To: The Gary Digest Dear all, I wanted to let all know about one more looted treasure chest from one of the pirates. The 80s New Wave pirate I've plugged here a few times-- Wes Holley, mailto:romoboy@midsouth.rr.com-- has added one more pot of gold to his galley's hold below-decks. A two-for-one of piracy this time, he has a cd of both "The Radial Pair" and the Hugh Nicholson collaborations together on one disc, with this tracklisting: 1) Kiss Me And Die 2) Mission 3) Dark Rain 4) Cloud Dancing 5) Virus 6) Cold House 7) Red Sky 8) Machine Heart 9) All Across The Nation (extended) 10) All Across The Nation (instrumental) 11) Radio Heart 12) Radio Heart (extended) 13) London Times 14) Like A Refugee (I Won't Cry) (single mix) 15) Like A Refugee (I Won't Cry) (extended version) 16) Like A Refugee (I Won't Cry) (acoustic version) 17) Like A Refugee (I Won't Cry) (pandemonium mix) 18) Like A Refugee (I Won't Cry) (instrumental) I think "The Radial Pair" makes the perfect companion to 'Human,' and I actually like the Nicholson collabs, even though taking Gary's vocals out for the instrumentals kind of defeats the purpose of them being Gary collectibles. I'll confess I helped him out with this particular bootleg, but I still don't get anything out of the deal. I'm just a true-believer in cd piracy. Well, for the non-commercially available titles, anyway. If you contact him about this one, let him know I sent you. On the subject of piracy, I'm one of the people who shelled out the fifteen smackers for the bootleg from "the German"... and still bought the new album. Net loss of sales for Gary? Zero. I've also pirated the pirate and audio-taped that bootleg for a couple people. Jared and Linda, has adding that tape to your collections meant you're passing on the new album? Thought not. I guess the scolds who cautioned us about the evils of piracy we're a bit off-the-mark on that one. >> "Fallen" could have continued on into quite a funky track??? > Well it did??? It turns/blends into 'Listen To My Voice'. Uh, not on my copy it doesn't. There's a brief separation there; they're not run together. Listen, while we're imploring others to refrain from MIME-ing their posts, could we also ask that everybody refrain from QUOTING BACK THE ENTIRE FREAKIN' DIGEST IN A REPLY??!!?! Please don't hit the "reply" button to send a message to the list. Just type "digest@GaryNumanFan.NU" into your "to" box. Do a little extra typing and save us ALL a lot of extra scrolling. love and piracy, Ben http://home.earthlink.net/~iglarmobley * * * "I don't think we have 3,000 Nazis in Palm Beach County." --Bert Aronson, Palm Beach County Commissioner, on the Buchanan votes ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Nov 2000 11:30:35 +0100 From: luc.de_visscher@ch.Novartis.com Subject: BELGIUM, SOUND OK!!! To: digest@garynumanfan.nu (Gary Numan) Went to the final gig yesterday evening, and it was absolutely brilliant. I did take about 15 people to the concert, and after Cologne I was a bit afraid, but the sound turned out to be very good! And, as always, the Belgian crowd was there in higher numbers 500/600 people than for the other European concerts, and very enthousiastic. Playlist was the same as in Cologne: Pure, Films, RIP, Cars, The angel wars, Walking with shadows, Down in the park, Dark, My Jesus, Me I disconnect form you, I can't breathe, Are friends electric? -- Listen to my voice Dominion Day -- A question of faith A prayer to the unborn As expected, Down in the park, AFE and Cars got the best reception. I also brought 2 people who never went to a Numan concert before, but they are Numan-crazy now, and will go to any following concert I'm sure. Haven't heard one single negative comment on this one. We managed to talk to Gary for about 1/2 hour after the concert, and he confirmed the rumour that Mr. Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins) wants to work on a project with him. 2 days before Gary, Midge Ure gave a concert in the same venue, but Gary beat him by a landslide. There definitely was twice as many people, the concert build up was better, the concert far more dynamic, and the crowd wilder. Good to know as a "benchmark". If any comments in Belgian press, I'll keep you informed. I'm not an expert on backward linguistics, I don't know "how" it can, it just is. Have you listened to it in reverse? Again, you can download it from the following page: http://mydyingmachine.tripod.com/ I suggest you listen to it, then let me know what you think. It is quite obvious that Gary's vocals are not recorded "forward" on the track, they are obviously backward, which lends an appropriate air of mystery and dread, and just plain weirdness. What things really sound like backwards has little to do with how they're spelled. If you record "I smell sausage" and play it in reverse, you'll hear youself saying quite clearly "Jesus loves you". -- "It is clear our nation is reliant upon big foreign oil. To: digest@garynumanfan.nu Hello all, Well to be honest I haven't got to read much of the digest in the last few weeks. All the bitching about people who are critics of the new album, or the moaning about how Gary doesn't hold to a select group of peoples superstitious belief has grown tiresome. Here’s my brief comment for the critics of the new album. I really like the music on the new album, but then I also enjoy MM and NIN. Where I think everyone’s criticism misses the mark, and what I really think everyone is afraid to say is Gary’s lyrics suck. He hasn’t been able to write a decent lyric since I Assassin. He seems to be saying the same things over and over again. No this album is not the next Telekon, Replicas or Dance. This album just is what it is, and Gary will never again reach his creative peak that he had between Tubeway Army to I Assassin. On a more positive note I found this article on the Ultravox website. It appears that Numan will be on yet another movie sound track. I hope this is new news for everyone. Midge Ure has recently composed an original film score for a Richard Schenkman film entitled Went to Coney Island on a Mission from God... Be Back By Five, starring Ione Skye, Jon Cryer, Rafael Baez and Rick Stear. The film is opening in New York and Los Angeles on 9th June 2000. The film also features songs by Gary Numan, Adam Ant, Girlfriend, Ambrosia, Modern English, The Trammps, The Rascals, Nick Gilder, Bread and Gary Wright. The soundtrack album has now been released, and contains sections of Midge's score. You can order this CD from CD-Now by clicking HERE, or from Amazon.com by clicking HERE. The film will be released on DVD on December 26th 2000, and can be pre-ordered from Amazon.com HERE. There is no news of a video release as yet. To: "Gary Numan" Hey all, After seeing STUSSY666@aol.com's email I thought I'd say something, and plus I forgot to introduce myself to the digest. I first heard Gary Numan's cars during a bus ride to school in the morning where I was half asleep. It was such a good song, that I stood up from the seat and planted my ear against the speaker so I COULDN'T miss who sung it.. regardless of the embarassement. I have never ever done that in my life!! It was a great tune. Meanwhile, I had my own personal problems that I was dwelling on for about 7 months and after that day, my life changed. Heh, it had to do with a girl.. she was a cute one i tell ya.. but that's besides the point. Well I eventually focused all my attention to Numan's music and his style (berserker outfit, that kinda stuff) and I was amazed.. now that's fucking style. And originality too. Well before you know it I spent less time thinking about that girl who was my best friend and a crush, to listening to Numan. I know, may sound obsessive.. but what can I say. this is Gary Numan we're talking about. Anyways, It's been 1 whole year since the big day on the bus and I've managed to collect all his albums new on CD. I mean it, even the Extended Versions on CD of Berserker, the fury, sacrifice, machine and soul and exile.. I got em all.. Techno Army, Radio Heart, Eagle Reiussees for bonus tracks.. everything!! Except for Numan Sharpe actually.. and I love that one. It was quite a struggle to get all those albums but I did it. I had a job doing framing over the summer and it paid for a lot of that stuff. When I say this, please don't beat me up.. I still don't have Pure either.. :( I still haven't gotten around to getting it. Without a doubt, I love ALL of numan's stuff.. there is not one album I do not like. I mean it, and I especially love Machine & Soul.. I still can't understand why so many people don't like that stuff... but of course, people are entitled to their own opinions and I will abide by that. I hope to see Gary