Gary Numan Digest Thu, 8 Feb 2001 Volume 2 : Issue 115 Today's Topics: Administrivia - We're going live this Thursday (2 msgs) Aircrash Bureau Updated convention? Fwd: Returned mail: User unknown Gary Numan Digest V2 #114 Hideous Input Numantest probs Please sign me up for the new digest, Pure - Tour Edition subscribe The Mail On Sunday Newspaper Tickets Unofficial recordings Vh1 and cars ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Feb 2001 00:17:36 -0700 From: "Joey Lindstrom" Subject: Administrivia - We're going live this Thursday To: "digest@garynumanfan.nu" OK folks, this is it. Sometime Thursday (probably in the morning, more likely in the afternoon), I'm going to place an intercept on email sent to "digest@garynumanfan.nu" and redirect those postings to the "new Digest", which has been at the address "numantest@garynumanfan.nu" but has now taken the name "numan@garynumanfan.nu" (and thus your Digests will appear in your inbox with a title something like "[numan] Digest [date-time-etc.]" This means that, indefinitely, you can continue to send your postings to "digest@garynumanfan.nu" and they should arrive in the right place. However, all of the help files and whatnot will soon indicate that "numan@garynumanfan.nu" will be the place to send them. Don't worry about it, just use the same ol' address you normally use. :-) Many of you have already subscribed to the test-version of the new Digest, and indeed many of you have been cross-posting your posts to both Digests. Thanks for this - but from this point on, don't bother cross-posting anymore. Those of you who have not subscribed, NOW IS THE TIME TO DO IT. The old server will produce another Digest on Sunday to accomodate any posts that slip through between the time the Thursday Digest is produced and the time I place the intercept. After that, I am SHUTTING THAT MACHINE DOWN, and that means that unless you are subscribed to the new Digest, you will stop receiving any Numan Digest traffic. (I will pack up this machine and leave it intact for the next month or two just in case anything goes wrong and we suddenly need to go back to it. Also, if/when I finally do dissect it, I'll make a complete system image backup beforehand, so I can STILL return to that machine later on down the road if I absolutely must.) To subscribe to the new Digest (you must do this in order to remain a subscriber - user records are NOT being transferred!), send a message to: listserv@garynumanfan.nu On the first line of the body of the message, you need to include the following text: subscribe numan@garynumanfan.nu (my-email@address.com) The "(my-email@address.com)" part is optional and should not be enclosed in quotes - this is useful for those folks who have multiple reply addresses, which can confuse the list-server... normally, your correct email address should be picked up automatically. The list-server will send a response (usually within just a couple of minutes), either to the address it thinks you are at, or to the one you've explicitly stated. You must reply to that message (within 48 hours) in order to become subscribed - this prevents people from signing up other people who don't actually want it, and also prevents others from unsubscribing you, either by accident or intentionally. Once you reply to that message, a few minutes later you should receive a message telling you that you are signed up. If you have any problems, please forward copies of the messages you sent, and any responses you got, to me at either joey@garynumanfan.nu or postmaster@garynumanfan.nu Once you have signed up, you can continue to receive a once-a-day Digest, or you can opt to receive postings as soon as they arrive (making it more like a "traditional" mailing list). By default, you are set in "Digest" mode but you can opt out. To do so (once you've subscribed - don't bother trying this until you have), send another message to: listserv@garynumanfan.nu And on the first line of the body of the message, include this: normal numan@garynumanfan.nu To switch back to Digest mode, repeat the steps above but use this text instead: digest numan@garynumanfan.nu If you lose these instructions, well, try to remember that "listserv@garynumanfan.nu" is the magic name. :-) Send a message to it at any time with the word HELP all by itself in the body of the message. :-) A note on error messages: some of you have noted that you've received both a welcome message (ie: you've subscribed successfully) as well as an error message saying that the list server could not understand your command. This usually affects only Hotmail and Yahoo users and anyone else that places a signature automatically within messages you send (Hotmail and Yahoo place their little spam-a-gram at the bottom of all the messages you send). These are what trigger the error messages: the list server is trying to interpret the signatures as commands, and of course they're failing. If I recall correctly, the first line of the Yahoo spam-a-gram is the word "get", which is a valid list-server command, and that definitely triggers an error message. Bottom line: these error messages are HARMLESS - if you've received your welcome message, you are subscribed and you can safely ignore the error message. Final note: I still have not managed to fully resolve the "big three" problems, and those are, in case you missed it: 1) People who quote-back the entire previous Digest in their posts. 2) People who use HTML code in their posts (note: this is a violation of internet standards... but then, when's Microsoft ever been known to actually honour a standard they didn't themselves create?) 3) People who attach files to their Digest posts. All three are fixable and they remain a high priority for me. However, it involves a software upgrade, and that's not something I want to perform on the "production server" just yet. I have two other email servers running the same software here. My plan is to install a fourth copy on my workstation, test it out, then perform the upgrade and put it through some tests. If it passes, then I'll upgrade the OTHER TWO servers and see how that goes. If all goes perfectly well, THEN AND ONLY THEN will I upgrade the machine that that Digest runs on. I want to be ULTRA-conservative when it comes to messing about with that machine, folks, so do please bear with me. I know these three problems are something that you've been begging to see fixed, and believe me, I'm on your side: they annoy the hell out of me too. :-) I would prefer, however, to err on the side of caution: I don't want to upgrade a piece of software that is working and potentially break it until I know that the upgrade will NOT break things. In other words, I think that given the choice, we'd all prefer to continue receiving Digests with these problems than to suddenly stop receiving Digests at all. :-) OK folks, off we go. Wish me luck, and thanks again for your patience. / From the desk of Joey Lindstrom / / Rush Limbaugh's Updated 35 UNDENIABLE TRUTHS / / NUMBER 33 / / You could afford your house without your government - if it weren't for / your government. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Feb 2001 15:33:49 +0000 (GMT) From: VinceH Subject: Administrivia - We're going live this Thursday To: "digest@garynumanfan.nu" In article , Joey Lindstrom wrote: > Many of you have already subscribed to the test-version of the > new Digest, and indeed many of you have been cross-posting > your posts to both Digests. All I,m sorry, but I just can't see ANY benifit for Gary doing yet another version of cars, these progams always ask gary to play cars then the media crucify him for living on past glories, even a "purified" version of cars is still cars,I too would be happy for cars to be dropped by Gary on live tours, giving it an airing every now and again, that would give it a chance to be less BORING!! as it is now.I skip cars when playing cd's and can't remember the last time I actually picked it out to play itself. Gary has soooo much more to his reportiore than this and if he dosent make a stand like this it could very well be a milestone around his neck.
