The Birmingham Academy has only recently opened, or reopened, and was quite a pleasant place. The ground floor was pretty well full, but very few people were up on the balcony, which was also standing space. I was supposed to be meeting a fellow Digester, but never found him, so I took up a place quite a way back from the stage. The background music was Nine Inch Nails, or if wasn=92t, it sounded like it to me! I assumed it was =91Things Falling Apart=92, which I have not yet heard, and this suspicion=20 was fuelled by the sound of =91Metal=92, which livened it all up a bit. At 8.00 p.m. the support group came on. Apparently they were called Little Hell, but no-one said so! They were a five-piece band. The girl singer worked very hard, with punkish singing, often in harmony with the rhythm guitarist, who looked like he was probably a travel agent for his day job. The lead guitarist I couldn=92t see very well from where I was, but the bassist was worth watching. She wore a low-cut black leather top, and was tattooed all down her right arm. The drummer I remember nothing about! They played about seven songs, more catchy than many support bands we see. They were well within the punk/rock/goth rock mode, and went down reasonably well. Somebody else will probably email in now, and say they were terrible, but never mind. At about 9.00 the real show began. There was a long PUREish intro, and the band gradually arrived. Gary was wearing a black t-shirt with grey geometric patterns on the back and front. His trousers had some kind of =91pouch=92 or something on the back, but this was not clear from where I was. He had a black leather jacket, which he took off after a while.=20 Rob Beasley I could hardly see, as he was not on any kind of raised platform. David Brookes has had another head transplant. He has a bit of a goatee, with a shock of hair standing up, well, actually, falling about. Ade Orange has now got short, bleached hair and dark glasses, and stood pretty well still all the session. Steve Harris had those=20 braces on his trousers again, holding his legs together, and a black mesh top. He had a black line, like a seam, running down the front of his face, and a sort of wide Mohican-style one-off haircut. His haircuts are always one-off! Here we go: 1) PURE Very atmospheric. With the audience joining in the choruses. 2) FILMS. Good audience participation. 3) RIP. Good sinalong. 4) LISTEN TO MY VOICE. At Brixton, I felt that=20 this one did not work for some reason, but this time it was, as it is on disc, excellent. This track is probably the best chance for a single on the album. 5) METAL. New version. That intro is soooo haunting, it has been running through my head since the show! And it is an excellent song. Any NIN non-numanoids in the audience will already recognise the song and=20 make the connection.=20 6) DOWN IN THE PARK. Again, Manson fans will have recognised this one. I think this is a wonderful song, and always have. What more can I say? 7) WALKING WITH SHADOWS. Excellent. 8) MY JESUS. Sung wonderfully off-key, deliberately. These songs are just so good! 9) TORN. 10) EVERYDAY I DIE. 11) ME! I DISCONNECT FROM YOU. Very rousing. Unfortunately, I disconnected from the concert for a few minutes because, unusually for Numan concert, there was a fight going on. Someone, possibly with a drink, was pushing smaller people, and got pushed back. Or something like that. It took about three people to hold him off attacking somebody. It only affected our part of the crowd, but it spoiled DISCONNECT for me! 12) I CAN=92T BREATHE. People were cheering in the quiet bits again. 13) ARE FRIENDS ELECTRIC? Really good, as always. Thank you! Goodbye! Band return. Gary praises Rob Holliday and Monti for their help on PURE. Rob comes on to join the band for: 14) CARS. Oh, no, not CARS. I=92m sick of hearing this, I thought he would leave it out. After about ten seconds you think, Hey, this is fun! Everyone is bouncing up and down and - well, heck, this is a good song, isn=92t it? 15) VOIX. Shiver of excitement at the first notes. Another good song! 16) REMIND ME TO SMILE. Great stuff. 17) PRAYER FOR THE UNBORN. A great song to finish on. It builds. Although - tracks with a strong guitar line in were missing out a bit=20 throughout the evening. as the amp was not loud enough for those odd bits where the guitar should have been up front. An excellent concert. T-shirts on sale, and a CD of answered questions, which I have not been=20 able to listen to yet. I might go to another Numan concert one day. They are good. Hmm.. maybe you have seen me before? My pic can be found at: http://www.geocities.com/zit1.geo/mike.jpg Anyways, my news Well, I've been waiting two weeks for the Wembley TV.com Gary Numan webcast to come around, and I can't believe it didn't work. I couldn't friggin believe it. I kept getting a stupid error such as "file not found". I knew something like this would happen!!!!! Damn Murphy's law. What makes it even worse is that a day has passed, the webcast footage has been archived to the site's "previous webcasts". But, unlike the rest of the other archived webcasts, I can't watch Numan's because of the same damn error. I can't believe this.. I may never have a chance to see Numan live for a long time.. I would do anything to see him live. Well, i'm in the mood to share some of my personal feelings. I also wish I was 20 years older so I could see the Berserker / Fury tours.. I may be straight, but I think Gary looks very sexy in the his outfits.. especially the Berserker / The Fury outfit. I think all of Gary's music kicks ass.. and I mean ALL OF IT. Out of all the awesome songs on Pure, my favourite is Walking with shadows. I also think the Aircrash Bureau is a beautiful song! I hope he will come to Vancouver, BC for the Pour tour. If he doesn't.. oh well.. : ( If you made it this far.. thanks for reading my stuff!! Please respond if you have time!