Numan live.. and if I do the first thing he'll get form me his a big hug for having such a positive influence on my life. I hope the US/Canada tour becomes a reality. If you made it this far, thanks for reading! Exile trots along all the way through at the same rhythm, yes, but each song sounds, to my ear, far more texturally varied--and, in fact, melodically varied--than the material on Pure. I do like Pure, but it's not grabbing me the way either Sacrifice or Exile did, and I don't know why. I may just not be in quite the right mood for it, but in comparison to either of those it sounds a little bit weak or stale--it doesn't sound to me like the same amount of work went into it. Again, however, I'm not putting it down--it's a good album and a fresh direction for Numan, whether or not it's an entirely fresh sound, and I'm still awed and relieved at his departure from his funky days--dark times indeed. :-). I also like the layers upon layers and complexity of Exile, and I'm not crazy about wall-of-noise stuff. It's better live, but there's less to hang my hat on. It also sounds a lot better at REALLY HIGH VOLUME. The didgeridoo-like sound on "Pure," for example, just vanishes into the mishmash at normal volume. As for his most innovative albums, I'm also surprised at the number of people who mention Telekon. I was disappointed in it when it came out, and it's still one of my least favorites (with the major exception of "Aircrash Bureau"), though this has a lot to do with my aversion to hearing rock stars whining about their hard lot in life on a record (I don't mind them whining, I mind them recording their whining and selling it to me). As for what hit the hardest generally speaking, I'd say Pleasure Principle. It was startlingly fresh, and, though completely synth-based, it wasn't a bit like the synth-based disco-pablum of the era. Not thinking of my favorites so much as what seemed most startling at the time, I'd say the two most innovative were, in this order, Pleasure Principle Replicas Shutting up now, zg Pestmaster (zigi@ravenland.com) Ziggy's House O' Vermin http://www.ravenland.com/index.html/index.htm ------------------------- "You gotta kinda drift through the albinos like they was bunches of sunflowers." --Rather Random Person Overheard at Kiva ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Nov 2000 07:48:30 -0500 From: "Troy L. Walters" Subject: Pure Lyrics To: The Gary Numan Digest You'll want to skip this one... I understand how many fans could interpret Gary's lyrics on PURE as cold and even angry, but I haven't really taken it that way at all. Yes, Gary obviously has issues with (insert preferred reference to supreme being/deity/whatever) but obviously BELIEVES there is something, or he would not have such strong feelings and dedicate so much energy. I'm not going to debate this with anyone - it's a subjective matter for each and every one of us. For someone to argue with me about MY beliefs is like taking a knife to a gun fight... The lyrics on PURE can actually be interpreted in a number of ways, and I have actually connected with a few of the songs on different levels. Take My Jesus, for an example: the obvious is to take it as a song ABOUT Jesus (which Gary has said it is NOT a song about Jesus at all - it's about a man who hears voices in his head). That song has hit me from three different perspectives - all very powerful. A Prayer For The Unborn is overwhelmingly powerful! I have BEEN THERE - EXACTLY! I have been at that point in my life, had very nearly the same "conversation" with God. And the line in I Can't Breathe - "I'm scared of mirrors in case it's me" has a truth I could never explain. I have done a horrible job of attempting to explain that the lyrics CAN touch someone... I've always had this problem with Gary's music - I can not put into words what it does to me... what it does FOR me. I thought I didn't care to try, but apparently I do, or I would not have attempted to here. I guess that's why I usually fall back on a favored Harley-Davidson T-shirt... "If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand." Gary has always been something you either "get" or you don't. For some, it may take a long time for it to sink in; others are affected immediately; and still others are immune. I... well... I'm infected! Thanks for your time. Hope I didn't get any on you.
