. It's also unlikely Eagle would sell it for less than £3.99. It's only benefit would be to allow Numan to chart in the singles chart in four decades, as he has done in the album chart. Looking at the survey on 'Pure' I think that we should see 'Fallen' as an interlude on the album. We're being a little harsh on this track. Let's face it, could you seriously handle 'One Perfect Lie','My Jesus' ,'Listen To My Voice' and'A Prayer To The Unborn' one after the next. I know that that would really blow my mind. If I listened to that sequence, I could never listen to anything else again....! Bye for now. I'll see you lot at Brixton later. Future Music Magazine finally arrived here in LA. And with a seriously high price tag. I don't think I've ever paid so much for a magazine in my life. But is it quite the treasure. My 'Pure' cd arrived just yesterday from Germany, and until then I had only track 14 of the cd that comes with the magazine, which is 'Prayer for the Unborn' - my first taste of the new album. I had it on repeat for two days. Even bumped my new David Sylvian 3 disc set Everything and Nothing (which is completely amazing by the way). 'Unborn' is a totally great song. I must admit I never really cared for 'Exile', other than the fact that it brought Gary to LA for the first time in many years, and by being released on Cleopatra gave me the opportunity (for better and worse) to do the US re-issues of a few years ago. 'Unborn' sounds like Gary to me. New plus old and moving onwards. Exile sounded like somebody else (Rage Against the Machine or Korn or something), and along with 'Sacrifice' (which I love) had a very muddy sound to me, so much so that I don't ever listen to it (Exile - in case I've lost you). When I remastered 'Sacrifice' for the US release I brightened the mix just a bit. But 'Unborn' already has treble, and for this I am most thankful. The introduction reminds me of 'Warriors' and then it kicks in, sometimes like 'Replicas' and very Nine inch Nails (which I find ironic - stealing from (I mean influenced by) someone who stole from you) and totally Numan. Wow. I've been reading people proclaim 'Pure' as his best album ever (which seems doubtful) but having finally heard even just a slice I can see what all the raving is on about. What I like about it, as opposed to 'Exile', is the space (that's why I like 'Warriors' and 'Dance' and 'The Fury' so much). It's also very aggressive (I'm really just talking about 'Unborn' here) but I don't feel like he is just throwing it at us in a wave of fury. I was glad to get the whole cd which includes lyrics (essential for my enjoyment) and am looking forward to spending some time with it. FMMag has a lengthy article (which I haven't read yet), many photos, a cd rom portion showing Gary's new studio (which I haven't played yet - not much into cd roms ever) and a "selected discography" which is quite inaccurate (ie it lists "Human" as being released by Cleopatra Records in 1995) but at least they kept it to "selected" discography, as surely a complete discography would have been insurmountable and quite the mess. The rest of the magazine seems like its mostly ads for technical equipment, and reminds me of the endless stream of MacMall magazines I get in my mail box. Who knew there was so much *stuff* out there and *who* would possibly be interested. Anyway... Numan sections: A+ rest of Magazine: C Great magazine - it only took me two months to get a copy!! If you have =A314,000 knocking around then you might fancy buying Gary's Corvette from > > http://www.corvette.co.uk/CAR_STO.HTM =20 This is a specialist Corvette dealer in Kent, and having spoken to them = they are restoring the car after it has apparently been "butchered" by a = host of bad mechanics. They are also respraying it back to its original white = colour (a shame in my opinion - it looked cool in black). They are also = fitting a new interior (red, as opposed to the nice tan leather it had) which has arrived today. I wish anyone luck who fancies buying the car. Personally the whole = thing is a bit tainted for me (plus I've just bought a new car). The story is = that when Gary got his TVR back in summer 99, I mailed Tony Webb to ask if = Gary was now selling the Corvette - turns out he was prepared to sell it to = me for =A35,000 (a lot less than the 14k asking price now, but this was = before any restoration work). Anyway, my wife sold her car pretty quickly so = that we would have the money to hand to buy the Corvette, and we would use = my other car as our everyday use car. I sorted out insurance and = everything, but was left waiting and waiting for Tony to go and get the car from = Gary's house. Eight (count em) months later after much to-ing and fro-ing Tony = told me that in the end Gary had given the car to his brother John. Very = annoying after what had gone on but I understood how he would want to keep the = car in the family so I let it go, despite my immense disappointment - big = time! Two weeks ago we bought ourselves a BMW Z3 which we're really happy with...yesterday I found the ad on the net - talk about timing. There's = no way I can afford to buy it now, and three cars is a bit much for two = people when we only have a drive built for one! Also I'm a bit loathed to pay =A39,000 more than I was going to get it for, restored or not.=20 So anyway, it's there for the taking - a great piece of nostalgia to = own if you have the money hanging around and can afford the petrol! Gary will = be signing the car when the restoration is complete...I'm told they have = let it go to this dealer as they want to see it restored to it's original = glory. I'm sure it'll be good, and I intend to go down there to take a look at = some point...hopefully get a ride in it! :-) Hello to all who were at Brixton - hope you had a good night! I have only made it through Pure a couple times, then some skipping around. I am looking for the single....hmm, which will it be? So, at this point I am not qualified to review it per say. I would even hate to give an opinion on it, until I have had the chance to crank it up, listen to it in the car, etc. etc. etc. I will say this. It is much more varied, and rich than his last two. At any rate, THANKS! goes out to Rob, for letting us know about the discount at Amazon.co.uk Because of that, I got the book, and the CD with shipping, for not too much more than I would have paid for a single CD full retail here in the states. Bob Dylan, Public Enemy and James Brown are three of the greatest artists= of all time - all universally admired by critics. But what about Gary Numan? Writers have systematically rubbished his musi= c over the years and, until recently, denied his influence on modern music.= If you mentioned him in the same breath as Dylan, Brown or Chuck D, you'd= likely be ridiculed. Then how about this quote from Tricky in today's Guardian newspaper: "I know without doubt that I am the best artist in the world and have bee= n for the last seven years. Not because my music is the best, but because there's never been any compromise. The only artists who've done that are old school: Bob Dylan, James Brown, Public Enemy and Gary Numan." I can't begin to say how significant this statement is. How much longer c= an it be before Gary Numan is acknowledged as one of the greats of modern music? But right now, all that matters is that Brixton is going to be the best night of the year so far.
