This is really a continuation of my last letter, but I decided to split it so people could just delete the God part if they wanted to. I like "Pure," except possibly for its overly-heavy resemblence to NIN's "Inside You." I am speaking as a woman and as someone who knows many people who have been raped (and I bet you do too, Matthew, even if they've never told you so), and who finds it to be a horrible crime. I'm judging "Pure" as a song, not as an act of violence (and yep, I do think that sometimes songs can be judged as something like an act of violence: a lot of rap music really does offend me, though I'm not trying to get it banned.) Yessir, it's a disturbing song! But it's meant to be, and it accomplishes its purpose--to disturb me. I don't feel like Gary is advocating violence of any sort (I know better), and it doesn't seem to me to be glorifying rape/murder/torture (it could be any of the above), just portraying it. I'm not necessarily wholeheartedly in favor of singing about such things, but OTOH, I do think songs and other forms of art must be judged individually. I've hated a lot of similar songs by heavy-metal bands that are stupid and make rape and torture sound easy and fun: but my all-time favorite SoM song is "Ribbons," which is a slasher song if I've ever heard it--it also happens to be a masterful and artistic one. Not by any means saying anyone is wrong to dislike it or find it too disturbing, just talking. zg Ziggy Blum Pestmaster (zigi@ravenland.com) Ziggy's House O' Vermin http://www.ravenland.com/index.htm/index.htm -- -- -- -- "...We all have flaws...Mine is being wicked." --The Cold Duke of Coffin Castle ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Nov 2000 01:10:27 -0000 From: "Antonio" Subject: AFE cover MP3 available online. The Hip-Hop Connection article is now out. Gary is interviewed with Fredi= Kruga under the title "We Are Class". Young Fredi is releasing what, as f= ar as I can tell, is a more underground version of Koochy, called.... "Kars"= - supposedly out yesterday (13/11/00). A nice interview with some cool pictures, it includes the following (keep= it quiet though!): "(Gary) admits he's got no idea what's going on in the world of hip-hop ,= but says his forthcoming work with hip-hop godfather Afrika Bambaataa wil= l ensure he's brought up to speed." I hope this long hinted at collaboration comes off. My knowledge of AB doesn't extend beyond Planet Rock, it's updating last year by Leftfield a= nd some vague notions about the Zulu Nation, but as far as I can see it woul= d be good for Gary. It would also confuse those work-shy folk at the NME (w= ho knows, they might even listen to it????). "Kars" is reviewed and gets 4/5. "Fredi has made the most of the track's potential and come up with a banging, radio friendly tune that ought to b= e tearing up the charts in a few weeks time. File this alongside other guil= ty pleasures like 'OPP' and 'Hard Knock Life' but don't front on it's genius= ." .. which I think means you shouldn't like it but you will because it's mo= st excellent.... dude. Classic Rock's interview is also out. It's slightly snooty, which seems a= little weird for a magazine which had David Coverdale on the cover recently. Still, there are some good pictures (again) and a pleasant surprise. There is another half-page advert for Pure, quoting several of the glowing reviews it has received. Maybe Eagle aren't so bad after all?= While I'm at it, has anyone seen a review of the Brixton gig? It was the best show I've ever seen (notwithstanding Smashing Pumpkins & Soulwax tha= t same week) and yet there doesn't seem to have been any press... d'oh! Matthew Roberts P.S. Cheer up! I can see the humour in Republican claims that some Democrats are too stupid to complete a ballot paper, but think about this= - does America really deserve a President who doesn't want to ensure that t= he people's will (as constitutionally defined) is upheld? So long as a recou= nt is done under the strictest conditions, what is George Dubya scared of? Losing? Anyway, by the time you read this it will no doubt all be over an= d one way or another the Israeli-US war machine will still be killing rock throwing Arab children, inconvenient former friends in Baghdad will still= be bombed and right-wing death squads in Colombia will still be funded by= U.S. development aid. In other words, we can all get back to cosy normality. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Nov 2000 18:46:02 -0400 From: Hopey Subject: I Can't Breathe... To: Numan Digest Thanks to David Numanboy for keeping us on our toes about distribution. I wasn't able to go to Boston to check out Tower, etc. (sorry David!). After dragging my ass out of bed early Nov 7 and voting (and HEY, the machine where I voted BROKE and my ballot wasn't scanned correctly - it ain't just in Florida!) I drove to Newbury Comics after work and grabbed the only copy they had. It was 9pm and only one copy - I was hoping they had sold a few by then. I like Pure, the photos (ME-ow on the leather jacket shot!!! It now adorns my screen at work) and hope "Rip" is the first single off the album since it's been mentioned but "I Can't Breathe" just blew me away! So I taped the album (in the track order I like) and play it constantly in my new Chevy (where I just put a shiny new Darwin fish on the back!). Regarding the religious thing, maybe it's Gary's schtick -y'know, he can't write about androids forever. And it goes with the goth sound. You have to remember he is an entertainer too. Bread and butter baby. Enough said! religion aside, I like Numan for the fact that he's pretty much drug and drink free - a good role model there. Anyway, I played Pure at work and one fellow peeked his head over my G4 and said "THIS is Gary Numan? Wow!". So see? I vote for "I Can't Breathe" as the new single - even in it's 5+ minutes! The track Are mice Electric? is a Smurfs piss take, and the only Numan reference in this song is the track title. Biggun released a parody of the Stars on 45 records entitled Bras on 45. In this recording he parodies hits of the time which includes cars. On his second LP a monologue at the end of the