Special Exile Test Message Do not reply ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Thu, 09 Nov 2000 01:42:04 +0000 From: NumanBoy Subject: "Pure" in the US record shops To: BoysLikeUS I did my first round of work tonight for Spitfire Records. I was asked to check stock in local stores. What a disapointment! At CDWorld in N. Dallas, they had no copies. They said they were only shipped ONE COPY for the day of release, but expected more. They are hoping to recieve more tommorow. At Wherehouse Music that had one copy. Agian the only copy they recieved. It was listed at $17.99! At Barnes and Noble, there were none. Anyone else, have the same experience? When Exile was released, the stores were loaded with copies. Cheers! Both David and I belong to the Spitfire Streeteam and we've both received NOTHING in terms of promotional stuff to help boost sales in any form! I've been asked only to help promote the upcoming Dio concert in DC (<<< GAG!!!!!!!!!!!!>>>). Gary indicates he's coming to the US soon to talk promotion......I hope he makes more headway or sales of this CD in the US are going to be dismally low! (End) I've created a web page with a couple of versions of the reversed mp3 of the track so, if you are inclined, you can download and listen and may be able to figure out what I can't. The URL is http://mydyingmachine.tripod.com On another note, I understand all of the references to Manson and NIN influences in Pure, but has anyone else notice the Recoil influences? The first time I listened to the album I was amazed at all of the Recoil-like sounds and transitions. I know that Gary is a publicly admitted Recoil fan, so I suppose that it is not too surprising. I agree. I just purchased it through NuStreet a couple of weeks ago; it's the last of the "missing years" for me which represents the time I stopped buying Gary Numan on vinyl ("Beserker" is the last one I own) until I rediscovered him through the Internet and the release of "Exile". I don't think "Machine + Soul" is awful, but I think it was clear he was showing no signs of musical growth. I like "The Skin Game" very much, but that could be an outtake from "The Fury"; the music never really grew or changed much until "Sacrifice". Anyway, one person's opinion. We U.S. cowboys and cowgirls should be getting "Pure" this week - yea. -Mark "Blessed are they who pay homage to rumour" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Nov 2000 12:32:52 -0000 From: rawebley Subject: Pure Nu-Christians. To: "Numan Digest (E-mail)" I know the subject of Numan's beliefs (or lack of) has been done to death - but being a Christian myself having purchased a copy of PURE I'm finding it very hard to listen to the album w/o having feelings of guilt as if I'm betraying me beliefs. How do other Christian Numan fans get their heads round Numan's blatant hatred towards God? Do you feel guilty for listening to it. I like the sound very much but the lyrics I find it very hard to accept. This was my reason for not purchasing Exile. To: digest@garynumanfan.nu (Gary Numan) Tim, no doubt with eyebrow raised, wondered: >Dryad asks "I do wonder whats been going on in >Gary's life that has him railing against god" - errr....... PLENTY >I'd say.... strange question I thought. I should have been more articulate. Of course Gary would be understandably angry over the miscarriage, they both would be/are/were, but my question really relates to the anger that's come through since Sacrifice. Is he listening to too much Goth? > Perhaps a bit of Bacharach, Foo Fighters, or Martin >Denny would not go astray... I'm not attempting to discredit or argue with your above statements, this following is just something I found very helpful to me to understand Exile better. I have taken the below excerpts from the Special section in Nuworld - it is still there if anyone wants to see for themselves. This was written November 1998. - In many ways Exile is more like a concept album than a simple collection of songs although Gary prefers to think of it as a horror story set to music. - Lyrically it is based around a simple but frightening idea. That God and the Devil are one and the same creature, and that Heaven and Hell are one and the same place, and it is only the perception of those that find themselves there that makes it one or the other. One mans Hell can be another mans Heaven. Gary himself does not believe in God at all and so this album is not the work of a man trying to turn people away from whatever faith they may possess. What it does suggest though, is that our interpretaton of the Bible may be terrifyingly mistaken. As Gary himself has said many times while talking about this album, "if someone could walk up to me now and convince me that I was wrong and that God does exist, I would tend to believe that the 'Exile' idea is nearer the truth that anything I've ever heard from the pulpit. To find out that God was real would be the most frightening thing that I could possibly imagine." - The opening song on the album, 'Dominion Day', finds a man having what he thinks is a nightmare but soon realizes is actually a vision. A vision of what really happened when Jesus came to Earth. He is the only one to know the truth. As the album progresses, and looks at various common understandings based on religious teachings and stands them on their head, the man is suddenly aware that God knows what he has seen and is coming for him. End quote. This explanation helped me understand Exile so much better and I was able to see the links between the songs in this new light. Now the points of interest here are that it is clearly stated that Gary does not himself believe in God, and that Gary says he is not interested or attempting to turn people away from their beliefs or anything like that. Gary is presenting an idea. As far as I can see Gary has made several careful attempts to explain his situation regarding his music and his personal beliefs both in interviews and the Praying To The Aliens book. Numanoids shouldn't really be confused anymore as to what his standing is on the matter- he's made it clear all the way through.
