SHUT UP ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Date: Sat, 28 Oct 2000 14:09:50 -0700 From: Michael Tressler Subject: Hello Again To: digest@garynumanfan.nu First off, I'd like to say that I'm not very proud of the message I posted a couple weeks ago where I insulted Matthew Roberts just about every way I could think of. True, I was angry about an insult he hurled at me, but I had a chance to take the high-road by tempering my response (and thus show that conservatives can be and usually are nice people), and I didn't do it. So, my sincere apologies to Matthew. I don't think his original insult was appropriate but neither was my lengthy response. I want to respond to some things from Ben's letter of reply. Be advised: many parts of this letter stray off the topic of Gary. You have been warned. > I think there's a value in having a diversity of opinions. Stick around and share yours. It'll be a better Digest for it. I may resubscribe later. I must admit it's nice not having to constantly try to catch up on digest reading as I'm usually about 5 to 10 issues behind. Besides, I'd rather not scroll through dozens of "Pure" reviews. I'll wait until I can buy the CD myself and formulate interpretations. > Why did no one else on the digest read my statement the way you did? > I did. I just decided not to respond. I'm sorry that my original statement was so vague that more than one person saw it completely different from the way it was intended. I thought it made sense; Gary rebukes what he thinks doesn't exist, but that act (in my interpretation) implies an acknowledgement of the possibility of that same existence. In no way did I say Gary believes in God. I figured out that he doesn't believe long before I started reading this digest. > As a member of the non-believing minority, I think theists need to have some humility about they privelege they enjoy in our society. Just want to point out that there is no shortage of bashing of Judeo-Christian values on television, movies and all media in general. > About Gary railing against god for not existing, I'd take that as artistic expression. He believes there are no gods, but it's a familiar enough concept in our culture, he answers back to it as if it did exist. In literary terms it's called "reification," making something real that does not exist. I don't think we can take it as evidence that he's conceding the possibility of a god's existence. I can. That's my personal interpretation of his lyrics. We can agree to disagree here. > I guess only atheists and homosexuals are allowed to say how they view Gary's lyrics. > WHOA! Where'd THAT come from? Meaning that those two groups have expressed how Gary's music and lyrics have helped them through rough periods in their lives. And I'm glad for that. But then a believer in God merely says "I think Gary does at least concede the possibility" and, in a round-about way, is called G-damned stupid. That hurts. There are a lot of names I could be called and just shrug it off. Stupid happens to not be one of them. > Look, I can say it's possible there is a god, Thanks > but I don't believe there is one. If I'm stating my beliefs, then, there is no god. Period. Does that mean if I state my belief that there is a God, then there is a God, period.? I think i see your meaning, Ben. If you don't believe, then for you personally there is no god. That's fine. But that doesn't make Him nonexistent for us who believe, and I don't mean just in our own minds. God is either there, or not. It's a 50-50 prospect. We're both just taking our chances on different sides of the fence. > ...just go back to your Thought-Police Baby-Killing Neo-Nazi Rally. > OUCH! Uh, but the thought-police are actually a reactionary force, depriving the masses of the liberal right to freedom of thought and expression. They're a fictional force, but if we categorize them, they'd be on the right, not on the left. Same with the Neo-Nazis; they're reactionaries, not liberals. Right, not left. I strongly beg to differ here! By reactionary force, I assume you mean an anti-government group. It's true that the Right favors smaller, less intrusive government. So by definition anti-government groups are called right-wing extremists (I want to add that the left has their share of extremists as well). Conservatives believe just as much in freedom of thought and expression. When we on the right think "thought police" we are talking about the politically-correct crowd; the ones who say you can't say or do or think a certain way because it offends people, the ones trying to make crimes out of actual thoughts (as in the push for hate-crimes legislation, when the thought behind the action is as much a crime as the action itself. Calling Mr. Orwell...). And the Nazis? Well they seized every gun in Germany when Hitler rose to power, which is what the Left want to do in America. Communism, Socialism and Naziism are certainly for Big-Government control and very little individual freedoms. That's how the Left stands, not the Right. > Get it... well, correct, not right: we're Pinko Commie-Symp Baby-Killing Tree-Hugging Welfare-Mother-Coddling Ralliers. Make sure you've got us at the appropriate rally. I assume this statement was made tongue-in-cheek (please no dirty jokes). But it would be a shame to think that you are even partially proud to attach a some of those labels to yourself, especially the baby-killing one. You seem like such a kind and loving person, Ben, why can't you extend that kind of affection to the most innocent and helpless people of all, the unborn? I'm hoping "Prayer for the Unborn" echoes that sentiment. Perhaps Gary, in trying to have a child, has placed a newfound respect and value on those unborn children. I can't say as I don't have the album yet, all I can do is just hope. In closing this segment, we should realize that fetuses (babies) are the result of parents' actions, whether those actions were taken responsibly or irresponsibly. A child's life should not be snuffed out because two people refuse to take