album, entitled 'The Other Educated Monkey' mentions Numan in the verse. '...........and the Panda it looks almost Human, He said it's no small surprise, those black rings round it's eyes, Make it look a bit like Gary Numan.' To: digest@GaryNumanFan.NU First posting by me but I wanted to add some comments on religiona and personal beliefs. I am not ashamed to admit that songs on Pure made me cry - I recently lost my girlfriends father and Gary's reactions to his loss hit some real tones. I have also not believed in a god for a long time but found myself questioning that when I lost such an important person. I was angry and wanted to lash out, I was also in pain and needed comfort. I went to church and tried to question my lack of faith. I am no further forward but hope that believers and non-believers all realise that personal views are that and we all have a right to them and to express them. Personally I think that Gary's are interesting and valid. I also think that Pure is a logical extension of Exile and obviosly far more up-front and personal than the what-if idea's of Exile. Brilliant and very helpful to me when I need to heal too. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Nov 2000 12:30:03 -0800 From: Pythoness Subject: On and On and On To: digest@garynumanfan.nu >But the other upshot of it all, is that I'm not sure as to whether we all >just read too much into this. I've said it before - what right does anyone >have to question the religious beliefs of anyone else? And are we just not >placing too much importance on the subject? Maybe even more so than Gary is >doing himself? I definitely think we're reading too much into it. From what I gather about Gary (from afar) is that he's a sensitive individual who dwells on things and takes them to heart, which is why he isn't doing stuff like "My Sharona". "God" is great shorthand for "everything," or the intelligence that the universe sometimes seem to use to slap you down just when you thought things were finally under control. You don't have to actually believe in or dislike God to use this symbology, and yes, the man is cynical about some aspects of organized religion. I think none of us can blame him for that. It's also his style. I don't know how much we can glean from how he's really feeling from his art (though very personal stuff like "Little Invitro," or, for that matter, "Child With The Ghost" are exceptions; I doubt all of his stuff is so intimate!). He does dark stuff. He's best doing dark stuff, at least IMHO. "Exile" came out of a particularly high point in his life, apparently, and it's hardly warm fuzzy music, eh? I think we can also assume that he's not the manically happy sort, but I also hardly think he goes around glowering and muttering the way you might guess from Pure. Heck, guys, it's art! Of course, I'm speaking as a Pagan who really likes the SoM song, "Floorshow," which pretty much takes the piss out of modern Pagans. It's just a good song. zg Pestmaster (zigi@ravenland.com) Ziggy's House O' Vermin http://www.ravenland.com/index.htm/index.htm ------------------------- "You gotta kinda drift through the albinos like they was bunches of sunflowers." --Rather Random Person Overheard at Kiva ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Nov 2000 13:53:31 -0500 From: Mark Hubbard Subject: Ponderings To: Numan Digest Well, After countless listening to Pure, here are a few of MY thoughts. 1) I, without a doubt, feel that unlike any other album in his career, this one is by far the most autobiographical. It has to be more personal than anything he has ever done, as far as story lines etc.. 2) In conjunction with point 1, I believe there is no real cohesive story to this album, also unlike anything he has done in the past. Not to say that every album had a straight forward story line, but there was at least a theme. In this album, the only real theme is the feel, or sound. 3) Considering the fact, that prior to the lose of their child, Numan had stated in an earlier interview, that God was mentioned much less in the new album, only one or two times he said. Well, we all know that is not the case, no doubt based on their lose. This leads me to believe that there is a load more stuff that was recorded, then later tossed out in favor of what ended up on the CD. While I like the CD, I have in the past found that many of Numan's B-sides SHOULD have been on the albums, if not THE single from them. SOOooo, I can not wait to hear some of the other stuff that was recorded, as they no doubt show up as B-sides to future releases. 4) I have to say that even though not my favorite songs from the CD, I think two of the strongest contenders for singles that will actually have some radio appeal, are Listen To My Voice, and My Jesus. Again, these are MY thoughts, and feelings. I do not wish you to consider my right, or wrong. Take care all, Mark Hubbard ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Nov 2000 12:58:42 EST From: Replica79@aol.com Subject: PURE the Album To: digest@garynumanfan.nu I've been a Numan fan since 1980 (I was nine years old when "Cars" first hit the U.S. charts) and I have to say that this is his most uninteresting album since "Exile". I know that a great deal of you really like the direction he's been going in the last few years, I just think its very boring and extremely derivative. I can't imagine how anyone who owns his earlier material could consider this his best work. He was an innovator of the electronic music revolution and has all but turned his back on "his" style so he can sound like Marilyn Manson. I don't get it. I call it the Bowie syndrome where an important artist influences a whole new crop of successful musicians and rather than continue on with what they do best they try to emulate what their followers are doing. I love the music of Gary Numan and in my opinion an artist is always as good as their best work, I just don't think anyone who owns a copy of "Telekon" could call this his best album. I miss the innovator... Anyway... I'm sorry if this upsets anyone I'm not criticizing your taste in music I'm just disapointed in Gary becoming a Heavy Metal musician...
