To: "Gary Numan Digest" What is the world coming to? So many things amaze me about Mark Thomas's problem with the Fury. My eyes are still spinning in my skull a full day after reading it for the first time. Has the digest finally entered the Outer Limits? I mean, is it common practice when invited to dinner to borrow a CD while using the bathroom? I really don't fancy the thought of my CD collection being handled in those circumstances. Particularly dodgy with the Fury as well, what with the white suit and all that. I know many people who disappear to the loo with a good book, or even a paper in the confines of their own home. Perhaps even a crossword. However, the thought of requesting CDs while dining with friends. Do what? I suppose one must admire the nerve of Mark's Furious friend. But surely Mark, surely you should have nipped this in the bud long before it became a habit. What next? Does your wife not find it odd? Is it common practice in your part of the world? Am I neglecting my guests when I don't offer musical entertainment while they attend to their bathroom needs? Now as to what Marks friend does to the musical accompaniment of the Fury, well, there is no real evidence. Could the requirement for music merely be to cover up the sound of severe flatulence? Maybe he is rather shy, and as there is no lock on the door, he is keen to warn of any potential intruders? Mind you, surely whistling would suffice. OK, I know 15 minutes is a long time. Constipation maybe. I really am at a loss. Mark, you say finally that it is a strange world out there. Surely no stranger than in your own house?!! To: "Numan Digest" Hi All, Sat 20th, 09.00 hrs-ish, SKY ONE in the UK. There I was: eating my cornflakes watching the computer animation cartoon of Starship Troopers. Now I don't normally do this, although, as cartoons go it's pretty good (but not as good as X-Men or Spidey, of course...... ;) ..what do I hear, but, the infamous Sacrifice/Exile drum loops accompanying a bit of 'shoot the green guys' action. A quick refresher that morning tracks it down to Exile track 2 (Prophecy). Now unless this is a standard pre-set on particular keyboard, then someone's borrowed the beats, so to speak. Whilst this is not very significant in the grand scheme, I wonder if there's a Numan fan in the company that makes the 'toon. If there is and you read the digest.........why don't you tell us the story. Takes it easy folks NickiNu.....proud member of the 'I can turn the bloody HTML off' club ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2001 23:38:18 -0700 From: "Joey Lindstrom" Subject: Gary Numan Digest (action needed) To: "digest@garynumanfan.nu" My name is Joey Lindstrom and I operate the machine that, currently, produces the Gary Numan Digest, to which you are subscribed (or at least I presume so - if you got this email, your email address is in our database as a subscriber). As you may be aware, over the last while, several issues have cropped up that have served to pretty much annoy the heck out of everybody. These things, among others, include: 1) Spam on the mailing list 2) HTML code included in posts 3) VERY large posts, typically caused by somebody quoting back the entire previous Digest when replying As a result, I'm going to give some new software a try. This software is actually a part of the mail server software (MDaemon) that I use to manage all the email for the garynumanfan.nu domain, with the exception of the Digest which currently sits on its own server. It will eliminate problems #1 and #3 (or at least reduce them, by allowing posts only from registered subscribers and limiting posts to 30K in size), and I may be able to manage something in regards to #2. However, by making this switch, we will lose the ability to generate Digests twice a week - instead, they will be issued one per day. I've NOT given this software a thorough workout with a large mailing list and therefore I have no idea if it's up to the job. And that's where you come in. I would like as many of you as possible to sign up for a test run of the new Digest. It will run PARALLEL with the existing Digest while we conduct the test and iron out any bugs still in the system. I really need as many of you as possible to help with this test - the point is to make sure it runs well under a LARGE load. So, if you could please do the following, I would be greatly appreciative. :-) Step #1 ------- Send an email to "listserv@garynumanfan.nu" (without the quotes). On the first line of the body of the message, put this (by itself): subscribe numantest ("numantest" is the temporary name of this mailing list) Step #2 ------- Wait for a confirmation email to be sent back to you. This is a key step: the new Digest software won't allow you to sign up unless it VERIFIES that you are indeed at the email address you purport to be at. This makes it a little more of a pain in the ass for spammers and most won't bother, and it prevents anyone from signing you up without your consent (or unsubscribing you without your consent, for that matter) Step #3 ------- Follow the instructions within that confirmation email, which if I recall correctly simply state that you have to REPLY to it (with no additional action required other than sending the reply) Step #4 ------- Wait for a second confirmation, which should welcome you to the new Digest. If all went well (the key steps are the two confirmation emails - if you don't get both, then it didn't work), you should now be subscribed. You may now try posting something to the Digest, see step #5. Step #5 ------- Write a test message to the Digest, at this email address: numantest@garynumanfan.nu Step #6 ------- Wait for the Digest containing your post to be delivered. I've currently got it set to create the daily Digest at 6pm Mountain Standard Time each day (for those of you in the UK, that's 1am I think). Please email me your results - I want to know if you were able to get through all six steps with no problem, or if the process broke down at any point. If all goes well, we'll be switching to this software sometime in the next couple of weeks. My thanks in advance! In defence of myself, no, I don't have the IQ of a stone. I read this information about changing her name about six years ago, so forgive the rustiness. I was confusing the issue, probably with the Claire Grogan from the States, rather than somehow twisting reality and thinking of a long lost twin. I have never before heard of Altered Images. Apart from that, I digress. I was wrong, I thought it was another Claire Grogan who sang in a group, that was my understanding six years ago. Ah, well, better dead than smeg, eh?
