Never hit reply to post to the Digest. Always, ALWAYS, start a new email and copy and paste the digest address to the new email. Many email programs actually will suggest the address when you start typing it if you have posted before. 2. Please try to descriptive of the subject matter about which you are posting. "Gary Numan Digest Vol 2 #95" or variants thereof do not qualify as descriptive subject lines. 3. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER post pictures, programs or any sort of attachment to the Digest. This is an ASCI forum and anything but basic text creates an unholy mess. 4. Avoid posting in HTML format. It comes out looking very strange in ASCI and is a pain to read. If Joey, Dave and I were gods we'd know when offending posts occur or would have time to edit the Digest. But as we aren't and all have busy lives, the Digest requires the vigilance of each poster to make it run smoothly. Changes may be occurring in the not too distant future which may ameliorate some of these problems. If I had the ability I'd reject posts which quote back the previous digest, messages with "Re: Gary Numan Digest Vol 2 #XX" as the subject line, and any hint of HTML formatting. But that is not possible right now. However, you may as well start practicing good habits so should this become possible you won't get a post rejected. As 2000 passes, we can all look forward to 2001 knowing that he will be gracing the world's stages again. The UK/Ireland tour is scheduled, the 2001 North American Tour is being booked, an enhanced CD release of "Pure" will occur in February, remastered reissues of "I Assassin" and "Warriors" have been promised, a live album/video/DVD is possible, and I hope upon hope, that somehow the extended version of "Pure" makes its appearance one way or another (I had hoped it would be paired with the enhanced CD). So we have lots to look forward to. Happy Nu Year everyone! It is their sheer bone idleness in not wanting to type in an email address and sadly their inability to think of anything to write in the subject line. I find that so many email correspondents do this. I do not know what we can do about the spammers. Has anyone noticed that, (with Spam in general) when one replies to their "remove" address with requests to be removed etc. (or a few expletives) the mail just bounces back as undeliverable. A Happy New Year to all those members who use the digest properly. To: Gary Numan A couple of weeks ago I announced triumphantly that I had convinced someone to buy PURE. At long last, I can report a doubling of that figure. I still remain convinced that PURE will sell, but non-Numanoids have to tell one another about this record... I played several tracks from the album to a young semi-musician, who kept going, "Wow!" and explaining what unusual thing it was that Gary had done here and there - things that are probably self-evident to the musicians amongst you. I had just thought it was brilliant! He was explaining to me **why** it was brilliant! Anyway, he has bought the CD. Two down, 60,000,000 to go... Paddy Vickers ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Dec 2000 12:51:35 -0800 From: Gregor Torrence Subject: Berseker(s) Movie? To: digest@garynumanfan.nu (Gary Numan) First a little catch up. According to what Gary says in Praying To The Aliens, the name for Beserker came from a series of Fred Saberhagen novels he read when he was a kid. If you want to bone up on your influences, you're going to have to those as well a the usual Philip Dick, J. G. Ballard, etc. Or if you're lazy, it seems you may be able to just wait until the movie gets made. According to the movie rumor site Coming Attractions, the Saberhagen books have been optioned for developing into a movie. And in another numan related twist, it's rumored to be attached to Alex Proyas, the director of Dark City. I have plenty to offer in exchange. If anyone would like to exchange lists of Numan bootlegs for trade, please drop me an e-mail at machman@interaccess.com. To: digest@garynumanfan.nu Hi. I haven't seen anyone else mention this. Gary is set to perform at the South by Southwest Conference in Austin Texas March 14-18th. details at http://www.sxsw.com MUSIC FESTIVAL "SXSW had more of an international feel than ever, with nearly 100 of the music festival's...acts coming from abroad." -Seattle Times Advertising, promotion, marketing and selling--finding the right exposure for artists is expensive, and it can be difficult to know when the money is well spent. Who do you need to reach? Critics? TV and Radio programmers? Talent buyers? Distributors? Retail? Wouldn't it help if they were all in one place, all at the same time? They're at SXSW, joining thousands of other business people and artists each March to share in the art and business of music. The SXSW Music Festival and Conference has been bringing music business professionals together for 14 years now, and its reputation for presenting superb music in an engaging and enjoyable business setting has been well earned and is respected internationally. As a cost effective way of exposing music to an influential audience it's hard to beat. Has anyone noticed that something very like this happened at the beginning of Gary's career? He always cited John Foxx as an important early influence, yet Foxx's album "Metamatic" was I thought very influenced by "The Pleasure Principle". So I said, 'Oh, yes, Billy Corgan's a well-known Gary Numan fan.' 'Oh, right, I didn't know that', he said, 'Because I heard two of the tracks on this and they reminded me of Gary Numan's music, not just the sort of music but the recording style...' And he played me one track. It was very Numanish, but I haven't nailed down the title yet. I think the CD is called Morva or something like that.... Paddy Vickers ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Dec 2000 22:51:16 -0800 From: Derek Langsford Subject: Vocal effect on Pure To: digest@garynumanfan.nu Listening to "Pure" on headphones I realized virtually every song has Gary's vocal line repeated with a delay of a fraction of a second. I found myself getting annoyed by it. I assume this is a desired effect and not just an accident. Or maybe Gary forgot to switch the effect off after the first song :-) Anyone know more about this?