responsibility for their actions. That, to me, is the highest form of cowardice. (note: please don't e-mail me with arguments about rape and incest. Even as a pro-lifer, i believe a woman should have a choice in those cases, and those cases only.) > Be the change you want to create in the world, as Mahatma Ghandi said. I just tried to be. And is it sure that Exile did enter at 47. Anyone? Meanwhile, I have to say that the distribution & promotion of Pure in Belgium is very poor. Most record shops didn't even stock it (Virgin megastore in Brussels simply doesn't have it!). Plus the concert announcement of the 29th. I read it in the paper (it was however, good to see that Gary was mentioned with big caracters, and underneath in real small characters the concert of Midge Ure was announced). Nothing on the radio... I did however buy about 9/10 copies, and can easily sell them to whomever listens to the album. Looking forward to the concerts with the feedback of Brixton Academy. Thanks for your help. www.pure-numan.de ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2000 15:15:05 -0000 From: "Info (Spire Software)" Subject: Pure and Ultra To: "Gary Numan" Hi Pure IMHO is probably Gary's finest work since Telekon, yes I think it is really that good. I've been listening to a lot of Depeche Mode recently (waiting for more Numan releases) and in particular there latest album, Ultra. I can't help thinking that Gary has been inspired by DM's best album when he made Pure. The analogue sounding synths, the treated guitars and the theme of religion and sex seem to figure large in both albums. Both albums even have a purely instrumental track. To my recollection the last time a Numan album had a completely instrumental track was 'Airlane' on The Pleasure Principle. Whilst Ultra seems to have a greater 'depth' both musically and lyrically (Numan is 'angrier' than ever on Pure), Pure is harder edged and more cynical in it's approach to the common subject matter. Both works are excellent, and Gary does indeed deserve the accolades that are, at last, being bestowed on him. Has anyone else drawn this conclusion? Seen this similarity? Cheers Mark PS Many thanks to all the pocket book philosophers who took the time to reply to my assertion that God cannot exist. Lesson learnt. You can't polish a turd, so let's stick to Numan and his music, not his existential (or other) mumblings! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Oct 2000 15:19:14 +0000 From: Jackie Taylor Subject: pure review To: digest@garynumanfan.nu my favourite tracks from pure are: walking with shadows rip little invitro but the whole album is great. still dont know if i like it as much as exile though. exile seemed a bit more 'together', to me anyway. Jackie Louise Taylor ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Oct 2000 09:20:17 -0600 From: Jeff Tolva Subject: Pure tracks from one-off gigs To: digest@GaryNumanFan.NU Fellow Numanoids, Some of you have asked about the new tracks from the recent one-off gigs and if they were released on the "Pure" album. In fact, during the recent Shepherds Bush Empire gig on 14 April 2000, "Hetrodyne" became "Walking With Shadows" and "Pulse Bass" became "Rip". Also, going back to the Rock City gig on 18 April 1999, "Alien Home" became "One Perfect Lie". Hope this helps! Jeff Tolva (The Machman) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Nov 2000 14:57:00 +0000 From: Dryad Subject: That post-vacation feeling To: digest@garynumanfan.nu (Gary Numan) Hi folks- So I picked up "Pure" today, and just gave it the initial listening. I've yet to hear a song I dislike, although I think the first one will be my least favorite. I adore Walking with Shadows, My Jesus, and I Can't Breathe (which is downright creepy). A Prayer for the Unborn has got to be one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. As a whole, Pure reminds me of some strange bastardization of Sacrifice and Exile, with bits of maybe Tubeway Army f/GN and the barest whisker of a chord from Dance thrown in for good measure. I should say that I am not fond of Exile at all, and am very pleased not to hear so much distortion on Pure, although I do wonder what's been going on in Gary's life that has him railing against god. Now I don't want to start the whole god-good/god-bad argument arguments over again, if you're a believer, hey, I'm happy for you, if you're not, that's cool too. But still, Pure, Exile, and to some extent Sacrifice seem to be...really angry, with Exile the angriest of them all. What's up with that? Is Gary just going through another Saturn Return? Is he listening to too much Goth? Perhaps a bit of Bacharach, Foo Fighters, or Martin Denny would not go astray... Clea, back from vacation, unfortunately ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Oct 2000 16:12:00 +0300 From: The Tik-Tok Man Subject: The Numan Whisperer To: Numan Digest Fellow Numanudniks, Even the God-debating ones. Has anyone noticed that on "Pure" our boy has introduced a new singing formula? On at least 3 tracks he whispers in a spooky Christopher Lee-type voice, then screams his lungs out for the heavy crescendos. He seems to like this new formula. I have preordered my copy (the clerk thought I was talking about Randy Neuman - I forgave her since it's not like any of GN's songs ever play on the radio except for Cars). I'm hoping GN comes to Seattle again - His show one of the best concerts I saw in the 90s. You fans on the other side of the Atlantic are fortunate for the early release of Pure. By the way, if you were a DJ, what songs might be potential singles? At least where I live, the college stations are open to playing new stuff & one of the local Alternative stations do have a new music format from 9-10 PM M-F. I've met the DJ so I do have a shot of getting what you suggest played. By the way, I agree with the guy from St. Louis - Radiohead's Kid A is a BIG disappointment & a HUGE letdown from OK Computer. Looking forward to the new U2 release - hopefully ENO is at the controls once again.
