Did it just disappear then? I have been enouraging non-Numan fans to go and buy PURE, but not with any joy so far! The two people I have managed to play it to think it is excellent, but neither has actually *bought* a copy. I was totally convinced, having read the reviews in the Sunday Times and on the website, that people would be buying this album, but it seems that this will be a slow start. Has it had any radio play??? The analogue sounding synths, the treated guitars and the >theme of religion and sex seem to figure large in both albums. "Listen to My Voice" is largely influenced by DM, in my mind. I wonder how intentional it was though?... I'm glad someone else sees it that way. Later, Ken "The Numanaic" http://members.nbci.com/numaniac/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Nov 2000 15:35:02 +0000 From: Dryad Subject: I take it all back (yet another Pure review) To: digest@garynumanfan.nu (Gary Numan) So on yesterday I wrote about my initial listenings to Pure, and have since decided that what I wrote was complete and utter tripe. And so once again I'm attempting to put my feelings about Pure into words. What at first sounds like a very 'metal' disc, some kind of horrible nightmare of Gary trying to sound like a cross between Papa Roach, 'Enter Sandman' Metallica and NIN, has turned into a relentless, trance-like, absorbing sound that hearkens back to Numan's early days, yet as a whole sounds nothing like them. People who haven't heard anything by Numan, not even 'Cars', are going to fall in love with Pure. I won't do a song by song dissection, but some elements remain in every song. There are syrup-laden synth elements oozing and pulsing every few bars, guitars droning and throbbing almost constantly, piano notes dropping like solitary fat raindrops amongst the honey. Finally what you expect the least delicacy from, the drums, the drums that don't interfere with the music, as if they were the heartbeats to the flow of blood that are the guitars and synths. Above it all Gary's voice prowls, creepy whispers and cold cries of passion stalking each and every track. Throughout it all I'm suspended in darkness and warmth, cradled in comfort, swaddled in a tightly, oh so lightly produced wrapping of layered music. Aw yeah, it's that good. A word of advice and warning - when y'all get Pure in your sweaty palms, listen to it once, then put it aside for an hour or two. Read the liner notes. Then pop it in again and put it on repeat. Non-Numanoids might be really irritated, but they'll have to get used to it as you'll be playing it over and over and over again over the next few months. Clea, who doesn't think Gary's as angry (overall) as she thought he was yesterday ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Nov 2000 08:35:34 -0000 From: "Garland, J." A copy of Pure, the US release ( has Spitfire's logo and web site ). Talking with the clerk, he said it was released on Oct. 27th. according to their system. He seemed surprised because he thought it was next week also. It get better and better though the first two tracks took a bit getting used to... I agree with the fan in the lst digest. It's a lot better than Exile which I didn't like much at all. It was very quiet, and had too much crap deep bass to my ears. Everyone loves Sacrifice, but opinion's v.mixed on Exile. He's got more anger coming through again. Obviously God's got a lot to answer for re the tragic loss of Gemma's and Gary's unborn child due to the miscarriage... And the anger etc certainly comes through on the tracks. Christians won't be happy... Wonder what the response has been from fear Factory, Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode et everyone who has praised Gary for his (uncredited) influence on their music... It's a pity Eagle messed up over the cover artwork since the fiery clouds are too dark on the cover; it obviously should've been like the insert inside, then Gary really would've stood out on the cover and the fans and casual record buyers would notice it for sale... Don't if they'll be a single released until the tour next year when hopefully word of mouth will add sales and interest to Gary's lastest great album. The real fans have been "inoculated" against the title track, because we are used to the new version of FRIENDS. But other people aren't.... RIP is very strong, but I rather think that LISTEN TO MY VOICE has got so much going for it. It has a fast beat, a memorable chorus, and those heavenly synth sounds over the musical passages. What about I CAN'T BREATHE ? On the question of what Gary has got against God. Well, he hasn't really forgiven God for the death of his grandfather, and now the miscarriage... Of course, Gary doesn't believe in God, I know that..... First - Someone said it again (Jackie Taylor) !! : "I don't know if I like it as much as Exile" - You know, I've been debating this for weeks. Still can't make my mind up (Sorry if that upsets the "Pure Is THE ONE" people) And here's another thing - Mark mentions an Ultra inspiration. Well I also can see Ultra in Pure in parts. Especially in just some of the sounds Numan uses. Can't come as a surprise as Gary makes no secret of his fondness for DM. And here's one more thing - Dryad asks "I do wonder whats been going on in Gary's life that has him railing against god" - errr....... PLENTY I'd say.... strange question I thought. And finally - the gig rage didn't surface. No Manchester repeat. Thank god (if he does indeed exist).
